The Central Washington University Horn Ensemble received an invitation, based on proposal acceptance, to perform at the 2019 Northwest Horn Symposium, held March 29-31, at the University of Montana in Missoula. This symposium, hosted annually by the Northwest Horn Society, a regional professional organization that promotes the (French) horn in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Western Canada, attracted over 120 professional players, university and school teachers, students and amateurs of all ages from throughout the region. Bowling Green State University boasts a well established College of Musical Arts which holds concerts performed by esteemed faculty, prestigious guest artists, and students. The school hosts these events in Kobacker Hall and Bryan Recital Hall which can accommodate up to 800 and 250 audience members, respectively. However, performances in Kobacker hall only fill one- fourth of the 800 seats, on average. Why is this so? This project aims to investigate the factors that influence students’ decisions to attend concerts at the College of Musical Arts (CMA). This dissertation studies the music of the Jesus movement and its role in shaping American evangelical spirituality. I begin by analyzing the emergence of Jesus music in the contexts of the economic systems of evangelicalism and mass media. Next, I examine how anti-rock critics and Jesus music artists differed in their beliefs about the theological functions of music. The second half of the dissertation analyzes how through Jesus music and pop worship Jesus movement participants developed and distributed a new evangelical spirituality based on ‘feeling’ or experience. This performance consisted of a collaborative project between accordionist Dermot Dunne and saxophonist Nick Roth who together devised and performed an original film score for the 1926 silent film the Cohens and the Kellys. The score consisted of original arrangements of existing pieces by classical composers and traditional music from a variety of sources.

The Dark Horse: An Analysis Of The Experiences And Practices Of Female Collegiate Band Directors, Katharine Grace Henderson

Using a multi-case interview process, the experiences and practices of three female collegiate band directors were analyzed for trends and patterns. These directors were found using the Women Band Directors International membership directory and chosen using purposeful criteria. After analyzing the findings, several patterns were uncovered. First, there is an overwhelmingly negative environment towards females at professional conferences. There is also a lack of female role models for female students who might wish to pursue a conducting career. As a result, they might not realize that conducting is even an option for them. This study focused on the perceptions of elementary students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing in a music class. The author was a preservice teacher serving her year-long clinical teaching. The goal of the study was to better understand deaf and hard-of-hearing students’ perceptions of a Kodaly-inspired class, their favorite aspects of music, what they believed would make their musical experience more enjoyable, and what areas of music that they, and their music teacher, believed they could improve. Exploring Intersections Of Queer Artist Identities Through Music: A Community Engagement Project, Derrick Lacasse

Members of the LGBTQ+ or Queer community are likely to experience minority stress throughout their lives (Borgogna et al., 2018). This community engagement project explored the intersections of identity among artists in the queer community to better understand how art can be used to heal from minority stress. An all-queer space was created to allow members of the queer community to feel relief from minority stress and speak without feeling judged. Through art making, sharing, discussions, and singing together members of the queer community were able to build resilience and deepen hope. Findings for this project indexed queer artists’ use …

This report outlines the findings from a study conducted of the income and budgets of college marching bands for the 2017-2018 academic year. The study was conducted with members of the College Band Directors National Association using their Athletic Band listserv. Participants were asked questions about their marching band’s income, expenditures, use of development funds, and their school and band’s demographics. The data is then analyzed to highlight trends within the data, and to generate recommendations for how marching bands can improve their budgets. Study limitations are also discussed.

Musical semiotics is the study of the various ways in which musical structures become meaningful. This thesis is an attempt to create a logical, systematized, transformational theory of musical semiotics that can elucidate the various ways in which music conveys meaning. While the semiotic exploration of music is by no means novel, this thesis presents a unique, highly rigorous, and truly theoretical approach to musical semiotics that differs significantly from previous theories. Flexi Discs: The Audio Format That Time Forgot And Remembered Again, Junior R. Tidal

Flexi discs, also known as phonosheets and Soundsheets, are “flexible” plastic sheets that can be played on turntables. This audio format was used for a wide variety of purposes including promotional materials, giveaways, and inserts into magazines, stemming from their origins in playable chocolate discs in the early 1900s (Parks, 2018). At one point in time it was a $9 million dollar business, with the U.S. government as one of the top users of the technology (Penchansky, 1979). Their disposable nature, weight, ability to print directly on material, and affordable manufacturing made the flexi disc an alternative to vinyl pressings. …

Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 1290. Student collection titled “’Clogging’s Just Clogging’: The Richard McHargue Cloggers and Approaches to Vernacular Percussive Dance Study” in which Sarah McCartt-Jackson conducts an interview with Richard McHargue, a clogging instructor from Richmond, Kentucky. The interview contains McHargue’s early dancing memories, clogging terms, and opinions about the contemporary state of clogging. The collection also contains a partial transcript, fieldnotes, interview questions, content index, photographs, and the recorded audio interview on CD.

Nick Roth's second quintet was commissioned by the Sligo International Chamber Music Festival to be premiered by Dermot Dunne, accordion and the Vogler string quartet. The work draws on many aspects of the muezzin call to prayer in the Islamic faith including the various different modes (or maqaams) used in the call to prayer throughout the day. The work is a synthesis of the ISlamic call to prayer with contemporary composition techniques

Illuminations is a vocal piece for mezzo-soprano and electronics. It incorporates elements of ambient and noise music. A Western Sydney research project investigated the question, “What are the practices of pre-service teachers and experienced teachers of music in secondary schools that successfully engage their students with digital media?” The hypothesis underlying the project was that digital media offers school students opportunities, and has the potential to allow more self-paced, interactive and personalized learning. Storytelling is a way in which humans communicate their lives as narratives and understand the world around them. Storytelling through composing music allows students not only a means of personal expression, but also enhanced literacy skills, social skills, and understandings of basic musical concepts (e.g., Barrett & Stauffer, 2012; Kaschub & Smith, 2009). This thesis contains a digital storybook of fifth grade students’ original songs that documents their processes of turning ideas into final products and examines their thoughts and words about songwriting and identity development. In a 2010 study, Elizabeth Margulis finds that audience members enjoy classical music less when they read information about the piece before they hear it. Her result is surprising because conventional wisdom suggests that such pre-concert information would add to an audience members’ enjoyment of a concert. To gain further perspective, I decided to conduct a similar study on JMU’s campus that differed from Margulis’ in many ways. For example, participants attended a live concert rather than listening to excerpts of music through headphones.
