Singing Schools In Southcentral Kentucky, Donald Beisswenger

Singing school teachers, who teach rural church congregations to sing from shape-note gospel songbooks, are still working in southcentral Kentucky, but the demand for them is smaller than it was in the first half of the twentieth century. The interdependence network in which singing school teachers, songbook publishers, and community singing events were key parts began to weaken in the 1940s as a result of the growth in popularity of professional gospel quartet concerts and gospel record albums. Guides to Manuscript Collections

The Jane Shepherd Papers consist of letters, contracts, printed programs, newspaper clippings, school papers and photographs, all related to her career as a mezzo-soprano and voice teacher. Printed programs of her performances between 1935 and 1979 comprise the bulk of the collection.

Other items relating to her professional singing career include a scrapbook and newspaper clippings of reviews, publicity material and photographs. Notes from classes, certificates and a transcript reflect her years as a student, from 1935 until 1946, at William Woods College, Fulton, Missouri; the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music; and the Juilliard School of Music. Source of Data

The data used as a basis for this study has been obtained chiefly from texts, contact with successful choral directors, and personal experiences.
