Practices, Core Practices And The Work Of The Holy Spirit, David L. Stubbs
Practices, Core Practices And The Work Of The Holy Spirit, David L. Stubbs
Journal for Christian Theological Research
The recent interest in "practices" has created a multi-faceted discussion in theological circles that brings together insights from many disciplines such as ethics, philosophy, and cultural anthropology. However, there has been little extended analysis about how the many claims made about practices are related to quite similar claims traditionally made about the work of the Holy Spirit. In this paper, four distinctions are highlighted that can help us better conceptualize how the Holy Spirit might be related to different kinds of practices.
The Death Of Jesus And The Truth Of The Triune God In Wolfhart Pannenberg And Eberhard Juengel, Jonathan P. Case
The Death Of Jesus And The Truth Of The Triune God In Wolfhart Pannenberg And Eberhard Juengel, Jonathan P. Case
Journal for Christian Theological Research
For Pannenberg and Juengel the death of Christ has an integral role to play in instantiating in the life of God the critical moment necessary to their respective conceptions of truth. For Pannenberg a claim's capacity for truth lies in its ability to be disputed. Confirmation must follow if a claim is to be judged true, but even this confirmation is open to subsequent challenge. Truth is hence a historical process, only the end of which will bring about a definitive conclusion. Given this understanding of truth, the death of Christ on the cross is to be understood as a …

Recognizing The Presence Of Christ In The Liturgical Assembly, Judith M. Kubicki
Recognizing The Presence Of Christ In The Liturgical Assembly, Judith M. Kubicki
Theology Faculty Publications
The author discusses Christ's presence as perceived and symbolized when an assembly gathers to celebrate Eucharist. Her article consists of four parts: (1) a brief review of recent official church documents on the mode of Christ's presence; (2) an examination of how the relationship of Christ's presence in the eucharistic species to his presence in the Church gathered for worship has been articulated in Christian tradition and in selected 20th-century writings; (3) a consideration of Michael Polanyi's semiotics and Louis Marie Chauvet's theology of symbol; and (4) an application of their thinking to key symbols in the gathering rite of …

Teaching History As Creational Development, Paul Otto
Teaching History As Creational Development, Paul Otto
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
My object in this article is to share ways that my faith commitments are mamfest m my teaching of history It should be made clear from the outset that I currently teach, and have taught, at explicitly faith-based institutions—George Fox University and Dordt College—and this fact doubtless shapes what I have done m my classes, and how I have done it First, I will briefly summarize my understanding of history m terms of creational development and the exercise of human cultural formative power and its results Then I will share a few ways my pedagogy reflects this understanding or is …
James Wilson: Presbyterian, Anglican, Thomist, Or Deist?: Does It Matter? (Chapter 7 Of The Founders On God And Government), Mark Hall
Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics
Excerpt: "James Wilson is buried in America's Westminster Abby-Christ Church, Philadelphia. This Anglican church is only blocks away from the First Presbyterian church in Philadelphia, where Wilson rented a pew until the end of his life. Some scholars report that Wilson joined the Anglican Communion in 1778, perhaps at the behest of one his best friends, William White, the first Anglican bishop of Philadelphia. Others claim he that never abandoned the Presbyterianism of his native Scotland. Still others pay no attention to his denominational commitments, arguing that he was actually a Thornist or a deist. Finally, some scholars say nothing …
Jew And Christian In The New Testament, Lawrence Frizzell
Jew And Christian In The New Testament, Lawrence Frizzell
Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell
In general, anti-Jewish bias in the Christian community does not go back to the New Testament (NT) itself (since its authors were Jews) but arises shortly afterward through misreadings of ambiguous passages written by these Jews. What often passes for anti-Jewish sentiment in the NT is excerpted from a dispute within the Jewish community as to what it means to be a good Jew. When cited later by non-Jews, Paul's and John's passionate wording leant itself easily to anti-Jewish interpretation. The issues in Jewish-Christian relations from 30-100 CE are complex for several reasons. This article sketches certain aspects of these questions …
The Death Of Jesus And The Death Of The Temple, Lawrence Frizzell
The Death Of Jesus And The Death Of The Temple, Lawrence Frizzell
Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell
Whether he knew it or not, Mel Gibson touched on theological traditions formed long after the lifetime of Jesus in his movie, The Passion of Christ. To have them shape a movie that purports to tell a story set during the lifetime of Jesus – even if only in his last twelve hours – adds a confusing kind of anachronism to Gibson’s effort to “tell it like it was.” It (the movie) is as it (the history) wasn’t.To understand the place of the Temple in the lifetime and the piety of Jesus of Nazareth, we have to look beyond later …
What Child Is This? John Adams’S "El Niño", Paul G. Crowley
What Child Is This? John Adams’S "El Niño", Paul G. Crowley
Religious Studies
John Adams's oratorio, El Niño, which was commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, debuted in Paris in 2000. Like the much-praised La Pasion Segun San Marcos, a contemporary retelling of the Gospel of Mark by Osvaldo Golijov, it is not a classical work but a boldly unconventional approach to a sacred story, in this case the Annunciation and birth of Christ. El Niño refashions the story as the drama of a young Latino girl and her boyfriend in contemporary Los Angeles. When I saw El Niño in San Francisco in 2001, what really startled me was how far it pushed …
Scripture: Tool Of Patriarchy Or Resource For Transformation?, Sandra Marie Schneiders
Scripture: Tool Of Patriarchy Or Resource For Transformation?, Sandra Marie Schneiders
Jesuit School of Theology
If feminism is a major resource for the transformation of humanity and history in the direction of wholeness and hope, it is also a serious challenge to organized religion and e specially to Christianity because it calls into question the traditional theology of God and of human beings. But beneath these theological questions lies an even more fundamental issue, namely the question of biblical revelation. Th equestion, in its starkest terms, is whether or not the Bible teaches the maleness of God and the inferiority of women. In other words, is patriarchy divinely revealed and therefore divinely sanctioned? It would …

To Bolivia And Back: Migration And Its Impact On La Crete, Alberta, Dawn S. Bowen
To Bolivia And Back: Migration And Its Impact On La Crete, Alberta, Dawn S. Bowen
Geography Articles
The article focuses on the migration of Mennonites from Bolivia to La Crete, Alberta. It examines the social and economic impact of migration and outlines the measures taken by La Crete citizens as demands for housing, employment, and the provision of education and health services increased. It believes that the migration of the Mennonites, which started in the 1930s, affected the social and economic evolution of the said region and brought new economic opportunities including logging and sawmill work, trucking, and construction.
