A Failure Of The Music Industry: The Frustration Of Women Of Color, Christina Estes-Wynne Jun 2019

A Failure Of The Music Industry: The Frustration Of Women Of Color, Christina Estes-Wynne

Backstage Pass

Throughout the history of the music industry, women of color have not received the same recognition as their male counterparts because males have dominated the industry resulting in lack of female representation. Women have been oversexualized reducing their clout in their fields and the lack of acknowledgement of success, which discourages future generations of colored women from attempting to reach their highest potential.

Modeling Melodic Dictation, David John Baker Jun 2019

Modeling Melodic Dictation, David John Baker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Melodic dictation is a cognitively demanding process that requires students to hear a melody, then without any access to an external reference, transcribe the melody within a limited time frame. Despite its ubiquity in curricula within School of Music settings, exactly how an individual learns a melody is not well understood. This dissertation aims to fill the gap in the literature between aural skills practitioners and music psychologists in order to reach conclusions that can be applied systematically in pedagogical contexts. In order to do this, I synthesize literature from music theory, music psychology, and music education in order to …

Stories Told Through Music: Soprano Aria "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" From Messiah And Peter And The Wolf Op. 67, Everett Scott Godwin Jun 2019

Stories Told Through Music: Soprano Aria "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" From Messiah And Peter And The Wolf Op. 67, Everett Scott Godwin

Masters Theses

From the beginning of creation, people have told stories and passed them down from generation to generation. Stories come to life through all forms of communication: watching a play, listening to a podcast, or looking at a picture are just a few examples. The best stories have been written down in manuscripts, books, novels, and then sometimes eventually written into a script for a movie. But something about music makes it one of the most compelling and exciting ways to portray a story. It is one of the earliest and long-lasting forms of storytelling. Every musical work tells a story …

The Effects Of Collaboration On Harmonization In College Group Piano, Yining Li May 2019

The Effects Of Collaboration On Harmonization In College Group Piano, Yining Li

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Current university-level group piano classes may not provide adequate training on functional keyboard skills needed by non-keyboard professional musicians. Innovative teaching strategies involving collaborative learning have been successfully demonstrated in other areas of education (e.g., math, science, and English) and might efficiently improve students’ functional keyboard skills. This dissertation examined the effects of collaborative learning on harmonization in college group piano classes. This study explored the differences between performance outcomes among students who collaborated to learn harmonization, as opposed to those who worked alone. It also investigated how collaborative work influenced students’ attitudes and confidence toward learning and performing harmonization. …

The Impact Of Informal Music Learning On Fifth Graders' Music Learning Processes And Perceptions Of General Music Class, Alejandro Juarez

Music Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe qualitatively the learning processes and perceptions of music class that emerged in a fifth-grade general music setting in which informal music learning processes were the fundamental components of the pedagogical approach. Initial research questions aimed to examine the ways students perceived their previous music classroom, how they used music outside of school, how informal music learning strategies impacted them, and how they believed popular musicians learned music. Students in this action research study were 50 fifth graders in two classes. Data were collected using many ethnographic techniques including interviews, questionnaires, and video/audio …

Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students’ Perceptions Of The Kodaly-Inspired Music Class, Katherine Simmons

Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning

This study focused on the perceptions of elementary students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing in a music class. The author was a preservice teacher serving her year-long clinical teaching. The goal of the study was to better understand deaf and hard-of-hearing students’ perceptions of a Kodaly-inspired class, their favorite aspects of music, what they believed would make their musical experience more enjoyable, and what areas of music that they, and their music teacher, believed they could improve. Qualitative data consisted of school records, surveys of the students and their interpreters, interviews of the students and music teacher, and observations of …
