Hymns, whether composed for religious contexts or as expressions of spiritual reflection, are historically revered for their redemptive nature. For generations, Black Hymnody has cried out for Christological interventions to end shambolic and systemic oppression against Black people. The vicious murder of George Perry Floyd, Jr. on May 25, 2020 reverberated and initiated, as a catalyst, an overdue global awakening that sparked a catalytic moment for conversations too long deferred. The rhythmic feature of odd meters is one of the most important characteristics of contemporary jazz music. However, odd meters are not often used in the saxophone and orchestra repertoire. Therefore, in this study, I aimed to write an original suite Sounds of Nature for saxophone and a large ensemble that incorporated aspects of jazz, classical, and improvisation with odd meters and changing meters. The dominance of male composers throughout time has created a barrier that prevents female composers from being represented in the music community. Female composers possess great creativity and virtuosity in their compositions, yet gender bias impacts their representation in music repertoire, specifically flute repertoire (Fairouz, 2017). It has been long established that music has the potential to influence a listener’s emotions. Likewise, visual stimulation can influence our emotions. Horror movies rely heavily on the combination of these two systems working together to create tension and fear. This essay will analyze the use of sound, music, and silence in Japanese horror films as compared to their American remakes. I will explore the instrumentation and compositional methods through the lens of traditional Japanese kabuki theatre conventions as well as classical American film scoring to compare my perceived scariness of each film’s most stressful scenes.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is a 2016 strategy video game in which the player leads a historical civilization from 4000 BC to the present. The Civilization series is the subject of much scholarly writing, especially its representation of history and non- Western cultures. My work builds on Karen Cook’s research (2014) on the technological progress and American hegemonic identity signaled by Civilization IV’s soundtrack. The Cyberinet is a new Augmented instrument designed to easily and intuitively provide a method of computer-enhanced performance to the Clarinetist to allow for greater control and expressiveness in a performance. A performer utilizing the Cyberinet is able to seamlessly switch between a traditional performance setting and an augmented one. Towards this, the Cyberinet is a hardware replacement for a portion of a Clarinet containing a variety of sensors embedded within the unit.
