The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate the paradoxical work of British serialist Elisabeth Lutyens. Musical Englishness in the mid-twentieth century was mainly conceived of as tonal, narrative and folk or folk-inspired. Lutyens was an oddity in the English musical scene as a serialist, but she utilized many of the qualities of traditional Englishness while maintaining a modern, idiomatic sound. Although this combination seems paradoxical, Englishness can be understood in far more inclusive terms than simply tonal, narrative, or folk-like. “Midwestern Portrait” for Chamber Jazz Ensemble and Solo Tenor Saxophone is an original composition consisting of three main movements, an introduction, and two interludes. The piece is written for a full ensemble of 17 musicians – one solo tenor saxophone, four woodwinds, four brass, four strings, and four rhythm section players. The “Introduction,” “Interlude 1,” and “Interlude 2” feature smaller performing forces while the three main movements (“For GK,” “The Tradition,” “The Search) are written for the full ensemble.

Since it is a very difficult thing to tell a story using music, writers must exercise extreme caution in allowing a story to unfold in an effective, economic way. The purpose of this study is to explore what music teachers of refugee and immigrant students in the Western New York area are doing to include this population within their music classrooms. This is a qualitative multiple case study, with the purpose of finding out as much information possible from three participants who teach music to immigrant and refugee students. Western esotericism, or the practice of trying to understand divinity through secret initiatic means, exists in several philosophical strains, which mystics through the ages have formalized into systems of teaching. One aspect that appears in many of the traditions is music. Music is a direct language of the consciousness within esoteric traditions because it does not rely on language to express higher concepts. Just as these societies teach truths mainly through symbolism, they use music, since it lends itself to interpretations beyond the connotation-laden nature of words. Marsch Collection, includes the music of renowned wind band composer, arranger, and transcriber J. Durward Marsch who dedicated his life to music education as well as to producing a large body of works, most of which are transcriptions for wind bands. Shortly after beginning my music studies at Brigham Young University, I began to struggle with overuse injury that made it difficult to play my instrument. Conversations with fellow BYU music majors over the past few years revealed that music related injuries seem to be relatively common. The informal conversations with fellow music majors as well as my personal experience with music related injury prompted me to investigate the prevalence of music related injury at the University level. Sacred Sounds was an ORCA funded research project that resulted in an exhibit that ran from November 10, 2017 to January 3, 2018 in the Harold B. Lee Library. The overall goal was to curate an immersive, multimedia, musical experience that focused on the three Abrahamic religions and explored the ways in which music embodies and interacts with the Divine. I hoped to create, through the lens of music, a compelling experience for visitors to cultivate empathy among local Jewish, Christian, and Islamic communities.

In the world of performing arts, instruments often malfunction, preventing the performer from playing the instrument. This malfunction can be a simple fix that the performer may know how to fix, but more often than not, these damages to the instrument can only be fixed by a technician with sufficient training. My ORCA project was to study, practice, and teach string instrument maintenance and repair. The repairs that I learned were: closing and opening seams;; closing cracks in various parts of the instrument;; bridge and sound post alignment and placement;; neck and fingerboard adjustment;; nut and saddle raising and replacing;; peg alteration and replacement;; cleaning and polishing instruments. Because there is such a need for inexpensive timely repair in an orchestra classroom, it was crucial that I not only learn these basic repairs myself, but assist local orchestra teachers with their repair needs, and teach fellow future teachers.

Johnny Williams (well known in the film world as John Williams) created a masterful record, Rhythm in Motion, in 1961. Though not well received commercially, it is a powerful testament of the creativity that flowed through Hollywood and jazz. I studied two scores from this album, both arrangements of famous tunes: Whatever Lola Wants (Lola Gets) and Surrey with the Fringe on Top. Both of these provided a deep look into the techniques and thought processes of Hollywood orchestrators, something that prepared me to compose my own original songs for Watch Out, Dave!, a cartoon I’m directing through BYU.

In the summer of 2015 I had the opportunity to live in India and explore the culture and come to love the music of the Hindustani tradition. My ORCA project was a study of the French virtuoso harpist, composer, and pedagogue Henriette Renié. Renié’s archive collection is housed at BYU. There are over 9,000 items in her collection, including but not limited to spiritual diaries, letters from family and colleagues, concert programs, and newspaper clippings. My project was reading through and transcribing portions of hundreds of original letters and spiritual diary entries, translating what I chose to include in my finished product, and writing a roughly 10,000-word article to be submitted for publication.

Over the past year I was given the opportunity to heavily research the repair of woodwind instruments and it was funded by an Orca grant. For 6 weeks I learned from woodwind repair experts at Summerhay’s music store in Murray, Utah. We would work together for about four hours per week and I would observe and receive instruction from them. I then used what I learned during my internship with Summerhay’s at my job in the Instrument Office at BYU by helping repair BYU instruments.

In order to study the relationship between music and color in areas of brain activity, I proposed to have participants’ brains scanned by an MRI machine while seeing different colors and listening to contrasting music samples. After learning that aural and visual response use completely different areas of the brain, the study was modified to instead connect emotions to music, since emotional response to music can be mapped in the brain. Based on the resulting data, I wrote a composition to be played by DuoX, a group in Amsterdam. This composition was written in segments, and the performers chose which …

This project began with a simple idea; what elements are important in representing other culture’s music and do we overlook certain elements because of our cultural biases? I wanted to see what would happen if I merged the quintessentially Western instrument, the piano, with the Balinese gamelan. This had been explored by previous composers who have made transcriptions of Balinese music for piano and have taken Balinese musical forms and composed new pieces for western instruments but they had ignored aspects of Balinese music that the Balinese consider extremely important. Louis DeSantis (1893-1940) was a prominent Italian-American clarinetist during the twentieth century. His musical training began in Naples and after immigrating to America in 1912, he held principal clarinet positions with the Chicago Civic Opera Company (1914-1917), St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (1925-1926), Cleveland Orchestra (1926-1929), Philadelphia Orchestra (1930) and the CBS Symphony Orchestra (1931-1940).

Louis DeSantis’s New Studies for Clarinet offers the clarinetist a chance to further familiarize himself with selected orchestral excerpts while also exploring the beautiful aspects of the Italian “bel canto” singing style. Artist Bio: Kioto Aoki is a conceptual photographer and experimental filmmaker who also makes books and installations engaging the material specificity of the analogue image and image-making process. Her work explores modes of perception via nuances of the mundane, with recent focusing on perceptions of movement between the still and the moving image. She received MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently a 2017-2018 HATCH artist in residence at the Chicago Artist Coalition.

In 1913, Willa Cather met opera-diva Olive Fremstad and the two formed a friendship that would span at least a decade. Fremstad has long been recognized as an inspiration for the character Thea Kronborg of Cather’s Song of the Lark (1915) but has not been portrayed as influential in any other aspects to Cather’s career. Letters sent by Fremstad to Cather have recently been located, and they reveal an ongoing and interdisciplinary dialogue between the two women that negotiates issues surrounding art and professionalism. I locate these letters within the broader context of Cather’s public and fictional statements about art …
