St. John Chrysostom And His Message Of Social Justice Today, Joel Cassady
St. John Chrysostom And His Message Of Social Justice Today, Joel Cassady
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
Since its beginning, Christianity has challenged its members to stand up for the rights of the poor and to serve them. As early Christians faced issues of poverty, so do Christians today. Then, as now, Christians were called upon to change the very structures that took advantage of the poor or kept them in poverty. St. John Chrysostom firmly believed that in order to call oneself Christian, one must be mindful of one’s neighbor, and care for him and his needs. This paper will take a closer look at some of Chrysostom’s sermons in order to explore Chrysostom’s perspective on …

On ‘Chrism’ And ‘Anti-Christs’ In 1 John 2:18-27: A Hypothesis, Martin F. Connell
Theology Faculty Publications
This inquiry studies 1 John because it has the most explicit testimony in the New Testament to initiation by anointing and the unique word χρίσμα, "chrism." Chrism was — and in some churches still is — an ointment whose name is rooted in the verb χριειν, "to anoint." Critical studies have amply demonstrated that the title "Christ" had theological carriage in the first century, but rarely, if ever, has it been suggested that the theological title also had liturgical bearing. It seems almost too blithe a suggestion to posit that those who became members of the body of Christ, the …

Jesus The Christ As A Jun-Zi In Confucian Perspectives, John Changjin Bai
Jesus The Christ As A Jun-Zi In Confucian Perspectives, John Changjin Bai
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
In this paper, I seek to understand who Jesus is, through the lenses of “jun-zi 君子” (best translated as gentleman), a discussion and comparison between the concept of personhood of the jun-zi in Confucianism perspectives and the story of Jesus in the New Testament, I believe there is the possibility and implication to present an excellent image of Jesus the Christ as a jun-zi within Confucian personhood. Jesus, his ethical norm, high moral standard and religious life are like Confucian jun-zi. If we evangelize or evaluate the concepts of traditional Chinese Confucian jun-zi, Jesus would appear as a …

"Your Cell Will Teach You Everything": Old Wisdom, Modern Science, And The Art Of Attention, Noreen L. Herzfeld

Here is a brief excerpt of the content:
A brother came to Scetis to visit Abba Moses and asked him "Father, give me a word." The old man said to him "Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything." 1 Among the Desert Fathers, Christian monks of the fourth and fifth centuries, it was customary for a novice to go to an elder and ask for "a word," a word of advice, of counsel, a word to take home and reflect on. What does this word of advice say to us today?

An Exegesis Of 1 Corinthians 12:31 - 13:1-3, Gregory Congote Osb
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
At the presentation on 1 Corinthians, I wondered why the Apostle Paul had written this piece that did not seem to be connected to the whole letter. This paper gives response to this question. The first part talks about the basic historical, social, cultural and literary contexts of the passage. The second, which is the formal analysis, considers the literary genre and the literary form of the passage, its structure and its movement. That is, how the text flows from beginning to end. The detailed analysis is a verse-by-verse discussion of 12:31 to 13:1-3. At the end there is a …
Ego Eimi Formula And A Sense Of Continuity In John’S Gospel Chapter Sixth (Jn 6: V.20, Vss.35-58), John Changjin Bai
Ego Eimi Formula And A Sense Of Continuity In John’S Gospel Chapter Sixth (Jn 6: V.20, Vss.35-58), John Changjin Bai
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper examines John’s Gospel chapter six (vs.20, vss.35-58) in light of the formula “ego eimi” (“I am”) that occurs four times within it. The formula shapes the content of chapter six and gives continuity to the two sections (vss.35-50 and vss.51-58) that have generated theological disagreements. My goal is to demonstrate that the sacramental perspective implicit in the first section is made explicit in the second with ego eimi being the hinge in vs.51. Ego eimi will be shown as revelatory and as developing the eucharistic and sapiential themes of chapter six (vs. 20, vss. 35-58).

Stories In Stained Glass: An Analysis Of The Stained-Glass Windows At Saint Norbert Abbey In De Pere, Wisconsin, Timothy A. Johnston
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper examines the relationship between the Rule of Saint Augustine, the Constitutions of the Order of Premontre, and the stained glass windows of Saint Norbert Abbey. Further, it discusses how the windows signify and reflect the Norbertine Canons' mission to preach the Gospel in their apostolic ministry. After tracing a brief history of Saint Norbert of Xanten and the early history of the American mission, this paper continues with a discussion on Abbot Killeen's (the second abbot of St. Norbert Abbey) vision to build a new abbey in the context of papal conservatism and modem art. The main body …
