Report On The Jbs-Usa Conference, October 2002 On The Theme Jussi Bjorling In New York City, 1919-1959

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

We came to Manhattan from Brazil, Chile. Cuba, Israel, Italy, Sweden, the U.K.- and The U.S., from Massachusetts to California, from Minnesota to Texas. Not to mention NY, N.J, CT, PA etc., altogether over 150 strong. We gathered at the New Yorker Hotel, on 8th Avenue at 34th Street, for 12 major programs and a half-dozen smaller events starting on Thursday, October 24. and ending at noon on Sunday, October 27. Here's a brief summary of what happened:

As Dan and Gail Shea prepared for their pre-holiday drive from Wisconsin to California, it occurred to Dan that Kansas City is something of a hotbed of true Jussicologists- maybe we could all get together? So Dan called Pat Darrow and emailed Terry Williams and Ed Walter, and then Terry called Don Quinn and local opera broadcaster Jim Seaver and singers Gustavo and Sarah Halley. Everyone wanted to meet, including some spouses, so a room for 12 was arranged at a local restaurant and a talk-fest broke out. We first heard Jussi Bjorling in the autumn of 1937, but we had certainly heard of him before that. His first gramophone recordings, arias from Tosca, La fanciulla del West, La boheme, Aida and Rigoletto, had already been issued, and the advance publicity had spoken of "a new Caruso", a claim which led the great English critic, Ernest Newman, to comment: "Here lies as usual a press-agent". (This is said to be the wording of a famous inscription on a gravestone somewhere in the U.S.A.)

It would not be overstating the case to say that Jussi Bjorling was extremely popular with artists of the spoken theatre too. He was always very eager to team all about the problems of the theatre and of he actor's art, and when he met actors he never failed to ask us about our experiences in the theatre. He wanted to know as much as possible about the stage and its techniques.

There were all too few occasions on which we at the Royal Theatre enjoyed the good fortune of being able to persuade Jussi Bjorling to sing on our stage. In return, though, these guest appearances become memorable events in our theatre's little history. To have had the pleasure of being Jussi's regular accompanist over many years is what one can truly call a journey on wings of song. Today's book, Until the wing breaks-a book about Jussi Bjorling, is no ordinary biography. Yrsa Stenius makes an admirable attempt to map what happens with the man Jussi Bjorling during his short life. In the book one is tossed between hope and despair, and one puts it aside with a lump in the throat- the price of art can be terribly high, the author demonstrates.

Visions of Research in Music Education

This study addresses how high school band directors operationalize their values for music education in their band program s. High school band directors described that their values developed from a variety of influences, namely their educator identity, and the experience of their own participation in high school and collegiate music. I employed a qualitative methodology to determine emergent themes and compare participant responses and band program curricula. Findings from this study indicate these values inform many band directors’ decisions regarding high school band curricula, which they operationalize in curricular outcomes, and through a variety of artistic and educational opportunities for …
