Chamber ensembles are a valuable tool in music education. However, these ensembles are often overlooked or omitted from the school band program. These ensembles promote individual growth in multiple ways, boosting confidence, independence, reliability, and musicianship. While there already exists extensive repertoire covering the many different types of chamber ensembles, appropriate and diverse music geared towards younger clarinet trios can be very difficult to find.

Unfortunately, this growth in music education has become stagnant in the last century and pedagogy has remained relatively steady. While there are important pedagogical techniques and approaches used in the classical history of music, there are also new approaches that should be given more heed. Regardless of the ensemble, many musicians see value in honoring the intentions of a composer. The further in time one is removed from the composer, the harder this task can be. This is especially difficult with changes in what instruments are common and available. Mozart’s KV 439b, a collection of five multi-movement divertimentos, is believed to be originally written for a trio of the now-obsolete basset horn. This has led to a variety of arrangements and transcriptions for a wide range of ensembles of different sizes and instrumentations.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) lists music as part of a “well-rounded education,” yet several studies have shown that charter school students have less access to music than traditional schools. The purpose of this study is to explore if this trend extends to Florida charter middle school students. Of particular interest is whether the for-profit or nonprofit status of charter management organizations and school characteristics impact music course enrollment. Although some Japanese POW camps did not allow their prisoners to engage in recreational activities, inmates transformed songs into acceptable performance practices. The purpose of this study was to explore how the brain processes information, stores it in long-term memory and then applies that knowledge to teaching music in a classroom/rehearsal setting. We observed how the working memory, the system responsible for processing information from short-term and long-term memory can function with greater efficiency. We observed how the number of items available for processing in the working memory may be increased through a process identified as “chunking.” Chunking is when short patterns, or bits of information, are combined to form longer sequences. It can also cause performance injury.
