Taking In: A Selection Of Undergraduate Photography 2013, Aib Students

Taking In

Taking In is a student run project featuring a selection of work created by students attending the Art Institute of Boston. The project focuses on the business of promoting art and culminates each year with a juried exhibition, publication, and a website all designed to promote selected works of AIB artists. The selected pieces were chosen anonymously by a jury of distinguished members of the Boston art community to represent the best of AIB Photography in 2013. The book in your hands is the end result of a collective effort by those in the class.

As teachers, writers, activists, and members of the progressive retirement community Pilgrim Place, they’ve had a significant influence on the global environmental movement. The photographs and small essays in this project highlight who they are and what they’ve done, and how they continue to shape contemporary intellectual discourse. This thesis is a personal exploration through playful and childlike imagery. I draw on historical and contemporary artistic influences to the creation of my concepts. Themes of visual metaphor, trompe l’oeil, diorama, and contrasting spatial relationships of objects are explored. Each piece carries its own interpretation that is kept open ended for the viewer. My goal for this art series is to amuse, provoke imagination, and encourage individual interpretation.

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

Three students from Kenyon University in the United States participated in this unit. There were three main objectives. The first was to enable a reading of Western Australian writing in its relationship to the landscape - physical, social, and historical. The second was to locate Western Australian writing within the post-colonial perspective of Australian writing. The third was to formulate an appropriate theoretical framework for this. The central activity was a ten journey through the mid-west of western Australia. This intense experience was the equivalent of a whole semester's single unit workload.

Investigation Of The Home, A Metaphor For Belonging, Jeremy Eldridge

The research done for this investigation deals with both the motivation of the artist, the personal history and the individual's artistic process. This process is examined through two bodies of art work dealing with the home as a metaphor. The shared themes of belonging, loss and longing are further reinforced by "visual cues" represented in the photographic works. For the Home Divided series, I approached the style of the photographs and the subject matter through indexical photographs of multi-unit homes and the visual representation of a distinct and bilateral division of the structure. The line separating phenomenon and science has become blurred in the investigation of ley lines. Ley lines can be described as “invisible” lines that link different places of interest and significance, either historical or geographical. This is a very loose definition, but it must remain vague, as it has to account for the various understandings of the lines. The idea that photographs can be explained as traces made by the things they depict has been a recurring paradigm in theories about the nature of the photographic medium. Walter Benjamin, Charles Sanders Peirce, Susan Sontag, Andre Bazin and Roland Barthes are a few of the many theorists who have used the paradigm of the trace to explain the nature of photographs. The paradigm can also be argued to have been a significant influence in the work of prominent artists such as Gerhard Richter, Adam Fuss and Cornelia Parker whose work has explored the photographic medium. This body of work includes both black and white photographs and a film. In each work, I put my collaborators in an environment consisting of a simple black curtain, to neutralize the space, and a 2 foot by 2 foot glowing orb of light. I asked my subjects to interact with the glowing orb in any way they felt most comfortable. I adjusted my collaborators only to keep them from leaving the frame of my camera. I had always wanted a way to reach out to high school girls who faced the modern complexities of beauty; what is beautiful and how do we decide what is beautiful. My goal, through the teachings of photography, was to show the girls there is beauty all around us - in everyone and everything. The girls learned photographic basics as well as how to capture natural aesthetics. By encouraging their creativity and exploration of beauty, many of the girls found confidence in themselves as females and as artists, and produced beautiful photographs along the way.
