Christmas in the Lutheran Tradition is a worship ministry project originally designed to fulfill the desire for a Christmas Cantata with a focus on the Lutheran love of music as part of worship service. The thesis includes discussions about the early origins of the Christmas celebration and Martin Luther’s incorporation of congregational singing as part of worship service. William Caplin’s Formal-Function Theory and James Hepokoski and Warren Darcy’s Sonata Theory were designed to analyze the tendencies of sonata forms written during the eighteenth century, particularly in the works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. During the nineteenth century, this musical structure became altered in significant ways by many composers. Nonetheless, Caplin’s and Hepokoski and Darcy’s theories can still be used to analyze nineteenth-century sonata forms. Tchaikovsky made major changes in the sonata-form structure of his works by modulating to apparently unrelated or distant keys in his expositions. The relationship between the keys becomes clear once you analyze the recapitulation. …

A prominent cornet player and composer, Adderley was highly respected by many of his peers in New York City, Florida, as well as all over Europe. He spent a lot of time during his career performing with and composing for many renowned jazz musicians: Horace Silver, Oscar Pettiford, Johnny Griffin, Yusef Lateef and most notably his older brother, Cannonball Adderley. This thesis focuses on the question of authenticity in old-time music, and the ways in which it is studied in ETSU’s Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music Studies program. In an academic setting, old-time is often studied in more of a historical or anthropological context and less as a specific style of music. The purpose of this study was to examine the introspections of female band directors, and their perceived beliefs about the effect of sex, gender, and race on their own personal career experiences and professional practices. Participants (N=82) were all current members of Women Band Directors International. After contact through the organization’s website, participants were invited to complete an online survey that consisted of 39 multiple choice, Likert-scale based questions. An optional short answer question was included in the survey (totaling 40 questions), to offer participants the opportunity to share information about personal experiences if they felt comfortable. …

Connections between classical music and jazz were observed and detailed, providing an expanded understanding of the cultural underpinnings of Western music. This study featured explanations of concepts found in jazz theory, such as approach tones and ii⁷-V⁷-I⁷ progression, and comparisons of stylistic features of both music. These concepts were then applied to describe features in the music of Frederic Chopin, specifically “Nocturne No. 1,” “Berceuse,” and “Prelude No. 4.” Through cross-cultural analysis, this study aims to provide the reader with information and further appreciation of the elements found in jazz music and to delineate the …

The two late-romantic operas Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák and The Snow Maiden by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov are based on fairy tales, and combine romance, fantasy, and drama. Their plots develop in parallel universes and have astonishing similarities. However, the music and drama develop following different goals. In Rusalka, leitmotifs and dramatic harmonies shape the plot into a tragedy. In The Snow Maiden motives and melodies exist to describe the character rather than lead the story and the drama; the focus is on Russian folk elements, choruses, and people.

This study aims to explore the feasibility and the potential effects of adding music to meditative movement on affect and flow. Fifteen participants were recruited and they were randomly assigned to one of the three groups: (1) Meditative movement only; (2) Recorded music and meditative movement; and (3) Live music and meditative movement. Participants from each group engaged individually in a 45-minute online session, practicing three qigong exercise sets.
