This thesis analyzes Miyoshi Piano Method: 12 Progressive Propositions Piano Method written by Akira Miyoshi (1933-2013), a Japanese classical music composer. The study comprises three chapters, a bibliography, and two appendices. Chapter one consists of an introduction providing a brief history of the development of piano instructional methods and their development in Japan with an emphasis on the instructional works of Akira Miyoshi. Chapter 2 consists of an analysis of Miyoshi Piano Method inclusive of all twelve volumes. From the first stage of learning new repertoire, string pedagogy aims to present violinists with effective strategies to achieve accurate intonation in performance. The search for new teaching and learning strategies, whilst running the risk of being seen as unconventional compared to more tried and tested methods (i.e. Suzuki), can on the other hand provide the tutor with new tools for enhancing their teaching practice. Western Australian violinist Fleur Challen has developed a method titled Finger Frames; a learning strategy that uses a colour coding system to prepare a violinist for changes in left hand position, reducing the cognitive load …

This paper will begin with the history of special education and how legislation has shaped its implementation in the school system. The definitions and types of Down syndrome will then be discussed. Next, modifications for individuals with Down syndrome in the regular classroom and music classroom will be examined. Additionally, music therapy strategies will be included as it relates to music education. The paper will conclude with a description of curriculum adaptations for individuals with Down syndrome in the general music classroom. The fundamental purpose of teacher professional development programs is to improve instructional effectiveness and increase student learning. However, the target district offered no programs that focused on helping teachers develop strategies to meet state standards in music education. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate elementary and middle school music educators' perceptions regarding the need for targeted professional development programs. Self-determination theory served as the foundation for this study. An Investigative Study Measuring Self-Reported Metacognitive Habits Among Collegiate Piano Majors, Steven Phillip Brundage

The purpose of this study was to investigate self-reported metacognitive habits among collegiate piano majors. It examined the degree to which participants comprehend and employ practice strategies, recognize their own strengths and weaknesses in learning and performing, accurately predict a performance outcome, and self-evaluate following a performance. A total of twelve (N = 12) participants, six (N = 6) undergraduate and six (N = 6) graduate piano majors, enrolled in applied lessons at the University of South Carolina School of Music volunteered to participate in this study. The purpose of this recital is to demonstrate a practical competency in playing techniques on the rhythm section instruments piano, bass, and drum set in addition to presenting arrangements and compositions by the performer. The study of rhythm section instruments provides the solid understanding of jazz rhythm and harmony necessary for any jazz educator endeavoring to provide adequate instruction for his or her students. The study of jazz arranging and composition also aids in instructing students of jazz at any level of proficiency.
