Thematic Synthesis: Rethinking Generative Music With Compositional Understanding In Game And Software Development, Jasper Moore Tucker

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Generative music, first introduced by composers like Brian Eno and David Cope in the mid-to-late 20th century, has evolved through many stages, with diverse applications across music and technology companies as well as the game industry. A Method For The Measurement Of The Latency Tolerance Range Of Western Musicians, Jorge Medina Victoria May 2019

A Method For The Measurement Of The Latency Tolerance Range Of Western Musicians, Jorge Medina Victoria

PhDs

This thesis presents a new systematic method to measure the ability of western musicians to cope with latency. The core of the method is a listening test and the development of a measure. The viability of the method is statistically tested with an empirical observation of 31 test subjects performing on 17 different musical instruments.

The primary goal of the investigation is the development of a systematic, reliable and replicable method that can be applied to different western music instruments, in order to provide data for analysis on latency issues while performing music in non-collaborative performances. In addition, a measure …

Making music more open: copyright, conservation and access issues

IP rights around music have come under increasing stress in the digital age. The demands of consumers for cheap, perpetual access to any and all types of music has clashed with copyright owners and artists seeking to preserve or grow existing revenues. But this emphasis on commercial rights in music has led to one area being neglected. That is music and performance of historical or niche value, especially that held by museums …
