Image’Nation : The Search For A Folk Image Of Ireland In Art And Popular Culture, 1849 To 1949., Ciarán Walsh

Theses

This study considers how visual images became central to the folk imagination of Irishness between 1849 and 1949. It begins with contrasting representations in photography of the Irish in the 1890s. The political/cultural contexts of images of Irishness is established and developed with reference to the juxtaposition of contemporary visual arts, folk song and nationalism in Kilmainham Gaol in 1991. It considers whether distinct cultural systems have historically competed for legitimacy and whether, specifically, art and tradition are incompatible in terms of a nationalist construction of Irishness. The history and development of photography in Jerusalem is a topic intimately connected with the religious significance and the complex socio-political history of the city. Several studies have been published on the subject. However, they deal, almost in their totality, with either European or early Zionist photography. The study of the development of photography as a craft practised by Jerusalem's indigenous population has been almost totally neglected. With the exception of a short chapter in a book written in Hebrew, no studies have been conducted on the subject.1 The topic is both vast and complex. The following essay offers an …

Following in the Footsteps of the Wright Brothers: Their Sites and Stories

Today, one hundred years after the Wright Brothers conducted their research leading to powered flight, we can revisit the period between 1900 and 1905. We know what the brothers did, and how they did it, largely because the Wrights conscientiously recorded their work both visually and verbally. In this sense, they showed an extraordinary dimension of their inventiveness. The camera was an important instrument of their research. The Wright Brothers as inventors had a unique understanding of the power of photography to make an accurate representation of reality (Nolan, 1984). As a result, the Wright Brothers have left us a …

This collection of photographs was donated in 1976 by Leigh W. Osborn, sister of El Paso author Owen P. White. The images in this collection consist primarily of postcards about the Mexican Revolution (1910 to c.1920). The majority of the images are of Madero’s camps or military officials and soldiers.

Finding Aids

Photographs by college staff made (for the most part) after the move to the Southside campus in 1964/1965. Portraits of faculty form the largest part of the collection, also photos of: campus, buildings, students, staff, and events on campus. Especially: graduation, sports and beauty pageants. Some of the photos were published in The Geechee, Armstrong’s yearbook for 1967 and 1968, the yearbook was used to help identify the persons photographed.

Dorothea Lange In Utah, 1936-1938: A Portrait Of Utah's Great Depression, James R. Swensen

Theses and Dissertations

In his 1978 biography of Dorothea Lange, Milton Meltzer appraised Lange's 1936 photography in Utah as nothing more than mundane work done for the benefit of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and not for her own benefit as a photographer. Yet, her work in Utah encapsulates the aspirations, goals, and styles of Lange, and gives insight into her vision as a photographer and representative of the New Deal. Through carefully composed photographs, Lange shows the hardships and hope of life in Utah during the Great Depression.

Making Histories: The Torres Strait Expedition Of 1898, Elizabeth Edwards

Pacific Studies

The Cambridge Torres Strait Expedition used photography to address two agendas, both of which were grounded in the temporal ambiguities of photography. Photography was used first as an integrated tool of anthropological investigation, particularly in the field of salvage ethnography and through “reenactment”; and second as a site of social interaction between the expedition and the Torres Strait Islanders through the exchange and display of photographs. I argue that these two agendas and their function as “history” are grounded in the temporal ambiguities inherent in photographic inscription. In Search Of “Men Of Nature”: Paul Wirz’S Photography In New Guinea, 1916–1955, Andrea E. Schmidt

Between 1916 and 1955 the Swiss anthropologist and collector Paul Wirz (1892– 1955) took several thousand photographs during his research trips to New Guinea, where he stayed with the Marind-anim of the south coast, at Lake Sentani, in the highlands with the Western Dani and the Enga, at the Papuan Gulf (Gogodala), and in the Sepik and Maprik areas. For his black-and-white–dominated photography Wirz used first gelatin dry-plate technology, later roll film. The photographs served as illustrations for his numerous publications, and, sometimes hand-colored, as lantern slides for his lectures. In content, Wirz believed that photography should above all document …
