An Analysis Of The Improvisational Techniques Of Gene Harris, Gianni Bianchini
An Analysis Of The Improvisational Techniques Of Gene Harris, Gianni Bianchini
University Presentations
There were multiple reasons for me to compose this document. I have been listening to Gene Harris since I was a child and have always been captivated by his use of diatonic language in his improvisation along with his innate ability to create energy throughout his solos. As I continued to research Harris, I discovered that he was dismissed by many critics, has minimal literature written about his work and is largely forgotten by most jazz fans and even some jazz musicians when regarding the upper echelon of jazz pianists. All of these factors inspired me to write my dissertation …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Percussion Works By Stanley Leonard, Kyle Douglas Cherwinski
An Annotated Bibliography Of Percussion Works By Stanley Leonard, Kyle Douglas Cherwinski
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Timpanist, pedagogue, and composer Stanley Leonard has written over one hundred and twenty pieces for percussion, including solos, ensemble pieces, and method books. Several musical techniques are represented in his body of work, including traditional harmony, twelve-tone technique, graphic notation, and improvisation. The purpose of this document is to catalog all of these items into one source as a reference for other percussionists.
The document begins with biographical information, including his impressive performing career, his years as an educator, and the circumstances that led to his composition career. This required interviewing Leonard as well as reading several of the articles …
Sounding The Congregational Voice, Marissa Glynias Moore
Sounding The Congregational Voice, Marissa Glynias Moore
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Congregational singing is a participatory vocal practice undertaken by Christians across a wide range of denominations, yet the specific qualities and active capacities of the congregational voice have yet to be investigated. Drawing on recent musicological and philosophical perspectives on voice, I theorize the congregational voice as an active practice, illuminating its abilities to do something in worship through sound.
Taking Brian Kane’s model of the voice as a circulation of content (logos), sound (echos), and source (topos), I explore how these categories are redefined through an active-based theorization of congregational singing. I argue that …

The Well-Rounded Musician: A New Degree Path For Horn In Jazz, Lauren M. Braud
The Well-Rounded Musician: A New Degree Path For Horn In Jazz, Lauren M. Braud
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The following document will examine the question of whether horn players should be trained in jazz at the collegiate level. Should research prove that teaching horn players to play jazz is a viable degree, how should it be done? How should it be taught? Should classical training be dropped from the curriculum for these students?
A brief history of jazz and horn players who were well known for their performance and study of jazz are discussed. The main research portion contains a survey of current jazz professors and performers. The survey looks into the formal training of these professors and …

State Of The Art: A Sampling Of Twenty-First-Century American Baroque Flute Pedagogy, Tamara Tanner
State Of The Art: A Sampling Of Twenty-First-Century American Baroque Flute Pedagogy, Tamara Tanner
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
During the Baroque flute revival in 1970s Europe, American modern flute instructors who were interested in studying Baroque flute traveled to Europe to work with professional instructors. They then transmitted that knowledge to their students upon returning to America, furthering the modern study of Baroque flute in America. Now, thanks to their efforts and those of academic institutions and professional organizations such as the National Flute Association, there are many opportunities in America to hear performances by dynamic Baroque flutists, to perform and compete on Baroque flute, and to learn from respected Baroque flute instructors. There are also numerous texts …
A Cappella Bridge: Towards A More Reciprocal Arts-Based Exchange, Daniel Malin
A Cappella Bridge: Towards A More Reciprocal Arts-Based Exchange, Daniel Malin
Capstone Collection
A Cappella Bridge is a short-term, non-credit, arts-based exchange program for collegiate a cappella groups from the United States. This program proposal is the result of an extensive needs analysis that includes interviews with Education Abroad professionals and the founder of the Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA), a national nonprofit organization representing nearly 3,000 a cappella groups in the United States. The program’s design is meant to address a profound need for more reciprocal arts-based exchange programs open to highly skilled amateur artists and musicians. With a firm grounding in experiential learning and the seven-continuum transmission model for music education …

In February of 2015, a music sensation hit the streets of New York City and started a revolution across the country. The renowned Lin Manuel Miranda; composer, musician and actor, debuted his six-year creation - an integration of hip hop music into the world of Broadway through the sensational story of Alexander Hamilton. Based off of Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of Alexander Hamilton, this entirely musical production details the story of the poor immigrant who came to America with big ideas and wrote his way to being a predominate figure in American history (Miranda, 2016). Impressive choreography is combined with …

Real-Time Audio-Midi Controller, Brian Shino Balberchak
Real-Time Audio-Midi Controller, Brian Shino Balberchak
Computer Engineering
Most MIDI controllers used in music production use a regular keyboard to generate the MIDI notes that are sent to the synthesizer. This project aims to provide the user with a different way of generating MIDI data: by playing an instrument of their choice with a passive electronic pickup to generate MIDI notes that correspond with the fundamental frequency of the musical pitch being played. The pitch-detecting algorithm used in this application utilizes a modified form of auto-correlation.
As an embedded systems project that uses signal-processing techniques, the knowledge of topics from the following courses was essential:

Across The Ages Of Music And Emotions: What It Is To Be Human A Reflection On My Senior Voice Recital, Amanda Haverdink
Honors Projects
Creators and artists involve themselves in the passion and process of art as a way to discover what it is to be human. Such a notion has been central to my experiences at Grand Valley, growing as a student, as a performer, and as an individual. This recital aims to address four primary feelings (love, sadness, longing, and passion) that remind each of us what it is to be human. The pieces featured in this recital will explore a range of interpretations based on each emotion, depicting the multi-faceted and personal experience of feeling. Every performer has a unique interpretation …
