Temple And Cosmos: Beyond This Ignorant Present, Hugh Nibley Jan 2002

Temple And Cosmos: Beyond This Ignorant Present, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

In Temple and Cosmos, Brother Nibley explains the relationship of the House of the Lord to the cosmos. In Temple, the first part of the volume, he focuses on the nature, meaning, and history of the temple, discussing such topics as sacred vestments, the circle and the square, and the symbolism of the temple and its ordinances.

In the second part, Cosmos, he discusses the cosmic context of the temple-the expanding gospel, apocryphal writings, religion and history, the genesis of the written word, cultural diversity in the universal church, and the terrible questions: Where did we come from? Why are …

Through Assyria's Eyes: Israel's Relationship With Judah, Tammi J. Schneider

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The goal of the Bible was not to record history, and the text does not shy away from theological explanations for events. Given this problematic relationship between sacred interpretation and historical accuracy, historians welcomed the discovery of ancient Assyrian cuneiform documents that refer to people and places mentioned in the Bible. Discovered in the 19th century, these historical records are now being used by scholars to corroborate and augment the biblical text, especially the Bible’s “historical books” of Kings. This field for comparison complements the recent trend among biblical scholars of using new interpretative methodologies and archaeology to question some …

Examining The Catholic Intellectual Tradition: Issues And Perspectives, Anthony J. Cernera, Oliver J. Morgan, Ed.

Sacred Heart University Press Books

This volume continues and expands on the conversations in Volume 1 about the vitality, influence and contemporary relevance of the Catholic intellectual tradition. The particular concern of this volume is to explore what it means to imbue that tradition in the day-to-day life at Catholic colleges and universities. Contributions focus on such topics as the responsibilities of being stewards of the Catholic intellectual tradition, the challenges and rewards of learning and teaching within that tradition, current perceptions of Catholic identity in academia and the ongoing task of harmonizing faith and reason.

Singing The Body Of God: The Hymns Of Vedāntadeśika In Their South Indian Tradition, Steven P. Hopkins Jan 2002

Singing The Body Of God: The Hymns Of Vedāntadeśika In Their South Indian Tradition, Steven P. Hopkins

Religion Faculty Works

Steven Paul Hopkins here offers a comparative study of the Sanskrit, Prakrit, and Tamil poems composed by Vedantadesika in praise of important Vaisnava shrines and their icons - poems that are considered to be the apogee of South Indian devotional literature. He examines the varied ways in which Vedantadesika the philosopher and logician works his thought through the distinctive - at times antithetical - medium of the poem. He also gives particular attention to the poems' emotional and visionary center of gravity: the different temple icons of Lord Vishnu, referred to by the poet simply as the various lovely bodies" …

En la Antología se encuentra una mina rica en artículos que …

Joseph As A Type Of Christ In Syriac Literature, Kristian S. Heal Jan 2002

Joseph As A Type Of Christ In Syriac Literature, Kristian S. Heal

BYU Studies

Kept among the marvelous manuscript treasures of the British Library is a fifth-century Syriac manuscript containing details of the lectionary readings, or Old and New Testament passages for religious services. Prominently featured among the Old Testament readings prescribed for Easter are the account of the binding of Isaac and excerpts from the story of Joseph. The story of binding Isaac is clearly apposite to the crucifixion. What is not so clear perhaps is the appropriateness of the story of Joseph as an Easter reading. This is in part because Joseph is often viewed in modern times solely as an example …

“Give Up All And Follow Your Lord”: Testimony And Exhortation In Early Mormon Women's Letters, 1831–1839, Janiece Johnson Jan 2002

“Give Up All And Follow Your Lord”: Testimony And Exhortation In Early Mormon Women's Letters, 1831–1839, Janiece Johnson

BYU Studies

Women composed a significant portion of the early converts who would follow Joseph Smith over hundreds of miles and through the fires of persecution. Lucy Mack Smith, Rebecca Williams, Phebe Peck, and Melissa Dodge represent well the dedication and testimony of such early Latter-day Saint women. Despite separation from loved ones and the dangers and difficulties they would face as Church members, religion was the guiding factor in their lives. These women testified of the value of their experiences and exhorted others to "give up all and follow your Lord" regardless of the trials that were required of them.
