Christian And Feminist? Competing Views Of Feminism In Christian America, Bryanna J. Benedetti Apr 2011

Christian And Feminist? Competing Views Of Feminism In Christian America, Bryanna J. Benedetti

Whittier Scholars Program

This project discusses how American young women in different Christian denominations inherit and adopt certain value systems, with regard to feminism and reactions, or backlash, to feminism. This study examines both the correlation and tension between feminist values and conservative (or anti-) feminist values, both of which find ties to Christian values, and discusses how two seemingly opposing views can be grounded in one faith. This project focuses on Mormon and Roman Catholic involvement in feminism movements as well as creates and uses a literature review of feminist theologies in both churches. This study includes examination of the history of …

Intelligent Design And Its Place In The Classroom, Victor Trinh, Mekdelawit Mezgebu Apr 2011

Intelligent Design And Its Place In The Classroom, Victor Trinh, Mekdelawit Mezgebu

Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)

Creationism, is the dominant belief held by the public. Evolution, on the other hand, is the competing theory of the mechanisms of creation. The recent dispute among the scientific and political field that has furthermore complicated the question of intelligent design being integrated into the curriculum of public schools is addressed here. We attempt to give both sides of the argument, along with analyzing the components of each theory. Intelligent design advocates are for the idea of accommodating what they have coined “intelligent design” into the classrooms of American schools. The opponents of intelligent design (evolution supporters); however, claim that …

Should Intelligent Design Be Taught Alongside Evolution In Public Schools?, Chelsea Opdendyk, Christina James

Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)

Evolution being the creation of life through a scientific method and ID being the creation of life through a religious point of view. The overall proposing question to be discussed throughout this project is whether or not ID should be taught in schools alongside Evolution within science classes. The first phase of this project involves research of the positive teachings of ID within the school system and how it can be beneficial to students. The second part of this project involves the negative aspects of educating students the proposed theory of ID. The final phase revolves around the favored conclusion …

Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Michael Phan, Jeniene Hassan Apr 2011

Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Michael Phan, Jeniene Hassan

Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)

Embryonic stem cell research has the potential to regenerate malfunctioning tissues and replace harmful cancer cells. Although it holds the potential to alleviate malicious disabilities and diseases, it raises ethical concerns due to the destruction of a fertilized human embryo. In certain religions (Catholics and Christians), embryonic stem cell research is detested due to the destruction of a human at its early stages of life (embryo). On the other hand, scientists believe that embryonic stem cells can “someday…used to treat human diseases.” (Hansen 879) This analysis on embryonic stem cell research will consider both the supporting and opposing side of …

Redemptive Leadership, C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary hosted its "Salting the Workplace - How?" seminar in 2011. For his speech at the workshop, Pollard chose the topic of redemptive leadership, which he understands as being fundamentally concerned with the development of the human person. This type of leadership can never be divorced from the ultimate questions, i.e. those pertaining to God and faith.

Book Review: Walking Gently On The Earth, Melanie Springer Mock Apr 2011

Book Review: Walking Gently On The Earth, Melanie Springer Mock

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "For that reason, I approached Walking Gently on the Earth with a healthy sense of skepticism, ready to be preached at again regarding the choices I’ve made about my family and lifestyle. Yet a few pages into Lisa Graham McMinn’s new book, I knew this exploration of sustainability would be different: more gentle, as the title itself suggests. McMinn, along with her daughter and co-writer Megan Anna Neff, examines the ways we can more readily nurture “God’s good gift”—that is, the earth and everything in it— through what McMinn calls “an ethic of care.” Although McMinn and Neff challenge …

Business As A Calling Of God (Boston), C. William Pollard Apr 2011

Business As A Calling Of God (Boston), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Pollard addressed the 2011 Boston Business Breakfast alongside Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary's David Gill. In his address, he spoke of how the 2008-2009 financial collapse had caused many to ask whether businesses could make money while also being moral communities. For Pollard, this is possible only if leaders focus first on people rather than profit, a reorientation of priority which will require a transformation in how businesses are run and how future corporate managers are educated.

An Exposition Of Augustine's Theodicy: From Its Influences To Its Modern Application, Kevin J. Gray Apr 2011

An Exposition Of Augustine's Theodicy: From Its Influences To Its Modern Application, Kevin J. Gray

Philosophy Student Scholarship

This paper delineates the thrust of Augustine's theodicy against the broader background of his Christian Neoplatonic outlook. We examine Augustine's initial Manichean influences and see how these beliefs carry over to his mature thought, which is evident in the seventh book of the Confessions. After Augustine's time with the Manicheans, we look at how he was so influenced by the books of the Platonists (libri platonicorum). Although Augustine's position regarding the problem of evil shifts, his idea of the primacy of the soul is still evident in his thought process. To wit, Augustine posits that evil must …

For Their Own Good: Moral Slavery 101--The Aristotelian Cantus Firmus, Gary M. Simpson

Faculty Publications

“Moral slavery” will sound curiously—even immorally—oxymoronic to most of us, and a “course” in Aristotle’s views on “moral slavery” will seem quaintly archaic or irrelevantly “academic.” We will be surprised to learn how much these ideas have influenced our culture and continue to influence our lives and politics.
