One of this season's most demonstrative Music Hall audiences applauded and shouted its enthusiasm last night for the thrilling voice and artistry of Jussi Bjoerling, Swedish tenor, who is at the crest now of his remarkable vocal prowess. Bjoerling won hands down the acclaim of a large, though not capacity, audience. He gave vivid proof that he is both a song recitalist and a master of the dramatic vocalism of grand opera.

Jb Memorial Tenor Competition In Borlange, Sweden

In our last Information Letter we reported that the JB Memorial Tenor Competition, an international contest, will likely be held in Borlange, Sweden, in the year 2000. As of late August, however, planning appeared to be temporarily on hold pending the outcome of Sweden's national elections. By the time you receive this, it is hoped that plans for the competition will be moving forward.

D wing my recent trip to the JB Museum in Borlange, I was privileged to spend a few minutes discussing the upcoming documentary film "The Original Three Tenors" (JB, Caruso, and Gigli) with Mr. Richard Fawks, who was directing the film crew. The crew had gathered at the Museum for coffee prior to spending the day shooting background material in the Museum and in Borlange, Jussi's birthplace.

En Minnesbok And Jussi Bjorling Saga Translated

En Minnesbok ("a memorial book") is a book of reminiscences about JB. Written shortly after Jussi's death, En Minnesbok reflects much of the shock and sorrow felt by those who loved and worked with Jussi. The material was collected by Bertil Hagman and published in 1960 by Albert Bonniers in Sweden. Unfortunately, the book has been out of print for some time. En Minnesbok contains Haginan's short biography of JB and some thirty-nine personal memories of various lengths by Jussi's associates, friends, and fellow performers such as J. Forsell, N. Grevillius, H. Schymberg, B. Nilsson, E. Soderstrom, K. Meyer, J. …

Coming From Bertil Bengtsson Later This Year

As noted in our last letter, Bertil Bengtsson- a member of the JBS-USA Advisory Board- is currently translating into English an article about Jussi's phenomenal 1934-1935 season. This translation will be available in late November/December 1998 and will be published in a future edition of the JBS-USA newsletter. Many thanks to Bertil for this effort!

Vai New Orleans' Un Ballo Released

Video Arts International is distributing the April 1950 New Orleans Un Ballo in Maschera (2 CD set). This performance includes Suzy Morris as Amelia, Marko Rothmuller as Renato, Martha Larrimore as Ulrica, Audrey Schuh as Oscar, and Norman Treigle as Samuel. Walter Herbert conducts.

Jussi Inspired Marriage Proposal, Terry Zapotocky

From reader Terry Zapotocky of Tucson, Arizona.... "Jussi has been my favorite opera singer since 1960 when I first heard a recording of him and fell in love simultaneously with opera and his voice. I also might not be in existence if it weren't for him, as my dad proposed marriage to my mother at a Jussi Bjorling concert!"

In The Spotlight: Walter Rudolph, Walter Rudolph

This month we are pleased to tum our spotlight on Walter Rudolph, a member of the Advisory Board of JBS-USA and the general manager of KBYU-FM at Brigham Young University. Mr. Rudolph is well known as a producer of classical music programming for public radio.

Kidos to Cantor Don Goldberg for an excellent lecture on August 20th at the Jussi Bjorling Museum in Borlange, Sweden! Your editor was privileged to be among the audience of almost 30 people, mostly Swedes some of whom came from as far away as Stockholm. This was an excellent tum out considering that the lecture was in English. Don focused on Jussi's career, both as a young boy and as an adult, in America. A lively 30 minute question and answer period followed the lecture. As previously noted, a summary of "Jussi In America" will appear in our next issue.

Giorgio Tozzi Joins Jbs-Usa As An Honorary Advisor!

During our recent vacation in Sweden, my husband and I were able to spend five days in Borlange. I can tell you unequivocally that the Jussi Bjorling Museum is heaven for the dedicated Jussicologist! Unfortunately, space in this issue doesn't permit a comprehensive story on the Museum and the marvelous treasures it contains or a review of Don Goldberg's August 20th lecture there on "Jussi In America", but look for both articles in our next issue.
