Jean-Luc Marion’S Theology Of Eucharistic Presence, Nicholas Coffman Jan 2008

Jean-Luc Marion’S Theology Of Eucharistic Presence, Nicholas Coffman

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This work was originally submitted as part of a phenomenological exploration for a course on Eucharistic theology under the direction of Fr. Kevin Seasoltz, OSB. The assignment parameters included research and examination of a contemporary theological issue concerning Eucharist on a graduate level of engagement. This paper includes a discussion of two distinct Marion scholars, their insights, and Marion’s treatment of the concepts of icon and idol, which are central to his conception of presence. It contains my translation of question 75, article IV in the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. This section functions as a linguistic hermeneutic device for …

Wittgenstein And Worship: Investigations Of Liturgical Language-Games And Their Formative Role In Christian Identity, Michelle Kathleen Weber Jan 2008

Wittgenstein And Worship: Investigations Of Liturgical Language-Games And Their Formative Role In Christian Identity, Michelle Kathleen Weber

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

I argue that the Christian community’s religious language games, particularly liturgical action (theologia prima) and theological reflection (theologia secunda), mutually shape and correct one another. I demonstrate this using Wittgenstein’s philosophical method, adapting his approach to philosophy for theological use. The first part of this essay explains and demonstrates Wittgenstein’s philosophical method. The second part is an application of his method (with my own adaptation of this method for theology) with Christian liturgy as its subject. The third part of this essay discusses ways in which Wittgenstein’s approach might be adapted further in a fruitful way …

Community In The Theology Of Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, Nicholas Coffman Jan 2008

Community In The Theology Of Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, Nicholas Coffman

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This work began as a term paper for an Independent Learning Project with Dr. Cahoy and Ben Durheim. From our discussions, it became clear that on a literal level, Kierkegaard’s vision of Christianity is largely individualistic in emphasis. This work critiques this assertion through a wider engagement of several texts, illustrating the seminal Christian position of Kierkegaard. The analysis begins with secondary source appraisals of Kierkegaard as theologian, to clarify this endeavor as distinct from an exclusively philosophical pursuit. Next, Kierkegaard’s major psychological understandings are addressed, revealing hidden potential for the role of community in authentic faith. Finally, this work …

"The End Of Faith?" Science And Theology As Process, Noreen L. Herzfeld Oct 2007

"The End Of Faith?" Science And Theology As Process, Noreen L. Herzfeld

Theology Faculty Publications

A spate of recent books would claim that science’s only role vis a vis theology is to discredit it. Sam Harris, in The End of Faith, credits religious faith as the source of much of the violence in today’s world. Richard Dawkins, in The God Delusion, views religion as, at best, a profound misunderstanding, and at worst a form of madness. Both find an antidote to such irrationality in science. To Harris and Dawkins religion is a body of accumulated knowledge. However, religion can also be thought of as a process, one based on experience, questions, and results. …

Transforming Both The Gifts And The People: Eucharistic Presence, William Griffiths Jun 2007

Transforming Both The Gifts And The People: Eucharistic Presence, William Griffiths

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper reviews the history and development of the concept of “Eucharistic presence” and analyses an emerging synthesis of tradition, dogma and post- Vatican II sacramental theology that may help restore a more complete understanding of the real presence of Christ in the eucharistic species.

Active Participation And The Song Of The Assembly, William Griffiths Jun 2007

Active Participation And The Song Of The Assembly, William Griffiths

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper explores the connections between the Vatican II liturgical norm of “full, conscious and active participation” and the song of the assembly, with particular reference to the strophic hymn. The paper also examines the argument in the literature that the song of the assembly is theologia prima.

One Body, One Spirit, One Priesthood; Many Members, Many Charisms, Many Ministries: Reflections Anglican And Catholic, Cody C. Unterseher May 2007

One Body, One Spirit, One Priesthood; Many Members, Many Charisms, Many Ministries: Reflections Anglican And Catholic, Cody C. Unterseher

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This essay is an examination of the theology of ministry and its orders, written from an intentionally ecumenical and liturgically sensitive perspective. It develops a theology of ministry “grounded in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, mediated by the Holy Spirit in the sacramental experiences of Christian Initiation, and flowing from and leading to the liturgical assembly.” Drawing on the teachings of both Anglican and Roman Catholic traditions, it considers each order of ministry in relation to the other, and to the mission of the church as the community of the baptized, the body of Christ present in the …

Vulgar And Ascetic Christians: The Myth Of A Higher Spirituality The Rhetoric Of Monastic Profession As A Second Baptism, August L. Gothman May 2007

Vulgar And Ascetic Christians: The Myth Of A Higher Spirituality The Rhetoric Of Monastic Profession As A Second Baptism, August L. Gothman

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

It is the object of this paper to examine the roots of the rhetoric which developed almost as early as monasticism itself of monastic profession as a “second baptism.” The reader will see how Neo-Platonic thought contributed to the reinforcement of this rhetoric, and how it has been expressed down the ages in both the West and East. Further, this paper examines the challenges this rhetoric received at the hands of the Sixteenth Century Reformers. Finally, it suggests a way to move toward a deeper investigation of the ongoing challenges within the Roman Catholic Church to advance and reinforce a …

Celebrating The Communion Rite, Jay Stimac May 2007

Celebrating The Communion Rite, Jay Stimac

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

After our Prayer of Thanksgiving thunders to its climax with the singing of the Great Amen we are led to the altar-table to feast on the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. This ritual moment is the high point of the Eucharistic celebration. Our reception of the Body and Blood of Christ is both a profound statement of faith and a paradigm for how we are to live in the world as Christians. When we step forward to receive Holy Communion we declare our assent to be transformed into Christ’s hands and feet for the life of the …

Saint Basil: Monastic Reformer, Fr. Michael Calhoun Osb May 2007

Saint Basil: Monastic Reformer, Fr. Michael Calhoun Osb

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

Ascetical practices and theological disputes, in particular the Christological controversy initiated by the teaching of Arius, came to divide the ascetic groups of Asia Minor from the orthodox institutional church during the fourth century. Witnessing and experiencing the ascetical conflicts and theological divisions within the church was distressing for St. Basil. In the course of time, Basil would offer himself as an example of harmonizing the ascetic life with an orthodox union with the church. In order to demonstrate Basil as such a worthy example, I will show how Basil domesticated the ascetical currents of his locality by providing a …

“Allegorical Typologies” Of The Eucharist: An Analysis Of Some Eastern Liturgical Commentaries, Nathaniel G. Costa May 2007

“Allegorical Typologies” Of The Eucharist: An Analysis Of Some Eastern Liturgical Commentaries, Nathaniel G. Costa

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper examines four Eastern liturgical commentaries for their allegorical and typological understandings of the divine liturgy and its symbolic structures: the Baptismal or Catechetical Commentaries of Theodore of Mopsuestia (d. 428); Ecclesiastical Hierarchy of Pseudo-Dionysius (c. 5th century); The Church’s Mystagogy of Maximus the Confessor (580- 662); Ecclesiastical History and Mystical Contemplation of Germanus (c. 730). These typologies relate the elements and rites of the Eucharist to other historical events or higher realities, from historical reenactments of the life of Christ and the prefiguring of the heavenly kingdom, to the mind and soul’s symbolic journey toward the divine, to …
