Sounds Of Space: Utilising The Sonic Language Of Space Music In Music Production, Chris Lambert

Postgraduate

Research examining the relationship between popular music and outer space has largely focused on lyrical themes, visual aesthetics, cultural meanings, and science-fiction film soundtracks. Comparatively little attention has been paid to the sonic devices through which popular music represents the cosmic and extra-terrestrial. This study addresses that gap by identifying and analysing the sonic language of space music across a broad range of popular music traditions from the 1950s to the present. Using thematic analysis of musical texts and a practice-led research methodology, the project examines recurring sonic signifiers associated with outer space, sciencefiction futurism, and imagined extra-terrestrial environments. “Music for Mental Health: Increasing Awareness and Promoting Wellness” examines how music might raise mental health awareness and act as a coping resource. Specifically, it 1) argues for the connection between music and mental health, 2) presents a case study of select BTS songs that have been useful in promoting mental health, and 3) describes the efforts of Classical Healing Keys, a non-profit organization designed by the author as a proposal to promote mental health through classical music.

Margaret Rowell: Pedagogical Approach And Teaching Style, Robert-Christian Sanchez

While there are numerous biographical details about Margaret Avery Rowell’s life, few details exist about her pedagogy. The current researcher interviewed and subsequently analyzed transcripts from eight of Rowell’s former students to reconstruct her pedagogical approach and teaching style. The researcher’s questions were: 1) How did Rowell structure individual lessons and student development? 2) What were the recurring concepts within Rowell’s principles? 3) What exercises did Rowell use to teach her principles? 4) What personal and pedagogical qualities made Rowell an effective teacher and influence on her students?

This research paper examines how John Williams’s film scores convey an emotional narrative to the audience. First, the literature review will discuss pertinent theories on film music and emotions informing the current research. The paper then establishes Williams’s composing style, and centers on his connection to the classical symphonic composers and to the film music of the Golden Age of Hollywood. The research then analyzes how John Williams’s music influences emotions in prominent scenes from several of his films including Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Empire Strikes Back.
