Within the field of music education, the history of marching band in public schools has not been thoroughly treated. By documenting the contributions of individuals in marching band, it is possible to obtain a better understanding of the position of marching band in education. A. R. Casavant gained national prominence through a theoretical approach to marching band instruction, execution, and drill design called precision drill. Formerly the band director at Chattanooga City High School, Casavant is currently retired and residing in Chattanooga, TN.
