Effects Of Chair Testing In Orchestra On Student Motivation: Student Perspectives And Applications From Motivational Theories, Rosanna Christine Honeycutt
Effects Of Chair Testing In Orchestra On Student Motivation: Student Perspectives And Applications From Motivational Theories, Rosanna Christine Honeycutt
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine how string students perceive achievement on chair testing through the lens of attribution and achievement goal motivational self-theories. A teacher survey was administered to identify the goals of chair testing in two high school and seven middle school orchestra classrooms. A student survey was used to collect data in those same classrooms on (a) the reasons why students do and do not do well on chair tests, (b) the perceived goals of chair testing and (c) the ratings of motivation and self-achievement. Qualitative techniques were used to analyze attributions within both …
Bach-To Ysaÿe: History And Performance Considerations Of Sonata No. 2, Mai Vestergaard
Bach-To Ysaÿe: History And Performance Considerations Of Sonata No. 2, Mai Vestergaard
Honors Scholar Theses
Eugene Ysaÿe’s Violin Sonata No. 2 has been influenced by the baroque music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the musical techniques brought forth by the Franco-Belgian Violin School. Each sonata movement has musical elements incorporating virtuosic techniques such as ponticello, chromaticism, and emphasis of the tri-tone. The performer draws attention to the audience by using advanced performance practices to change the piece's color and story. Ysaÿe engages with these ideas to share a musical and personal journey through each sonata movement, dedicating it to Jacques Thibaud. This violin sonata is a pinnacle to the violin repertoire, emphasizing the importance of …
Our Perception Of Scary Sounds: A Comparison Of Films And Popular Music, David Puhl
Our Perception Of Scary Sounds: A Comparison Of Films And Popular Music, David Puhl
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
My Capstone Research Paper will be an analysis on the usage of “scary” sounds performed in popular music as well as a comparison to the practice of using similar sounds in film, making a note of any similarities or differences (ex. audience perception, use of visuals). I will also touch on the integration of scary sound effects alongside music scoring for film, specifically in the Horror and Suspense genres. With popular music being my primary focus, I want to elaborate on the cognitive psychology of audiences (in film and music) and their reactions to "scary" or "horrific" sounds to better …
Innovative Marching: A Look Into The Innovation Of Dci, Sarah Ann Kano
Innovative Marching: A Look Into The Innovation Of Dci, Sarah Ann Kano
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This paper analyzes unique innovations from five Drum Corps International (DCI) shows: 2008’s show Spartacus performed by Phantom Regiment, 2011’s show Angels and Demons performed by the Cadets, 2013’s show E=MC2 performed by Carolina Crown, and lastly 2014’s shows Tilt performed by the Bluecoats and Fellinisque performed by the Blue Devils. In each judging caption I have explored how each show met the expectations of that caption, if it has a new approach to the caption, if that approach is truly innovative, and if it has been emulated. This analysis suggests that even if the judging captions can sometimes inhibit …

The World Is About To Turn: Imagining A New Ecclesiology For Emerging Adults Through Missional Music Ministry, Kevin A. Turner
The World Is About To Turn: Imagining A New Ecclesiology For Emerging Adults Through Missional Music Ministry, Kevin A. Turner
Doctor of Pastoral Music Projects and Theses
How can ministry leaders in the twenty-first century provide guidance for those who are the leading edge of the church's next generation? How might emerging adults become contributors to congregations where they are given space to offer and plan for themselves rather than passively acquiesce to traditional church structures where a strict, top-down leadership style dominates? In conversation with author Letty Russell, this paper will describe a more democratic vision of ecclesiology for music ministry and ministries of the larger church. The methodology employed in this thesis involves a case study examining the creation of a choral ensemble focusing on …

Singing Out: Gala Choruses And Social Change, Heather Maclachlan
Singing Out: Gala Choruses And Social Change, Heather Maclachlan
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
Can you change the world through song? This appealing idea has long been the professed aim of singers who are part of choruses affiliated with the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). Theses choruses first emerged in the 1970s, and grew out of a very American tradition of (often gender-segregated) choral singing that explicitly presents itself as a community-based activity. By taking a close look at these choruses and their mission, Heather MacLachlan unpacks the fascinating historical and cultural dynamics behind groups that seek to change society for the better by encouraging acceptance of LGBT-identified people and promoting diversity …

Johann Strauss Ii's Die Fledermaus: Historical Background And Conductor's Guide, Jennifer Bruton
Johann Strauss Ii's Die Fledermaus: Historical Background And Conductor's Guide, Jennifer Bruton
Dissertations
Students pursuing graduate degrees in conducting often have aspirations of being high school or college choir or band directors. Others want to lead orchestra programs in educational or professional settings. Sadly, many colleges and universities do not have systems in place that provide avenues for those choosing this career path. The curriculum should go beyond teaching the rudiments of baton technique. Students should receive instruction and practical experience, applying what they have learned. Lab bands and choirs are a helpful tool, but I believe opera programs provide an ideal and essential venue where conductors can not only improve and hone …

Stewarding College Music Training In America: The Emergence Of Music Entrepreneurship Education And The National Association Of Schools Of Music, Kathryn Louise Brown
Stewarding College Music Training In America: The Emergence Of Music Entrepreneurship Education And The National Association Of Schools Of Music, Kathryn Louise Brown
Theses and Dissertations
As the only nationally recognized accreditor for American postsecondary music units, the National Association of Music (NASM) determines quality standards for American music training. In an effort to improve professional outcomes for music school graduates, NASM added an entrepreneurial component to both graduate and undergraduate accreditation standards as early as 1999. References to entrepreneurship within NASM conference proceedings increased between the mid-1960s and 1995, as NASM stewarded American college music training through numerous sustainability challenges resulting from intense technological, economic, political, and cultural change. Music entrepreneurship education emerged from the development of curricular innovations in response to these challenges: music …

J.K. Mertz’S Bardenklänge: A Context For The Emergence Of The Character Piece Genre Within The Repertoire For Solo Guitar, Brinsley Doran
Masters
Having experience a large increase in concert activity in recent years, one would assume that the works of J.K. Mertz (1806–1856) would haveexperience the same level of attention within academic circles, however research is still limited. As a result, this thesissetsout to understand in what areas do Mertz's works differ fromother guitar works in the first half of the nineteenth century—specifically Mertz's set of character piecesfound in hisBardenklänge, op. 13. This thesiswill address shifts in culture, aesthetics and the increasing interest in the ‘Folk’c.1800–1850 that led to the composition of Mertz’s Bardenklänge. Published in 1847, these works are unique in …

In Her Own Hands: How Girls And Women Used The Piano To Chart Their Futures, Expand Women's Roles, And Shape Music In America, 1880–1920, Sarah F. Litvin
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
American girls and women used the parlor piano to reshape their lives between 1880 and 1920, the years when the instrument reached the height of its commercial and cultural popularity. Newspapers, memoirs, biographies, women’s magazines, personal papers, and trade publications show that female pianists engaged in public-facing piano play and work in pursuit of artistic expression, economic gain, self-actualization, social mobility, and social change. These motivations drove many to use their piano skills to play beyond the parlor, by studying in conservatory, working as classical and popular music performers and composers, founding and teaching at schools, working as department store …
