Musical Borrowings, Copyright, And The Canard Of “Cultural Appropriation", Peter L. Manuel

Publications and Research

This essay reviews the basic contours of the cultural appropriation controversies as they have been waged in reference to music in both academic and vernacular circles. It discusses some of the debates that have involved white performers’ musical borrowings from African-American culture, and also musical flows outside the Euro-American mainstream. It explores relations of these ethical polemics to notions of copyright and argues that these can provide a moral guide to the propriety of many cultural interactions. It further critiques the terminological and conceptual distortions and obfuscations that have tended to plague discussions, both on scholarly and popular levels. These …

This document is a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the Master of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theatre. It is a detailed account of author Yu Miao’s artistic process in creating the role of Crissy in the Minnesota State University, Mankato’s production of Hair in the Fall of 2020. The thesis follows the actor’s process beginning with the early production analysis in chapter one. This writing assignment begins a semester-long exploration addressing the question “What Is Jazz?” Being introduced by film to two New Orleans jazz musicians, George “Kid Sheik” Colar (1908-1996) and Emanuel “Manny” Sayles (1907-1986), students will get a firsthand perspective of the various levels of commitment to the music these two individuals maintained as working musicians. They dedicated themselves professionally, personally, emotionally, and spiritually. They took inspiration from their life experiences. The history of opera constantly swings from emphasis on drama to that of music. In developing opera based on their interpretation of Greek drama, the Florentine Camarata stressed the dramatic element. The idea that words must have dramatic purpose and clearly understood were impulses moving music away from the polyphony of the late Renaissance to the monodic writing of the early Baroque. During the subsequent century the theatrical and virtuosic elements were emphasized at the expense of their dramatic relevance. . With Gluck’s reform operas the focus once more shifts to the dramatic.

Historical Performance Practices In Organ Works Before 1750 In Liège, Tyler Andre Zimmerman

The organ solo works from Liège before 1750 are neglected today, but such works are fascinating from a historical performances perspective, especially given their fusion of Dutch, French, and Italian styles. This thesis uncovers historical evidence that supports performance practice decisions in these works. Four collections of Liégeois organ solo pieces are analyzed, including the Liber Fratrum Cruciferorum Leodiensium by Gerardus Scronx (1617), the Pièces d’orgue by Lambert Chaumont (1695), the Livre d’orgue by Thomas Babou (1710), and the Pièces de clavesin (harpsichord and organ pieces) by Hubert Renotte (1749).

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง กลวิธีและลีลาการขับร้องเพลงกระบวนทัพในละครพันทางเรื่องราชาธิราชของครูสมชาย ทับพร มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษามูลบทที่เกี่ยวข้องพร้อมทั้งกลวิธีและลีลาในการขับร้องเพลงกระบวนทัพในละครพันทางเรื่องราชาธิราช โดยใช้วิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ในการสัมภาษณ์ข้อมูลจาก ครูสมชาย ทับพร รวมทั้งบุคคลอื่นที่เกี่ยวข้อง แล้วนำข้อมูลที่ได้มาเรียบเรียงในรูปแบบการพรรณาวิเคราะห์ ผู้วิจัยเลือกศึกษาเพลงขับร้องช่วงกระบวนทัพ 3 ตอน จำนวน 42 เพลง ซึ่งผลการศึกษาสามารถสรุปได้ดังนี้ ละครพันทางสามารถจำแนกได้เป็น 3 ยุค ได้แก่ 1. ละครพันทางยุคเจ้าพระยามหินทรศักดิ์ธำรง (เพ็ง เพ็ญกุล) 2. ละครพันทางยุคพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระนราธิปประพันธ์พงศ์ 3. ละครพันทางยุคกรมศิลปากร จากการศึกษาการขับร้องพบว่า ครูสมชาย ทับพร ให้ความสำคัญในการตีความทางด้านอารมณ์ของการขับร้องให้มีความสอดคล้องกับอารมณ์ของตัวละคร ผ่านการใช้กลวิธีพิเศษในการขับร้อง 9 กลวิธี โดยจำแนกออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม ได้แก่ 1. กลุ่มกลวิธีพิเศษเพื่อตกแต่งคำร้อง ได้แก่ การลักจังหวะ การปั้นคำ การม้วนเสียง-ม้วนคำ การผันเสียง และการเน้นเสียง-เน้นคำ 2. กลุ่มกลวิธีพิเศษเพื่อตกแต่งทำนองเอื้อน ได้แก่ การกระทบเสียง การสะบัดเสียง การโปรยเสียง และการโหนเสียง โดยกลวิธีพิเศษที่พบบ่อยที่สุด ได้แก่ การลักจังหวะ การสะบัดเสียง และการม้วนเสียง-ม้วนคำ กลวิธีพิเศษที่สร้างความโดดเด่นในการขับร้อง ได้แก่ การโปรยเสียง การโหนเสียง และการเน้นเสียง-เน้นคำ ในส่วนของลีลาการขับร้อง สามารถจำแนกออกได้เป็นเป็น 3 ประเด็น คือ 1. ลีลาการขับร้องในบทละครช่วงที่แสดงอารมณ์ของตัวละคร ประกอบด้วยลีลาการ ขับร้องที่สอดคล้องกับการใช้กลวิธี และลีลาการขับร้องที่เกิดจากอัตลักษณ์เฉพาะตัวของครูสมชาย ทับพร 2. ลีลาการขับร้องที่เกิดจากการแบ่งผู้ขับร้องตามบทละคร มี 3 ลักษณะ ได้แก่ การขับร้องเดี่ยว การขับร้องหมู่ และการขับร้องต้นบท-ลูกคู่ 3. ลีลาการขับร้องที่เกิดจากความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการรับร้อง ส่งร้อง

Collab-Hub is a networking tool for sharing data across the internet for multimedia collaboration. Utilizing the Max graphical coding environment and its integrated Node.js functionality, Collab-Hub allows for multiple users to send data easily and remotely so they can collaborate with that data in real-time.

In this talk, we discuss the design of the Collab-Hub framework and provide examples of using it to create scalable and reconfigurable interaction layouts between Max patches and web-based instruments/interfaces. Christians in the Southeast Asian country of Burma, also known as Myanmar, make up approximately five percent of the national population. The Christian community of Burma includes both Catholics and Protestants, and the Protestants are divided into many denominations. Baptist Christians are predominant among this group, and they provided most of the ethnographic information upon which this article is based. In the article I argue that twenty-first century Baptists in Burma fulfill both aspects of a “twofold legacy” bequeathed to them by Adoniram Judson, the first Baptist missionary to Burma, and that their fulfillment of this legacy is manifest in …
