As Sementes E O Conhecimento Que Elas Incorporam, Hugh Lacey Jan 2000

As Sementes E O Conhecimento Que Elas Incorporam, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

Values And The Conduct Of Science: Principles, Hugh Lacey Jun 1999

Values And The Conduct Of Science: Principles, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

In this paper I will propose six principles governing the proper role of moral and social values in the conduct of scientific uivestigation. I offer them for your consideration, and hope that together we can sharpen their formulatton, explore their implications and test their acceptability. In making my proposals I draw considerably from my recent books, Valores e Atividade Científica (VAC, Lacey 1988) and Is Science Value Free? Values and Scientific Understanding (SVF, Lacey 1999a) The detailed argument, and elaboration of the technical notions that I use are to be found in them (and summarized in Lacey 1999c). The sketch …

Is Science Value Free?: Values And Scientific Understanding, Hugh Lacey

Philosophy Faculty Works

Exploring the role of values in scientific inquiry, Hugh Lacey examines the nature and meaning of values, and looks at challenges to the view, posed by postmodernists, feminists, radical ecologists, Third-World advocates and religious fundamentalists, that science is value free. He also focuses on discussions of 'development', especially in Third World countries.

Interview With Richard Eldridge, W. Desmond, Richard Thomas Eldridge

Philosophy Faculty Works

Desmond: Talking to Richard on the way over, I proposed that our discussion would focus on the theme of autonomy and embeddedness or relatedness. This is a recurrent concern in all of Richard’s writing. I thought it would be a good idea to look at this issue of autonomy and embeddedness in a variety of different forms, in relation to different philosophers that have influenced the work of Richard, but also in a variety of different domains such as ethics, aesthetics or literature, romanticism. In the latter the question of the interplay between art and religion also comes up as …

Beyond Representation: Philosophy And Poetic Imagination, Richard Thomas Eldridge Jan 1996

Beyond Representation: Philosophy And Poetic Imagination, Richard Thomas Eldridge

Philosophy Faculty Works

The essays in this volume explore the ways in which traditional philosophical problems about self-knowledge, self-identity, and value have migrated into literature since the Romantic and Idealist periods. How do so-called literary works take up these problems in a new way? What conception of the subject is involved in this literary practice? How are the lines of demarcation between philosophy and literature problematized. The contributors examine these issues with reference both to Romantic and Idealist writers and to some of their subsequent literary and philosophical inheritors and revisers. Their essays offer a philosophical understanding of the roots and nature of …

Althusser And Ideological Criticism Of The Arts, Richard Thomas Eldridge Jan 1993

Althusser And Ideological Criticism Of The Arts, Richard Thomas Eldridge

Philosophy Faculty Works

Louis Althusser's 1970 essay “Ideology and ideological state apparatuses” is arguably the most influential and important document in contemporary critical practice and its theory. In one way this is puzzling, for the essay contains almost nothing that can be recognized as an argument. It does not put forward a causal theory of the rise and fall of forms of social life. It offers no deductions, and it contains only a few sketchily described examples of ideologies. The essay is instead filled with oracular pronouncements, couched in a terminology partly invented and partly cobbled together from the Marxist tradition and from …
