When you've come a long way to attend a JBS conference, what else do you do after the conference? For some of our members the answer turned out to be: Join the JBS-organized post conference excursion to Santa Fe for more opera. Fifteen of us enjoyed staying together at the Hotel St Francis, located close to the central city Plaza, and attended two performances: Verdi's Falstaff on July 4 and Lucia di Lammermoor on July 6. The Smithsonian Presents Bertil Bengtsson On Jussi: A Swedish Tenor's American Odyssey, Dan Shea

As Bertil Bengtsson prepared for his two presentations at the JBS Conference at, Gustavus, he received a welcome invitation from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC: Thank, to information provided them by JBS member Bea Bobotek, they knew of his availability to speak on Jussi and his career: it would be an attractive program for their continuing lecture series. Bertil worked out some agreements between the Smithsonian and the Embassy of Sweden and accepted. By the time June 26 arrived, word had gone out in the monthly Smithsonian Associates magazine and a nearly sold-out audience of over 200 would appear …

I was quite gratified with the number of responses as \well as the variety, strength, and good humor of the opinions offered. News From Gustavus And The Minnesota Bjorlings

Recently Anders Bjorling called to give us some news about his and wife Janet's alma mater, Gustavus Adolphus College, located in their hometown of Sr. Peter. Minnesota. You may know that the music department at Gustavus has a beautiful performance space called the Jussi Bjorling Recital Hall with an impressive portrait and bust of Jussi. According to Anders, Gustavus now has installed a large display case in the lobby of Bjorling Hall to hold a permanent exhibit on Jussi's life and career, complete with a sound system and earphones.

Following Jussi Bjorling's first tremendous successes in Vienna and Prague (March 12-19, 1936), he was quickly engaged for a return visit as soon as his responsibilities with the Stockholm Royal Opera's spring season ended. He returned to Czechoslovakia two months later and travelled on to Vienna for performances of Aida, Trovatore, and Boheme all to great acclaim. With his reputation there firmly established, Jussi was invited to return in 1937 for a longer period.

We heard from our friends Des Lockett and Eric Wimbles, of the UK's JB Appreciation Society, that the "CD Masters" radio program on BBC's Radio 3 had designated Jussi as its "Featured Artist" for the week August 18-22. This meant that the program's fine host, Rob Cowan, would be selecting and commenting on several of Jussi's recordings each day to play during the timeslot 10:00-11:30 AM, London time.
