Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis is a nonliturgical concert setting of the evensong canticles, Luke 1:46-55 & Luke 2:29-32, for SATB div. choir, organ, string quintet, and percussion. Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis is approximately 16-18 minutes in duration without break between movements. The text for Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis is from the Book of Common Prayer, according to the use of the Episcopal Church certified as of 2007, with the omission of the doxology. This decision was influenced by nonliturgical concert settings by Gerald Finzi and Arvo Pärt.

Soundboard: Planar Tracking For Instrument Control, Peter O'Sullivan

The Soundboard is the central component of Syrinx, a synthesizer instrument invented by Spencer Topel. A generated audio signal is transduced through the Soundboard, and by manually adjusting the positioning of its top metal plane, the user can manipulate the encased soundwaves before they are transduced back into a signal and output. My task for this project was to add controller functionality to the Soundboard component by implementing control voltages that carry information about its planar tilt, yaw, and altitude. These voltages can be used to modulate various digital parameters and further affect the sonic output of the instrument. Further, …

The JaK’D Modular Drum System (MDS) is a drum module that allows the customer to purchase a base mod­ule with a certain amount of ports and allows the option to purchase add-on modules to give more input ports as needed. With existing drum modules on the market, if one were to run out of input ports, they would have to buy an entirely new module that has room for the new devices. It is clear through the exploration of various one-dimensional definitions that a consensus has not yet been reached that encompasses the exhaustive and eclectic nature of the concept album, nor does it appear that one will develop in the near future. Therefore, I am offering an alternative approach to classify the concept album in a multi-dimensional manner that may solve issues of exclusion. Rather than attempting to provide a lengthy and fallible interpretation of the musical form, I propose that all concept albums be considered as part of a ‘concept album continuum’ that ranges from loose to strict.

The researcher explored existing literature on music performance anxiety (MPA) that addressed the physiological effects of MPA, its causes, and various methods of mitigating its effects. The influence of self-efficacy and cognitive factors, such as the concepts of focus-of-attention and flow, were researched as they relate to MPA. The music culture and pedagogical approach utilized in institutions providing music education may affect the levels of MPA experienced by music students. It is our duty as musicians, conductors, and teachers to continue developing our teaching and musicianship. One of the ways growth can occur is by singing regularly in ensembles outside of teaching. As one balances career and personal life, continuing to sing is a choice each must make. It is through this document that one may see the relevance of pursuing opportunities to sing, as it may inform and elevate one’s teaching and conducting. Each artistic medium adds their own voice or opinion to the story and thus further colors and clutters the stage. This research investigated whether exercise equipment serving as training aids for singers changes aerodynamic and acoustic measures and, if so, whether any of the changes persist or increase with regular training. Nineteen subjects, eleven women and eight men, in their first two years of voice study at the collegiate level and between nineteen and twenty-two years old, participated in the studies. Seven subjects tested an exercise band. Three subjects tested an exercise ball. Two subjects tested a balance ball. Each study asked subjects to participate in three testing sessions that included a baseline, a training aid and a post-training aid …

Each annotation includes information about the composer (birth year and death year, if applicable), length of the piece, publisher, level of difficulty, a preview of the music, and the written annotation. Each marching band defines “culture” as their ensemble’s decisions on marching style, music choice, band size, instrumentation, and performance obligations. This study aims to categorize marching bands by cultural features, test if marching band characteristics are similar across a region, and explore how these trends in band culture relate to other demographic and socioeconomic trends. Research focused on bands in the Midwest and Southeastern United States and was conducted through video observation. Through analysis, it was found that most marching bands surveyed use a corps step, perform music of artistic merit, have between twenty-one and one hundred marchers, perform with …

The technique is particularly helpful for actors and musicians since their trade requires daily strain on specific muscles. The purpose of this project was to learn how to better understand how the body’s muscles work in regards to playing instruments and singing. This research paper explores stambeli, a traditional spiritual music in Tunisia, by understanding its musical and spiritual components then identifying ways it is presented in digital media. Stambeli is shaped by pre-Islamic West African animist beliefs, spiritual healing and trances. The genre arrived in Tunisia when sub-Saharan Africans arrived in the north through slavery, migration or trade from present-day countries like Mauritania, Mali and Chad. Today, it is a geographic and cultural intersection of sub-Saharan, North and West African influences.

Throughout the Bible and much of church history, intergenerational ministry was the common practice. However, in recent decades many local evangelical churches have abandoned the practice of intergenerational ministry and have instead embraced age-segregated ministry models. Reflecting this shift, age-segregated worship ministries within the local evangelical church have become the norm. This qualitative study examined biblical examples and teachings regarding worship and ministry and examined worship and ministry practices from throughout church history. Analysis of the research findings addressed the characteristics of an effective intergenerational worship ministry.
