Viewpoint: Teaching Hinduism In Catholic High Schools, Pravrajika Saradeshaprana, Tracy Sayuki Tiemeier Nov 2011

Viewpoint: Teaching Hinduism In Catholic High Schools, Pravrajika Saradeshaprana, Tracy Sayuki Tiemeier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The Los Angeles Hindu-Catholic Dialogue recently organized a workshop at Loyola Marymount University on Teaching Hinduism in Catholic High Schools (May 2010). Initiated by a Hindu member of the Dialogue who was disturbed by the World Religions textbook used in a local Catholic high school, the workshop's goal was to help teachers of World Religions at Catholic high schools teach Hindu traditions more accurately and respectfully. The daylong event featured sessions on Hindu Perspectives on Education, Resources and Strategies in Teaching Hinduism, and small group dialogues between Hindu speakers and attendees and Catholic teachers.

Convergences And Divergences: The Lives Of Swami Abhishiktananda And Raimundo Panikkar, Edward T. Ulrich Nov 2011

Convergences And Divergences: The Lives Of Swami Abhishiktananda And Raimundo Panikkar, Edward T. Ulrich

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Today the field of Hindu-Christian studies is burgeoning with both advanced scholars and freshly minted PhDs. However, during most of the twentieth century it was rare for a Christian thinker to take non-Christian religions seriously as a meaningful area of theological inquiry. Those who did generally limited themselves to theorizing about these religions in the abstract, rather than engaging with living members of these religions. Five outstanding exceptions were Jules Monchanin, Swami Abhishiktananda, Raimundo Panikkar, Francis Acharya, and Bede Griffiths, all of whom were Catholic priests who settled in India over a sixteen year time period, from 1939 to 1955. …

A Literary Hindu-Christian Dialogue A Century Ago: Still Actual?, Klaus K. Klostermaier Nov 2011

A Literary Hindu-Christian Dialogue A Century Ago: Still Actual?, Klaus K. Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Re-reading Alkondavilli Govindacarya The Divine Wisdom of the Dravida Saints Madras: C.N. Press, 1902, XXIII + 216 pages.

A preliminary note: This is not a 'book review' as this is usually understood; it would make little sense to write on after over a century of the first publication of the work. It is an invitation to re-discover a reputable Hindu scholar who was eager to find in Christianity parallels to his own faith-tradition. His very choice of topics is intriguing. The range of Christian literature referred to and quoted from is amazing; I believe it is without parallel. The fact …

Author Response, Michelle Voss Roberts Nov 2011

Author Response, Michelle Voss Roberts

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I am humbled and honored by the engagement of these four scholars, all of whom have significantly influenced my thinking. Francis Clooney's pioneering work first interested me in the practice of comparative reading. Lance Nelson's reflections on the ecological implications of a non-dualism provided a springboard for much of chapter three. Laurel Schneider's radical push toward multiplicity has challenged my constructive thinking. Conversations with Brad Bannon, a new dialogue partner, have generated new springs of insight. I am grateful to each of them for the gift of their response to Dualities. I also owe a debt of gratitude to …

A Response To Michelle Voss Roberts' Dualities, Francis X. Clooney Nov 2011

A Response To Michelle Voss Roberts' Dualities, Francis X. Clooney

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Dualities is a serious contribution to Hindu-Christian studies, bringing fresh and challenging materials before us. It wonderfully brings together reflection on feminist concerns, attention to the metaphors by which we identify and organize natural and social realities, and critical attention to how linguistic and ontological categories, such as dualities and dualism, fluidity and fluidities, have effects of ethical and spiritual import.

Playing In The Flood Of Love: A Response To Michelle Voss Roberts' "Dualities: A Theology Of Difference", Brad Bannon Nov 2011

Playing In The Flood Of Love: A Response To Michelle Voss Roberts' "Dualities: A Theology Of Difference", Brad Bannon

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

As John Thatamanil confesses in his Foreward to Michelle Voss Roberts' Dualities, I too, as a nondualist theologian, was initially apprehensive about Voss Roberts' title. However, I quickly came to find that the plural emphasis of dualities and the private emphasis of non-dualism actually speak to similar concerns over the inadequacies of both monism and dualism. The dualism denied by non-dualism and the multiplicity and relationality affirmed by dualities are more harmonious than dissonant.

Michelle Voss Roberts' "Dualities", Laurel C. Schneider Nov 2011

Michelle Voss Roberts' "Dualities", Laurel C. Schneider

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Dualities is an important book. It represents a contribution to the field of Hindu Christian studies, but it also adds considerably to women's studies in religion and to the emergent field of comparative theology. Michelle Voss Roberts has managed to treat with sensitivity and creativity two enigmatic figures, each from long ago and far away (from us and from each other), and each from two dramatically different religious traditions. What is remarkable about this study is that Voss Roberts manages to introduce us to the basic shape of both of these women's thought while at the same time pursuing a …

Dualities And Women's Wisdom In Hinduism: Voss Roberts On Lallesvari Of Kashmir, Lance Nelson Nov 2011

Dualities And Women's Wisdom In Hinduism: Voss Roberts On Lallesvari Of Kashmir, Lance Nelson

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The stereotype of the dualist West versus the nondualist East has far outlived whatever usefulness it may have had. As one who has been concerned with this issue in my own work, I am happy to see Michelle Voss Roberts addressing it methodically and effectively n her Dualities: A Theology of Difference. She gives us in this book a multi-leveled study that advances this discussion dramatically on a number of interconnected fronts, both theological and ethical, encompassing wide-ranging feminist, ecological, and social justice concerns. I find myself in enthusiastic agreement with much that she writes. In what follows I …

Editor's Introduction, Brad Malkovsky Nov 2011

Editor's Introduction, Brad Malkovsky

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The publication of Michelle Voss Roberts' Dualities: A Theology of Difference (Louisville, KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2010) has been welcomed by many scholars in the field of Hindu-Christian studies as one of the best books in comparative theology to have appeared in recent years. In it the author focuses on what she calls "the metaphysics of difference and differences between metaphysical systems in the world's religions," through which she seeks to open "new routes through the discourse surrounding dualism, duality, and relation" (xix). She reexamines issues about duality and relation by drawing on the work of Lallesvari, a fourteenth …
