The Relationship Of Canon And Messiah: The Convergence Of Jan Assmann And Walter Benjamin On A Theory Of Monotheistic Canon, Colby Dickinson
The Relationship Of Canon And Messiah: The Convergence Of Jan Assmann And Walter Benjamin On A Theory Of Monotheistic Canon, Colby Dickinson
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This paper focuses upon the relationship between the German Egyptologist Jan Assmann and the German-Jewish late modern literary critic Walter Benjamin as regards the movement from canons to messianic forces. It therefore traces the evolution in Assmann’s thought from issues surrounding the processes of canonization to his development of a form of ‘weak thought’ in relation to religious violence before then turning to Benjamin’s portrayal of a ‘weak messianic force’ moving through history which is only conceivable in close proximity to a scriptural legacy and a divine (or ‘pure’) violence, as he saw it. Additionally, this essay draws a line …

”Tag, You’Re It!”: Using Social Media “Tags” To Help Solve The Problem Of Church Classification In Sociology Of Religion, Steven Losco
Pitzer Senior Theses
Edited Abstract for presentation:
Categorizing humans and human activity can be difficult. In my own research on evangelical church styles in Los Angeles, I found that the services defied discreet categories. I turned to the social web for inspiration on how to categorize the services and landed on blog post “tags” as something that could give me a flexible and dynamic way to “define” the church. Briefly, tags are a set of words or phrases that users categorize anything from blog posts, books on GoodReads, website bookmarks, etc, in other words: metadata. What makes tags so potent as definition is …

How Country Music Can Improve Your Marriage, Greg Hansen
How Country Music Can Improve Your Marriage, Greg Hansen
BYU Studies
This light-hearted personal essay describes one man's "quest to become the Perfect Husband, the Ultimate Man, the Guy My Wife Dreams Of." Greg Hansen, a professional musician, has discovered one secret weapon: country music. "Before becoming the Highly Improved Guy I am today, I would come home after a long day in the recording studio, ready to de-stress and download, my full ration of words completely used up for the day. My wife would want to talk, but I just wanted the remote. Now, because I have memorized so many country songs on the way home, I always have the …
"A Mother There": A Survey Of Historical Teachings About Mother In Heaven, David L. Paulsen, Martin Pulido
"A Mother There": A Survey Of Historical Teachings About Mother In Heaven, David L. Paulsen, Martin Pulido
BYU Studies
Since the 1840s, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) have taught that in addition to a Father in Heaven, we have a Mother in Heaven. This cherished doctrine has been an important, although relatively obscure, part of the Latter-day Saint understanding of the premortal origins and divine nature of humankind. The authors, a professor and a student of philosophy at Brigham Young University, present historical statements by Mormon leaders about Mother in Heaven. Contrary to criticism in some quarters, Church leaders have not relegated this deity to a confined role. Statements from the late 1840s …

"The Testimony Of Men": William E. Mclellin And The Book Of Mormon Witnesses, Mitchell K. Schaefer
BYU Studies
William E. McLellin (1806-1883) was an early Mormon apostle who later left the church. In his later years he questioned the authority of founder Joseph Smith, but he always said he believed that the Book of Mormon was truly the word of God. In 1871 he wrote a notebook in which he recorded his contacts with men who had filled special roles as Book of Mormon witnesses in 1829. McLellin described his 1833 interview of Oliver Cowdery and David Whitmer, his circa-1850 visit with Martin Harris, his 1869 visit with John Whitmer, and a report of an 1833 event involving …
Temple Elements In Ancient Religious Communities, Brent J. Schmidt
Temple Elements In Ancient Religious Communities, Brent J. Schmidt
BYU Studies
The idea of Zion or utopia has fascinated the human race since ancient times. This topic has special meaning to Mormons, since latter-day scripture revealed to Joseph Smith is replete with references to building Zion. What, then, can Latter-day Saints learn from attempts by other groups? One thing we learn, writes Brent Schmidt, is that certain characteristics appeared in some successful ancient communities, characteristics that invoke the temple as known in the Bible and in Latter-day Saint use.
Temple teachings were known and widely dispersed throughout antiquity as a means of forming good communities within religious groups. Indeed, temple themes …

The Search For Mormon Literary Quality: Bound On Earth, Rift, Long After Dark, And The Best Of Mormonism 2009, Jack Harrell
BYU Studies
For a hundred years or more, Latter-day Saints have been writing works of literary quality. We have had among us fine poets and novelists, playwrights and essayists, and, more recently, a few serious filmmakers. I'm not the only one who knows this secret. For three decades, students have taken Mormon literature courses at BYU, reading novels, poems, and plays virtually unknown to their parents and peers. I was one of those students in the early 1990s. It is difficult to see the effects this educational movement has had on LDS culture when visiting a Mormon bookstore today. But for me …
God And Sex: What The Bible Really Says, Michael Coogan, Eric A. Eliason
God And Sex: What The Bible Really Says, Michael Coogan, Eric A. Eliason
BYU Studies
Once, while serving as a military chaplain, I attended a training event in Colorado Springs. There we toured the world headquarters of the Evangelical "Focus on the Family" ministry. Our friendly guide explained to us that their organization existed to promote the "biblical model" of the family in the modern world. A cheeky question popped into to my mind: "By 'biblical model' do you mean the polygamy practiced in the Old Testament, or the celibacy encouraged in the New Testament?" But I held my tongue, as I wanted to be a polite guest. But since this event, I have often …

Days Never To Be Forgotten: Oliver Cowdery, Rachel Ozanne, Alexander L. Baugh
BYU Studies
Days Never to Be Forgotten presents the fruits of the 2006 BYU Church History Symposium on the life and work of Oliver Cowdery in honor of the two hundredth anniversary of his birth. Eleven scholars of Mormon history contributed essays about various aspects of Cowdery's life and involvement in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ultimately, the contributors have two goals: to honor Cowdery's memory and to inform believers who may not be aware of Cowdery's importance in the founding of the Church.
This book gives a good sense of Cowdery's extensive presence and activities in the earliest …
Utopian Communities Of The Ancient World, Brent J. Schmidt, John W. Welch
Utopian Communities Of The Ancient World, Brent J. Schmidt, John W. Welch
BYU Studies
It is often said, and not only by classicists, that in order to understand the modern world a person must learn to understand the ancient world. Fascination with antiquity has not diminished in the digital postmodern age, perhaps because people are wondering more and more what life is really all about and what chance there might now be in the age of instant worldwide communication and interdependent global economies to achieve a truly cooperative state of affairs among all peoples of the earth.
Into this picture comes the work of Brent Schmidt on the use of covenantal rituals and practices …
The Highest Good And The Best Activity: Aristotle On The Well-Lived Life, Philip William Bauchan
The Highest Good And The Best Activity: Aristotle On The Well-Lived Life, Philip William Bauchan
Master's Theses
The question of how Aristotle characterizes eudaimonia, or living-well, in the Nicomachean Ethics has long been a contentious issue amongst Aristotelian scholars. The secondary literature has been roughly divided between inclusivist readers, who argue that Aristotle designates both theoria, or contemplation, and the practical virtues, and exclusivist readers, who argue that Aristotle singles out theoria alone. This thesis seeks to forge a middle ground between these two perspectives by focusing on the central claim of Book I that the eudaimonia is virtuous activity. Reading Book X in light of Book I's claim then allows one to show that both the …

Paul’s relationship with the church at Corinth provides a detailed leadership case study. This is nowhere clearer than in 2 Corinthians, where every chapter displays Paul’s leadership attitudes and practices. Proceeding from the assumption that Paul’s leadership is worthy of emulation, this guide summarizes his behavior under eight headings:
• Accountability & Integrity
• Mission-Centeredness
• Investment in Followers
• Accurate Self-Concept
• Weakness & Adversity
• Assertiveness & Gentleness
• Advocacy
• Shared Responsibility

Desert Living For Modern Day Ministers: Embracing The Life And Practice Of Desert Living In Ministry Today, Kaye L. Mckinley
Desert Living For Modern Day Ministers: Embracing The Life And Practice Of Desert Living In Ministry Today, Kaye L. Mckinley
Doctor of Ministry
Ministers spend most of their time assisting others through trouble and hardship, yet they are often unable to cope with their own personal struggles. In doing so, they neglect their own spiritual lives for the sake of others. This dissertation will explore the desert experiences of the past to determine if the desert metaphor holds value for ministers today as a place of healing and spiritual transformation. In biblical times, the desert was a literal place where people sought God and explored their life and faith. The Desert Fathers and Mother followed this example. Desert living is available for us …

47 | The Ramat Bet Shemesh Regional Project: Landscapes Of Settlement From The Paleolithic To The Ottoman Periods, Yehuda Dagan
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
The Ramat Bet Shemesh Project was a high-resolution regional study of an area in the Judean Shephelah designated for urban developments, which aimed at recording the ancient remains as well as the natural environment that were to be completely destroyed. The first volume, the Gazetteer (IAA Reports 46), described all the sites surveyed during the project, as well as the results of 100 small-scale excavations. This second volume presents the methodology and field techniques of the project, the ecological and environmental studies, the use of GIS technology, and discussions of the settlement patterns and agricultural activity of each period, as …

Witnessing To Christ In A Pluralistic World Christian Mission Among Other Faiths, Lalsangkima Pachuau, Knud Jorgensen
Edinburgh Centenary Series
"The relationship of Christian faith and mission to other living faiths is a core issue in contemporary mission. In a world where plurality of faiths is increasingly becoming a norm of life, insights on the theology of religious plurality are needed to strengthen our understanding of our own faith and the faith of others ... As part of the study process, position papers and case studies were invited from a wide range of contributors representing various theological positions, confessional traditions and denominational bodies. The position papers are reflections on the theme by scholars belonging to Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Protestant-Conciliar, …

2010 Naps Presidential Address: "Fleeing The Kingdom": Augustin's Queer Theology Of Marriage, Virginia Burrus
Religion - All Scholarship
Might attending to the texture of bodies in Augustine’s theology of marriage open up new interpretive possibilities? Eve Kosofky Sedgwick and Patricia Cox Miller give theoretical cues, Danuta Shanzer philological ones, for a dialogical reading of On the Good of Marriage and Confessions that seeks to defamiliarize, complicate, and broaden—in several senses, to queer—traditional interpretations of Augustinian marital theology. Shame and vulnerability, fear and desire, pain and pleasure, are all surfaced, as Augustine depicts marital figures that are shot through with ambivalence—open and torn, cut and bleeding, both cleaving to one another and ripped apart. Ultimately, he attempts to …
Leading The Multiethnic Church: Help From New Metaphors And The Leadership Challenge, Elizabeth Childs Drury
Leading The Multiethnic Church: Help From New Metaphors And The Leadership Challenge, Elizabeth Childs Drury
Great Commission Research Journal
Success in leading the multiethnic church (MEC) eludes assessment because of the variety of congregational configurations and the unique intercultural environment. This article describes how leadership in one MEC harmonizes with and differs from basic cultural standards as expressed in James Kouzes and Barry Posner’s The Leadership Challenge. It follows an earlier case study (published in the Summer 2010 issue) about weaknesses that emerged at a DC-area MEC when Dan, the beloved pastor, resigned. Three new categories describe designs: the mall, the cinema, and the blend. Six new metaphors describe relationships among different cultural groups: renters, investors, neighbors, coworkers, siblings, …
A Theology Of Church Planting, Phil Stevenson
A Theology Of Church Planting, Phil Stevenson
Great Commission Research Journal
Does church planting need a theology of its own? Or is it enough for it to be informed by theological themes? This paper will attempt to address this conversation. It will show that, even though, church planting may fall outside the realm of traditional theology it is still a branch off the theological trunk. Church planting is an implementation of theological teaching. There are four theological foundations that inform the practice of church planting. They are critical for church planting reflection and framing. These are: Missio Dei, Incarnation, Kingdom of God, and Ecclesiology. Each of this will be explored and …
