The History Of The Marimba, Daniel Rager

The author presents an international and historical history of one of the earliest melodic percussion instruments made by man. His research suggests the instrument was widespread throughout Asia and Africa, although many other regions claim it to have originated in their country.

Known by many names and created from an endless array of materials, this paper reflects the marimbas evolution from the fourteenth century to present day. The writer’s research encompasses the marimbas social roles, musical functions, timbres and styles across many countries as well as its evolution into the twenty-first century.

Aldebaran {Alpha Tauri} is presented as a programmatic work for symphony orchestra. The eight movements of the piece correspond with a different theme represented by various details of each particular film scene. Notably, the piece centers on a protagonist and antagonistic relationship that is characterized by the titles of the movements. This relationship can be examined by a closer study of excerpts from the piece. The “galactic” premier was held at the Keith Albee Theatre in Huntington, WV on April 13, 2007. The duration of the work is 5’55”.

The Missa Brevis displayed and discussed herein is composed for chamber choir, vocal soloists, and a chamber ensemble of nine instrumental performers. This setting of several sections of the Catholic Mass explores a narrative interpretation of that text, using a programmatic compositional approach, through which all parameters of music were systematically planned. The thesis is in two parts. Part One is an analysis of the composition, both in full and movement by movement, with regard to structure, harmonic contour, melodic design, timbral choices, and the compositional process required for its creation. Electroacoustic music for double bass can be classified into the following two types of repertoire: real-time/interactive computer music or tape music. Real-time/interactive computer music is the newer of the two types and involves the algorithmic generation of electronic sounds in live performance. Pre-recorded electronic sounds are usually avoided, and instead, the sound of live input is used as the source material for electronic sounds. A computer is used for capture, processing and synthesis, and the software is usually written in the MAX/MSP environment.
