This research paper explores how to develop collaborative skills in piano students at the college level. It offers a brief history of collaborative study and performance, describes the specifics of working with singers and instrumentalists in duo, chamber and large ensemble repertoire, and includes musical examples and selected resources. This paper is intended to enrich the activities of teachers and collaborative pianists through the description and application of specific skills and to provide pathways for effective professional collaborations.

Adventures In Flute Playing: A Literature Survey And Anticipated Beginning Flute Method, Sammy Holloman

This Literature Survey will investigate 10 method books used by beginning flute students, aged 6-13, in the United States. In this survey, books will be analyzed to identify which musical concepts are covered and their overall methodical approach. Comprehensive graphs are offered in the Appendix to provide readers brief contextual information on the books analyzed.

The results from this survey have influenced the creation of my beginning flute method, Adventures in Flute Playing, which incorporates exercises that are less commonly found in the method books being used today. Adventures in Flute Playing will consist of a series of online videos …

Worship of the goddess Padmāvatī emerged more than a thousand years ago. This article explores three songs about her in Gujarati by Paṇḍit Vīrvijayajī (1773-1852). By analyzing the style and form of his work, one learns a great deal about devotional liturgies that commemorate goddess Padmāvatī’s protection of the Jina Pārśvanātha and, in turn, his protection of her.

Women’S Voices From History: Gond Rani Durgawati And Rani Lakshmibhai, Nandini Sengupta, Moupia Basu

Two strong women are compared and contrasted in this article. Gond Rani Durgawati (1524-1564) led a resistance movement in Jabalpur against the Mughal rule of Akbar. Rani Lakshmibai (1828-1858) organized the people of Jhansi against Sir Hugh Rose, an officer defending the interests of the British East India Company. Both women continue to be remembered for their bravery and their loyalty to the people they ruled.

Mai Bhago (1670-1720), also known as Bhag Kaur, distinguished herself on the battlefield to defend the Sikh faith. Amrita Devi Bishnoi (d. 1730) is said to have sacrificed her life with 362 others to protect the Khejari trees in the Rajasthan desert. Both women continue to inspire social justice and ecological activism.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) sought to alleviate poverty and empower women. His commitment to nonviolence and the economic ideal of “small is beautiful” continue to inspire grassroots movements around the globe. This article discusses the Chipko movement of northern India, the protection of rain forests in Kerala’s Silent Valley, the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), and Medha Patkar’s valiant though ultimately futile attempt to save the Narmada River from a massive government damming project. The ongoing legacy of these movements can be found in AWAG, the Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group and Women’s Shanti Sena (Peace Force).

Indigenous Stitch-Arts Of India: Tradition And Revival In A Global Age, Punam Madhok

Stitch art allows for the creative expression and economic support of countless women throughout India. This article examines four notable styles: chikankari, flora and fauna stitched in white thread on fine white cotton, rabari, the stitching of mirrors into colorful cloth, phulkari, resplendent flowery motifs sewn into shawls in Punjab, and kantha, Bengali patch work yielding quilts and seating mats. In addition to describing each technique, this article discusses how women have been economically empowered through this art by such organizations as Self-Help Enterprise (SHE) in Kolkata and Adithi, a women’s cooperative, in Bihar.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent social isolation measures had a profound impact on communities worldwide. In regional and remote Western Australia, the use of online platforms has become increasingly important for maintaining social and emotional well-being. This article examines the role of ‘The Isolation Tour 2020’ Facebook page in providing a lifeline for its mostly Aboriginal audience to stay connected with culture, Country, and one another during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown in Western Australia. The authors conducted an in-depth interview with one of the administrators of the page and supplemented this with a thematic analysis of publicly available Facebook data. …

This thesis examines the lyrics of the three founding Riot Grrrl bands: Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, and Heavens to Betsy. I explore how Riot Grrrl bands politicize girlhood to undermine patriarchal authority and empower girls to redefine feminism for themselves. I provide the historical context for Riot Grrrl as a political movement and its cultural impact in the 1990s. In my analysis I connect the lyrics to feminist discourse to demonstrate how Riot Grrrl provided women and girls a platform to discuss feminism and patriarchal oppression. วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษามูลบทของการบรรเลงซออู้เพลงกราวในสำหรับการเดี่ยวและการแสดงโขนตอนขับพิเภก เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการบรรเลงซออู้เพลงกราวในสำหรับการเดี่ยวและการแสดงโขน ตอนขับพิเภก ของครูสุริยะ ชิตท้วม โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การบรรเลงเดี่ยวเพลงกราวในเกิดขึ้นในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้น ครูปี่พาทย์ประดิษฐ์ทางเดี่ยวเพลงกราวในขึ้นบรรเลงในอัตราจังหวะสามชั้น ภายหลังจึงเกิดเดี่ยวกราวในสำหรับเครื่องสาย ทางเดี่ยวซออู้เพลงกราวในของครูสุริยะ ชิตท้วมเป็นทางของหลวงไพเราะเสียงซอ (อุ่น ดูรยะชีวิน) ที่ได้ถ่ายทอดให้แก่ครูวรยศ ศุขสายชลและครูธีระ ภู่มณีตามลำดับ กลวิธีการบรรเลงซออู้เดี่ยวกราวใน พบว่า ใช้กลุ่มเสียงปัญจมูลทั้งหมด 4 กลุ่มเสียง ได้แก่ ทางนอก ทางใน ทางกลางแหบ และทางชวา มีการบรรเลงลูกโยนเสียงทั้งหมด 6 เสียงในการประดิษฐ์ลูกโยน พบการใช้กลวิธีพิเศษจำนวน 14 กลวิธี ส่วนการบรรเลงเดี่ยวซออู้เพลงกราวในสำหรับการแสดงโขนเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ ตอนขับพิเภก ของครูสุริยะ ชิตท้วม ที่ได้รับการถ่ายทอดมาจากครูธีระ ภู่มณี บรรเลงเพียงโยนเดียว เสียงโด โดยใช้วิธีการโอด การครวญ และบรรเลงโดยไม่มีเครื่องกำกับจังหวะ จนกระทั่งพิเภกได้พบกับทหารของพระราม จากนั้นจึงจะบรรเลงด้วยทางเก็บและสิ้นสุดการบรรเลงเพลงกราวในเมื่อตัวลิงรำป้องหน้า พบการใช้กลวิธีที่ใช้จำนวน 12 กลวิธี

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องการบรรเลงซอด้วงในวงเครื่องสายปี่ชวาของครูจีรพล เพชรสม มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการบรรเลงและกลอนซอด้วงในวงเครื่องสายปี่ชวาของครูจีรพล เพชรสม ผลการศึกษาพบว่าซอด้วงเป็นเครื่องดนตรีที่มีความสำคัญต่อวงเครื่องสายปี่ชวาในบทบาทของผู้นำ การบรรเลงซอด้วงในวงเครื่องสายปี่ชวาผู้บรรเลงต้องมีความเข้าใจถึงบทบาทเครื่องดนตรีและการเลือกใช้สำนวนที่เหมาะสมเพื่อเป็นหลักให้กับวง ผู้บรรเลงต้องมีความแม่นยำในทำนองหลักและเชี่ยวชาญเรื่องการเปลี่ยนบันไดเสียงอย่างฉับพลันเพื่อตอบสนองต่อแนวการบรรเลงของวงที่มีความกระชับรวดเร็ว วิธีการบรรเลงซอด้วงตามแบบแผนของครูจีรพล เพชรสม ได้แก่ การศึกษาทำนองหลัก การฝึกเปลี่ยนเสียงเพื่อการบรรเลงวงเครื่องสายปี่ชวา การแปรทำนอง และการใช้กลวิธีพิเศษ ซึ่งผู้บรรเลงสามารถบรรเลงซอด้วงได้ทั้งแบบเลื่อนระดับรัดอกและไม่เลื่อนระดับรัดอก ทั้งนี้พบลักษณะการดำเนินทำนองซอด้วงทั้งหมด 4 ลักษณะ ได้แก่ กลอนโครงสร้างตามทำนองหลัก กลอนเรียงเสียง กลอนย้ำเสียง และกลอนไต่เสียง ลักษณะดังกล่าวเป็นการดำเนินซอด้วงของครูจีรพล เพชรสม ที่มีความเรียบง่ายไม่ซับซ้อนเพื่อเป็นหลักให้กับวงเครื่องสายปี่ชวา รวมถึงสนับสนุนปี่ชวาระหว่างที่เป่าโหยผ่านการเก็บแทรกแซงและตกแต่งด้วยกลวิธีพิเศษซึ่งประกอบด้วย การพรมปิด การพรมเปิด การพรมจาก และการสะบัดนิ้ว

การแสดงขับร้องเดี่ยวระดับมหาบัณฑิตโดย อิสรพงศ์ ดอกยอ มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อนำเสนอและถ่ายทอดบทเพลงร้องศิลป์ บทเพลงพื้นบ้าน และบทเพลงลูกทุ่งไทยต่อสาธารณชน โดยการแสดงขับร้องเดี่ยวในครั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยได้คัดเลือกบทเพลงรวมทั้งสิ้น 11 เพลง แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ประเภทดังนี้ 1) บทเพลงร้องศิลป์ จำนวน 2 เพลง 2) บทเพลงพื้นบ้านภาษาอังกฤษ จำนวน 3 เพลง และ 3) บทเพลงลูกทุ่งไทยในหลายยุคที่มีความเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของไทยอย่างชัดเจน จำนวน 6 เพลง ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษาค้นคว้าเกี่ยวกับประวัติความเป็นมาและได้วิเคราะห์บทเพลง อย่างละเอียด เพื่อนำมาตีความหมายและนำไปสู่การศึกษาและสังเคราะห์เป็นวิธีการขับร้อง ที่เหมาะสมกับบทเพลงในแต่ละประเภทโดยมุ่งประเด็นไปที่การศึกษาเกี่ยวกับเทคนิคการขับร้อง ในบทเพลงร้องศิลป์และบทเพลงพื้นบ้านภาษาอังกฤษ เพื่อเป็นแนวทางในการต่อยอดและประยุกต์ กับการขับร้องบทเพลงลูกทุ่งไทยในรูปแบบการนำเสนอที่มีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัวและเหมาะสม กับการจัดแสดงในยุคปัจจุบัน

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องกลวิธีในการบรรเลงซออู้ในการแสดงหุ่นกระบอก เรื่องขุนช้างขุนแผน ตอนนางวันทองห้ามทัพ ของคณะหุ่นกระบอกเพาะช่าง มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประวัติความเป็นมาและมูลบทที่เกี่ยวข้องกับคณะหุ่นกระบอกเพาะช่าง เพื่อศึกษาหลักและกลวิธีการบรรเลงและทำนองซออู้ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การแสดงหุ่นกระบอกเกิดขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 โดยได้รับความนิยมเรื่อยมาจนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ.2541 เกิดคณะหุ่นกระบอกเพาะช่างขึ้น ริเริ่มโดย ครูสุขสันต์ พ่วงกลัด ซึ่ง ครูชื้น สกุลแก้ว เป็นผู้ถ่ายทอดองค์ความรู้ก่อให้เกิดอัตลักษณ์ที่ชัดเจนทั้งเรื่องของดนตรีประกอบการแสดงที่มีซออู้บรรเลงร่วมกับวงปี่พาทย์จึงเกิดหลักการบรรเลง คือ 1) เทียบเสียงซออู้ให้เสียงสูงกว่าปี่พาทย์ 1 เสียง เพื่อสะดวกต่อการสีทำนองหุ่นกระบอก 2) สีลดเสียง 1 เสียงในเพลงที่บรรเลงร่วมกับวงปี่พาทย์ พบกลวิธีบรรเลงซออู้ทั้งหมด 11 กลวิธี ได้แก่ พรมปิด พรมเปิด การเกลื่อน สะบัด สะบัดเสียงเดียว ครั่น กระทบเสียง สีนิ้วชิด การประ การสะบัดเน้นเสียงแรกและการสียักเยื้อง ทำนองซออู้ที่ใช้กับการแสดงหุ่นจำแนกได้ 4 ประเภท ได้แก่ ทำนองหุ่นกระบอก ทำนองในเพลงหน้าพาทย์ ทำนองเพลงเกร็ด และทำนองเพลงร้องสองชั้น

Music Reminiscence In Music Therapy For Elderly Population: A Scoping Review Of The Literature, Jugyodsapatn Kwankeeree

The purpose of this scoping review was to summarize the specific music interventions and clinical goals utilized in music-based reminiscence for elderly population with and without neurocognitive disorders. Fourteen articles meeting the inclusion criteria were selected in this review. The results showed music-based reminiscence interventions were conducted by both music therapists and non-music therapists. Interventions implemented by music therapists showed a greater diversity based on numerous goal domains compared to non-music therapists. Music therapists assess various domains of health comprehensively, while other professionals mostly used music-based reminiscence intervention to address mainly the cognitive domain. Transition after graduation poses significant psychosocial challenges for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), often exacerbated by the abrupt cessation of services and support programs. A potential intervention to address their needs is community music projects. This scoping review aims to summarize current practices, identify research gaps, and offer insights for music therapists, community leaders, and care providers by reviewing relevant literature on community music projects for adolescents and young adults with ASD. Walking Carefully Towards Bridging The Gap: Exploring Australian Music Educator Voices About Teaching Indigenous Music, Dawn Joseph, Bradley Merrick

Facilitating an inclusive pedagogy to close the gap that exists within the teaching of Indigenous Knowledge in Australia is a tall order for many teachers. This paper draws on responses to a national study and explores how music educators include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music and culture into their practice. An online survey (December 2022-February 2023, N=109) informed the findings. Using thematic analysis, two themes (teaching challenges and opportunities, and bridging the gap) are discussed and key recommendations offered. Findings suggest that walking carefully towards bridging the gap is an opportunity for educational change in contemporary Australian classrooms.

Musicians have engaged in visual self-representation at least since the Renaissance and have continued the tradition to modern times with contemporary practices including selfies and generative technology and AI art. The practitioners include so-called classical composers (Schoenberg is a well-known case) and performers (Caruso, for instance), but also pop singers and musicians (Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith, among others). The media used varies from oil on canvas to drawings on paper, from traditional photography to digital media. When Harald Bode nominally invented the modular synthesiser in 1960, it was not yet clear whether it was a musical instrument or a less-defined form of studio-sited audio technology (Subotnik 1970). Much of the technology, from the interface design to the specific parts, was shared with nonmusical test and measurement equipment. Music serves as a reflection of culture and conveys various emotional and intellectual states, such as a nation's perspective, social attitudes, and historical background. However, the Iranian revolution in 1979 led to the ban of music by the new regime, limiting the output and audience for Iranian music. In addition, the emergence of Western music accessibility through technology posed challenges for traditional Persian music, and the government's restrictions on music further compounded the problem.
