An Examination Of The Role Of Macro- And Micro-Level Processes In John Adams's Phrygian Gates, James Edward Evans

Online Theses and Dissertations

The research presented in this thesis is an examination of processes at work on multiple levels within Phrygian Gates by John Adams. Previous analyses have presented detailed insights in specific areas, including proportion and temporality, closure, and the roles of process and intuition. This analysis draws from elements of other studies, expands upon them, and presents new research in pitch relationships and formal design in order to explore the interaction of those elements with regard to process and to present a comprehensive view of Phrygian Gates.

Chapter 1 discusses Phrygian Gates in the context of John Adams's compositional output …

Forgotten Russian Piano Music: The Sonatas Of Anatoly Aleksandrov, Irina Pevzner Jan 2013

Forgotten Russian Piano Music: The Sonatas Of Anatoly Aleksandrov, Irina Pevzner

Theses and Dissertations

This historical and analytical study focuses on the piano sonatas of Anatoly Aleksandrov (1888-1982), the longest-living Russian and Soviet composer-pianist of the twentieth century. The fourteen piano sonatas, written between 1922 and 1971, reflect not only the composer's evolution of style, but also reveal the vast array of influences which characterize the music of the twentieth century. Chromaticism that results from stretched harmonic sequences, strong melodic lyricism that threads these epic compositions, rich writing for piano, and hints of Russian folklore all contribute to the composer's original style, which synthesizes Aleksandrov's four main figures of influence, namely Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Medtner, …

Piano Proficiency Among Choral Directors, Heather Anderson Robertson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The purpose of this study was to examine the practice of using piano in the secondary choral rehearsal setting by examining the functional piano skills used and advocated for by current choral educators with the goal of determining if the level and type of preparation provided by university and college music education teacher preparation programs is adequate in terms of meeting choral directors’ “real world” needs. An electronic survey was disseminated to 514 middle school and high school choral directors currently serving in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Research was conducted based on usable responses (N=190) from two groups, those who …

Makiko Kinoshita And Her 9 Preludes For Piano: The Amalgam Of American Jazz And European Tradition, Mai Nagatomo

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Makiko Kinoshita is one of the leading contemporary composers in Japan. Kinoshita’s 9 Preludes (2001) is remarkable twenty-first century piano literature that provides abundant use of various musical styles. The most important style that Kinoshita combined with traditional Western writing is jazz; especially the rhythmic and harmonic language of Jazz music. This document provides a detailed analysis of Kinoshita’s unique treatments of form, tonality, harmony, rhythm, and motivic materials. The central section of this study employs musical examples in order to examine how Kinoshita fuses diverse elements of musical styles with modern musical language to create her own idiom. Along …

Ravel And Roussel: Retrospectivism In Le Tombeau De Couperin And La Suite Pour Piano, Op.14, Qingfan Jiang Apr 2012

Ravel And Roussel: Retrospectivism In Le Tombeau De Couperin And La Suite Pour Piano, Op.14, Qingfan Jiang

Papers

Urged by an increasingly pervading nationalism, many French composers at the beginning of the twentieth century sought to create unique French music by linking to their past musical traditions. This trend of the retrospective approach to musical composition is evident in the works of contemporary French composers such as Vincent d’Indy, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Albert Roussel. Of the latter two composers, however, personal stylistic traits differentiate their Retrospectivism on both the musical level and the aesthetic one.

Tiny Sounds, Valeria Ch. Jonard Perez Apr 2012

Tiny Sounds, Valeria Ch. Jonard Perez

Masters Theses

Our auditory system perceives sounds within a specific range of frequencies and amplitudes. It is the way we define our aural world and the sounds we are able or willing to hear. Just above the border of the threshold of human audition hearing, we find unique sounds with particular characteristics. These sometimes forgotten or ignored sounds interest me as compositional elements.

Listening attentively requires extra effort from our ears and concentration; listening to sounds that vacillate from imperceptible to audible changes how humans typically listen to sounds in their environment. Although amplifying these discreet sounds would rob them of their …

Integrating Composition In Music Education For Grades 2-5: An Interdisciplinary Study, Natalie Frances Griffin Feb 2012

Integrating Composition In Music Education For Grades 2-5: An Interdisciplinary Study, Natalie Frances Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

Composition is a vital aspect of music and music education. However, it is scarcely taught in elementary music classrooms. Can composition be taught to elementary students and will it be an enjoyable activity for them? Can instructors use compositions as a form of assessment? This research seeks to answer these questions through an original research study. Elementary students in grades 2-5 were taught composition and wrote two songs for the piano. These songs along with survey responses revealed that students are able to write compositions for the piano, that they want to learn more about song writing, and that each …

The Antebellum "Piano Girl" In The American South, Candace Bailey Jan 2012

The Antebellum "Piano Girl" In The American South, Candace Bailey

Performance Practice Review

Throughout the nineteenth century, the education of young gentlewomen almost always included music lessons, with piano lessons being the most frequently recommended. The social context for these young women pianists, “piano girls,” has been described in several modern works, particularly since Arthur Loesser’s seminal work Men, Women, and Pianos: A Social History.1 In the 1980s, Judith Tick made the term “piano girl” a familiar one in musicological studies, and since that time the idea of the piano girl and her role in society has been explored by others.2 Most of these studies describe the social phenomenon of the piano girl, …

The Life And Selected Piano Works Of David Burge, Mary Chung Aug 2011

The Life And Selected Piano Works Of David Burge, Mary Chung

Dissertations

Although David Burge is recognized as one of the most important American pianists dedicated to contemporary music in the twentieth century, little is known about his contributions as a pedagogue, lecturer, writer, novelist, and, especially, as a composer. This biographical study focuses on three of his piano compositions: Second Sonata, Eclipse II, and Go-Hyang. Each work represents one of three distinct compositional periods: the first reflects the influence of Prokofiev and features characteristics of the neoclassicism; the second marks a turn to experimentalism, atonality, and serialism; and the final indicates the return to a more traditional style that makes use …

Using Clare Fischer's Solo Piano Approach In Yesterdays To Reinterpret Jazz Standard Repertoire, Christopher N. Foster Jan 2011

Using Clare Fischer's Solo Piano Approach In Yesterdays To Reinterpret Jazz Standard Repertoire, Christopher N. Foster

Theses : Honours

Clare Fischer’s solo piano version of the Jerome Kern composition Yesterdays from his 1975 recorded album ‘Alone Together’, is not extensively known. It proves, however, to be an inherently paramount source for the study of harmony, rhythm, texture and solo jazz piano style. This paper defines the techniques used in this performance. Through a comprehensive transcription analysis, key aspects of Fischer’s solo piano style are discovered. This research extracts the defining aspects of this specific performance‐ then directly applies the musical techniques to show how they may be used to reinterpret and jazz standard. The current Fischer literature focuses primarily …

The Piano Music Of George Frederick Pinto, Aidan Boase

Theses : Honours

This dissertation explores the piano music of George Frederick Pinto, in the light of the output of the London Pianoforte School. This is followed by a discussion of his most significant works – the three Grand Sonatas for pianoforte, focusing on some of the influences on Pinto; and uses Hepokoski and Darcy’s Sonata Theory to make an …

The Improvisation Of Structured Keyboard Accompaniments For The Ballet Class, Simon Frosi Jan 2011

The Improvisation Of Structured Keyboard Accompaniments For The Ballet Class, Simon Frosi

Theses : Honours

This dissertation explores the question of how a pianist can learn to improvise accompaniments for a ballet class. It aims to examine the background knowledge required in order to embark upon such a task and to provide a theoretical tool kit for pianists to use in improvising. Additionally, this dissertation makes a detailed case study of notated improvisations by Michael Brett, an expert exponent of this genre. A thematic catalogue is provided of Brett’s improvisations for a forthcoming publication, examining accompaniment figurations and rhythmic structures. A more detailed harmonic and phrase analysis is then made of three complete pieces, examining …

Innovation And Tradition In Lisan Wang’S Piano Suite Other Hill, Rongjie Xu Dec 2010

Innovation And Tradition In Lisan Wang’S Piano Suite Other Hill, Rongjie Xu

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Lisan Wang is one of the most celebrated musical figures in China. His five-movement piano suite Other Hill (1980) is the composer’s response to the “New Wave”, a compositional trend generated in China after the 1977 Cultural Revolution. Gaining fame as a piano composition for showing the application of multiculturalism and syncretism to music, Other Hill is regarded as a prime example of cross-cultural piano composition in China. Wang challenges Chinese traditional piano composition with different artistic media—philosophy, calligraphy, poems, and various folk elements in Other Hill. This document proposes an interdisciplinary study of Lisan Wang’s musical fusion of …
