Dr. Wayla Chambo Stephenson is a versatile, committed performer of both new mu-sic for flute and the traditional repertoire. She serves as Associate Artistic Director and flutist with the Norfolk Chamber Consort, and has performed with the Virginia Symphony, Virginia Children’s Chorus, Christopher Newport University Opera, Dallas Festival of Modern Music, Allen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Dallas Wind Symphony, among others. Chambo serves on the National Flute Association’s New Music Advisory Committee and was Program Chair of the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention. Hermeto Pascoal is one of the most prolific composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, having composed thousands of pieces across his career. Despite his immense and eclectic catalogue, the current analytical literature on him is comparatively scant, particularly outside of the composer’s native Brazil. In order to represent the diversity of his music, this dissertation studies a collection of his works entitled the Calendário do Som. This collection was an exercise in daily composition and comprises 366 short pieces written from July 23, 1996 to July 23, 1997. This research examines early live electronic works by Gordon Mumma, David Tudor, and John Cage—three influential American experimental music composers who designed, built, and recontextualized electronics for live performance—and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) aesthetic embodied by their instruments and the compositions written for them. This dissertation serves as a presentation of original research into the earliest composers of live electronic works and the necessary DIY approach used in building independent systems. Previous research on the DIY perspectives in music often touch on the grass-roots nature of contemporary electroacoustic systems but there is not yet research specific to the DIY approach taken …

The is a piece that explores compositional structure and form. The piece is divided into two movements, “Forward” and “Backward” and may be performed in either order. I like to think of it as a Rorschach inkblot – a reflection of an asymmetrical image creating a symmetrical image.

Myroslav Skoryk is one of the most influential Ukrainian composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His works draw extensively on the folk traditions of Ukraine to evoke various aspects of the country’s cultural legacy.

The violin holds a special place in the cultural, societal, and historical heritage of Ukraine. Skoryk’s works for violin draw on both Ukrainian folk traditions as well as classical performance traditions. The intricacies of Skoryk’s folk-inspired classical pieces of music are rooted in the oral traditions of Ukrainian folk music.

I was 14 when I found out I was no good at singing. Coincidentally, at this same age I decided to try my luck at rapping. It was all a bit out of left field—I was trying to make a kind of music I would’ve been reprimanded for even listening to.
