Vocal-only student ensembles who cover contemporary popular music at most U.S. high schools and universities, known as a cappella groups, mold students as musical listeners and performers. Though predominantly composed of liberal and progressive people who value diversity and inclusion, a cappella communities perpetuate racialized inequities of sound and representation. I analyze how race, particularly whiteness, shapes the intersecting communities of scholastic a cappella through ideologies of sound (i.e. singing and arranging styles), social structures (i.e. audition processes, competition policies, and judging rubrics), and discourses (how a range of a cappella practitioners discuss, or not, social categories such as race …

In general, it is material that covers a span of about fifty years from the 1880s to the 1930s, though the present document concentrates on the Omaha expositions of 1898 and 1899. This paper discusses the audiences of the Theater, the location, architecture and mechanics. Although much has changed within theaters since the 18th century, some things still remain the same.

There is a variety of research published about the use of music therapy interventions and their outcomes for the pediatric hematology-oncology and outpatient groups, however the research is not combined to put together a description of the most effective interventions utilized in one place. This scoping review addressed the questions of what music therapy interventions are used in the pediatric hematology/oncology and outpatient settings, and what the outcomes of music therapy were respectively. The Enlightenment was a time of philosophy, critical thinking, and brotherhood. Society at the time felt it was possible to find true meaning and connections with the world around them. Ideas were spread through newspapers, pamphlets, and social gatherings such as lodges. This spread of ideas reached Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and affected his opera, Die Zauberflöte. Themes of the Enlightenment are found in the characterizations of Tamino, Papageno, Pamina, the Queen, and Sarastro. This essay describes characterizations and analyzes how themes of Enlightenment appear in the opera.

Upon analysis of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, we are able to discern the compositional techniques throughout which reflect the plot and inner motives of each character. We also analyze Masonic ideas hidden in the subtext of the opera and how they are explored through the use of reinterpretation of past material, affekt, and text painting.

Die Zauberflöte was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with the libretto written by Emanuel Schikaneder. In this essay, we aim to present our findings regarding Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in relation to the theater culture found in the 18th century. Because of the lack of writing on the production of Die Zauberflöte we aimed our research towards Schikaneder and the general layout of the theater surrounding the time Die Zauberflöte premiered. Using cross referencing and sources from the 18th century, we have put together a general synopsis of how Die Zauberflöte was likely promoted and produced. All of this information comes …

The eighteenth century philosophy regarding discrimination based on gender and race do not align with the philosophy of the modern era. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, written in 1791, is full of racist and misogynist remarks which are woven carefully into the music and plot of the opera. Racism is evident through the character of Monostatos and the claims that his status as a Moor make him less valuable as a human being. Additionally, the character Sarastro exemplifies a rational and powerful male while the Queen of the Night, while powerful in her own right, is the villain: an unruly, emotional woman. …

This thesis investigates the intersections between theology, music therapy, and psychotherapy when creating a music composition that honors a hospice patient’s walk of faith. A pioneer organization inspiring this thesis is Swan Songs in Austin, Texas, where musical moments are created for the patient and family. However, its model is primarily based on collating previously composed pieces for recitals without a personalized honoring of the patient’s witness of faith. In the market for tertiary level commercial music education, educators find themselves pulled between students' commercial stylistic interests and the seemingly incommensurable genres better suited to exploring advanced theoretical concepts and vocabulary. This divide can lead to a motivational deficiency in a student that, in turn, can hinder their development and render their collegiate experience less worth the expense. In the interest of combating this potential motivational deficiency, this recording project and accompanying paper explores and demonstrates the process of modernizing and recontextualizing material found in these less commercially mainstream genres. Musicality, Misophonia Sensitivity, And Responsiveness To Misophonia Videos, Alexis Rice, Jennifer Hsu, Kaela Omengan, Sivan Barashy

Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters

Misophonia sensitivity as measured by the A-MISO-S predicts emotional responses to misophonia trigger videos, but musical sophistication (Gold MSI scores) did not. A measure of real-time responses to videos can capture a meaningful aspect of misophonic experience in the general population. Future research should investigate whether more direct measures of musicality such as perceptual tasks will show a relationship between musicality and misophonic reactions.
