The purpose of this research is to help determine practice room design guidelines to increase music students’ practice duration and quality in higher education. The Foy Building music practice rooms on the Statesboro campus of Georgia Southern University are being used as the basis for this research, as these spaces are used daily by music students to practice their instruments. The study population for this research was music majors and minors, as these individuals are the main users of the practice room spaces. Colors Of Love: A Story Ballet, Spencer Roberts

Music Theses and Dissertations

Colors of Love is a two-act ballet scored for chamber orchestra. The work is influenced by both jazz and classical musical styles, representing two distinct sound worlds that work together to create the whole. The instrumentation and the melodic content of the score reflects the cultural, racial, emotional, and physical turmoil that plagues society; the goal of this thesis is to bring these issues to light through the juxtaposition of jazz and classical music.

For much of the duration of my residency last year as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar to the United Kingdom, I was ensconced in Aldeburgh, a town two hours northeast of London on the Suffolk coast. The medieval fishing village is the home of the Britten Pears Arts Archive (BPAA), the largest archive dedicated to a single composer in the world. Since her introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2010 film Iron Man 2, Natasha Romanoff has not had a strong musical identity. The 2021 film Black Widow changes this trend as Natasha assumes the role of the titular character rather than that of a supporting character. Black Widow’s soundtrack allows the absurd superhero film to tell a personal story of familial bonds, struggles with individual identity, and childhood trauma through motivic relationships and the changes in various iterations of themes and motifs as they appear in the film.

As a songwriter, I love connecting my poetry to songs. There are so many similarities between life and music, and that is just beautiful to me. I wrote this poem about very real experiences I have had, about the idea of sugarcoating reality for the sake of what life really looks like under the surface. In this study, I examined how kindergarten students and a music teacher engaged in social music interactions and displayed music characteristics during harmonic improvisation activities. The purpose of this project is to identify how elementary general music curriculum can address the negative impacts of the sense of isolation felt by elementary music students because of COVID-19. When designed appropriately, components of the elementary music curriculum can help recover the sense of belonging lost during the implementation of forced remote and hybrid learning platforms. With the use of large-group surveys, this qualitative research study investigates the sense of isolation felt by elementary general music students after remote school attendance, hybrid school attendance, and non-attendance. Applying concepts of embodied cognition positively impacts pedagogy in the theory and aural skills classrooms. This thesis defines a holistic view of the student and identifies how classroom instruction from that perspective can benefit student learning as well as overall well-being. The opening chapters provide a brief scientific background and connect concepts of embodied cognition with specific music theory and aural skills examples from an interview. A select survey of the music theory pedagogy literature also illustrates principles of embodied cognition. Sounds Of Space: Utilising The Sonic Language Of Space Music In Music Production, Chris Lambert

Research examining the relationship between popular music and outer space has largely focused on lyrical themes, visual aesthetics, cultural meanings, and science-fiction film soundtracks. Comparatively little attention has been paid to the sonic devices through which popular music represents the cosmic and extra-terrestrial. This study addresses that gap by identifying and analysing the sonic language of space music across a broad range of popular music traditions from the 1950s to the present. Using thematic analysis of musical texts and a practice-led research methodology, the project examines recurring sonic signifiers associated with outer space, sciencefiction futurism, and imagined extra-terrestrial environments. The Saxophone In Classical And Popular Music (Honors), Dylan Propheter

Papers

The Saxophone instrument family has achieved widespread success and recognition in the context of jazz and popular music, but has a more complex role in the western classical music tradition. Instrument maker Adolph Sax invented the Saxophone in the 1840’s while living in Paris. Thanks to Sax’s connections to prominent figures in 19th century France, the instrument family saw initial success despite severe pushback from competing instrument makers and composers. Though it never became a standard instrument in the orchestra, it did have material written for it, including some notable solo pieces. That success did not continue, however, and by …

Music Therapy In Adult Medical Settings: Recommendations And Advocacy For Sustainable Programs, Margaret Moore

This thesis research provides advocacy, strategies, and recommendations for sustainable music therapy program structures in adult medical settings. A review of the related literature justifies the need for and benefits of music therapy programs in adult medical settings. Recommendations for establishing and growing a music therapy program in these settings are based on semi-structured interviews conducted with three music therapists who have successfully implemented cost-effective and sustainable programs. Important considerations identified for program development include what to incorporate in a development pitch, the workload and well-being of the music therapist, and staff perceptions and relationship to the music therapy program.
