Values and Objectivity in Science illustrates many of the ethical issues that arise concerning scientific practices and applications, offering an account of how social and ethical values play important roles in science. Hugh Lacey develops and clarifies his previous analysis by arguing for the importance of research being conducted under a plurality of strategies, contrasting materialist strategies with agro-ecological strategies. By displaying the structure of current ethical controversies about the legitimacy of planting transgenic crops, this book illustrates that sound thinking on such issues must be grounded on an adequate philosophy of science, one that can clearly distinguish between the …

Scientists make judgments of value all the time. They usually evaluatetheir theories according to “cognitive values” (empirical adequacy, power tomake predictions, explanatory power etc). But a theory can also be evaluatedaccording to non-cognitive values (social, political, economical, etc). Legitimation of public policies that support the widespread plantings of transgenic crops presuppose, among other conditions, that (1) evidence supports that there are no unmanageable environmental risks and (2) there are no better ways to produce enough nourishing food that can dispense with the transgenics-oriented ways. This paper discusses: (a) the kinds of scientific inquiry that are needed to address (1) adequately, (b) the connections between investigations of (1) and (2), and (c) how these investigations are related with controversial social values.

It is useful to work with a model of the practices of scientific research that proposes that there are three key moments at which choices must be made: the moments of (i) adopting a strategy (or methodological rules), (ii) accepting theories, and (iii) applying scientific knowledge. Social values may have legitimate and important roles at the first and third moments, but not the second, where only cognitive values and available empirical data have essential roles. The distinction between cognitive and social values is needed to maintain this model, and thus to sustain the view that impartial scientific knowledge can be …

In this book Richard Eldridge presents a clear and compact survey of philosophical theories of the nature and significance of art. Drawing on materials from classical and contemporary philosophy as well as from literary theory and art criticism, he explores the representational, expressive, and formal dimensions of art, and he argues that works of art present their subject matter in ways that are of enduring cognitive, moral, and social interest. Here is a common picture of what American philosophy looks like to and within many American philosophy departments. To a considerable degree, it does not exist at all. Most departments do not feel obliged to teach American philosophy as they do modern philosophy (Descartes to Kant) and ancient Greek philosophy. It is normally not part of the requirements for a major. Of course, writings by Americans are mostly what do get taught, but they are taught as just philosophy, not as American philosophy. The idea that science is "value free" can be traced back to the emergence of the distinction between fact and value in the 17th century. It can be considered to have three components: impartiality, neutrality and autonomy. We show that important parts of these component ideas were developed and defended by Galileo, principally in his letters to Castelli and to Grand Duchess Cristina and in his books The Assayer and Two Chief World Systems. Galileo's argument for autonomy is particularly powerful and, although lacking the generality introduced in later arguments (since his principal concern was to win autonomy for science …

Has Romanticism been superseded by realism, modernism, and postmodernism, all of which are often taken to acknowledge reality more fully than Romanticism? What is it that Romantic thinkers and writers do? Why does what they do matter? Is Romanticism a think of the past? "These challenging essays defend Romanticism against its critics.
