This thesis examines the creation of a Spanish National Identity during the late nineteenth century within the orchestral works of Tomás Bretón. Style analysis and the use of musical narratological methods place these works in the context of Spain’s turbulent nineteenth century and its new formation of national identity comparable to those that had been formed across the rest of Europe. The two conflicting styles that Bretón employed in his compositions represent two different approaches to the establishment of a national identity during the period. The Anatomy Of The Carpal Tunnel And Hand Function Of Musicians, Emily Ann Lorenzen

Musicians spend hours perfecting their trade, often leading to overuse injuries of the hand; of specific concern to musicians is carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This study evaluated the median nerve cross-sectional area and hand function of musicians and non-musicians. Patients completed the upper extremity and CTS specific function questionnaires. The median nerve cross-sectional area, and the width of the carpal tunnel were measured on ultrasound image. The median nerve cross-sectional area was greater in musicians than the non-musician group. The width of the carpal tunnel did not differ between the groups. Musicians showed higher levels of hand dysfunction than the …

Joseph Haydn’s career included a range of interests, jobs and royal duties that tells a story of the time in which he lived. The focus of this research includes the life and works of Haydn and how his journey from being stationed in Esterhazy to being self-employed in London affected his music. This journey will be shown through differences in his writing style from early works through his later works from London, including The Creation, as well as his several job appointments.

In a culture conducive to refining his compositions, Haydn was able to find success through his patrons and musical techniques. London was the largest musical city at the time, where advertising played a key role in the attendance at concerts. Haydn attended performances there which educated him on London’s music. His patrons (such as violinist Johann Peter Salomon and author Charles Burney) were immensely helpful in his growing musical career in London. The English Enlightenment was an all encompassing ideology, affecting many different fields such as science, religion, and the arts. Focus on supernatural stories and divine miracles gave way to rational thought, furthering science and promoting stories about the triumphs of humanity. Music was likewise affected by this new movement, catering itself to the interests of society; instead of depicting humanity as sinful and ignorant, compositions centered on the glory of creation and the strength and intellect of humanity. This paper focuses on Haydn’s use of drama in regard to his oratorio The Creation. To understand Haydn’s use of drama, we considered three main aspects. The first aspect is the means by which Haydn came about The Creation text and the meaning it held for him. The second aspect is an analysis of the work, particularly looking at text painting, comedic elements, and orchestration. Understanding The Needs Of Transgender Young Adults Dually Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Depression, Elizabeth Whalen

This study investigates the mental health treatment experiences of one transgender young adult and one genderqueer young adult who are dually diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and depression. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with these young adults and two of their parents. Interview questions centered around participants’ mental health treatment needs and experiences. The researcher conducted a phenomenological analysis of the data that yielded individual meaning units and global meaning units. The analysis found that individuals in this population experience low self-esteem, social difficulties, and a lack of appropriate mental health services.

The chronic lack of investment in the capital needed to foster the development of music during the period of colonial governance in Ireland and the early years of the Free State, combined with Ireland’s peripheral position in relation to the centres of musical modernism, resulted in composers in Ireland adopting modernist ideas at a very late stage, particularly in comparison with the chronology of Irish literary modernism. Background: Music is widely recognized as a motivating stimulus. Investigators have examined the use of music to improve a variety of motivation-related outcomes; however, these studies have focused primarily on passive music listening rather than active participation in musical activities. Objective: To examine the influence of participation in musical tasks and unique participant characteristics on energetic arousal. Methods: We used a one-way Welch’s ANOVA to examine the influence of musical participation (i.e., a non-musical control and four different musical task conditions) upon energetic arousal. Autodeus is the name of the program that has been developed and was designed to aid guitar students in the attainment and betterment of musical notation sight reading skills. Its primary goal is to provide a very flexible tool that has the ability to generate virtually endless types of sight reading exercises at many various skill levels.

This paper presents techniques developed for algorithmic composition of both polyphonic music, and of simulated jazz improvisation, using multiple novel data sources and the character-based recurrent neural network architecture char-rnn. In addition, techniques and tooling are presented aimed at using the results of the algorithmic composition to create exercises for musical pedagogy.

Based on the investigations of cognitive function and the processing of music, a system of techniques for music therapy called Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) was developed by Dr. Michael Thaut. Thaut (2014) defines NMT as “the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory, and motor dysfunctions due to neurologic disease of the human nervous system” (p. 1). This project proposes further study of one of the NMT techniques: Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS), which addresses sensorimotor rehabilitation. RAS is supported by extensive research in laboratory settings, resulting in improved gait and coordination with patients who suffered a cerebrovascular accident or were …

Music is an important part of cultures worldwide. It has been used throughout the ages as a method of conveying emotions to the listener. However, there is some confusion about exactly which areas of the brain are affected by music. This study shows the general areas of the brain stimulated by music, explaining how these sections influence emotion and learning capability. In addition, this paper demonstrates that music therapy may be helpful in relieving stress or some neurological disorders, based on the areas activated by music. Aural preparation is operationally defined as hearing, performing, decoding, and creating rhythms or pitches aurally prior to the introduction of music notation. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of aural preparation on second grade students’ music literacy rhythm skills (i.e. reading, performing, and dictation). The purpose of this study was to examine democratic practice in a large ensemble setting. A large (N = 63) auditioned concert band served as the case study for the present investigation. A series of self-guided rehearsals provided the opportunity for the ensemble members to engage in democratic musical governance without a conductor. Mixed-method methodologies were utilized to gain deep insight into interpersonal and musical events that took place during the group’s rehearsals. Several findings provide new insight into how democratic practices function in large ensembles, and how these practices impact music education instruction. Specifically, I analyzed the impact …

Although many programs aim to develop students’ listening skills and promote the appreciation of Western classical music, relatively few such programs incorporate visual art. This study examined the perceived effectiveness of the Edinburgh International Festival’s (EIF) Art of Listening program in reaching its stated goals to: develop skills for listening, encourage the enjoyment of listening to Western classical music, break down preconceptions held about Western classical music, cultivate a deeper relationship with the imagination through music and art, and encourage students’ personal responses to music. In this study I analyze and describe the contents of recommended band repertoire lists to explore which composers’ music is recommended and arranged for band most often. Fourteen repertoire lists provided by state-level music associations and independent publishers were included in the analysis, comprising a total of 32,267 entries. Previous research on band repertoire and programming has tended to focus on composers of advanced literature and has subsequently overlooked the contributions of composers who write music primarily intended for educational purposes.
