Imagined Sceneries is a work written by composer Dr. Koji Nakano of Burapha University, Thailand for two sopranos, koto, light percussion, narrations, soundscapes recorded in Kyoto, Japan in December 2015, and digital projections of Ebina Masao’s 1953 print series Tale of Genji. Imagined Sceneries’ reimagining and “re-sounding” of Heian Kyoto relies on a balance between what is imagined and what is experienced in performance. Its many elements collectively explore multiple layers of Japanese histories, soundscapes, environments, and sensibilities. Using Michel de Certeau’s concepts of the city, this thesis journeys through Nakano’s imagined spaces.

This monograph provides an in-depth examination of the background, musical, and performance issues related to Duke Ellington’s wordless melodies, as well as epigrammatic biographies of Ellington and three female vocalists whose voices he employed as instruments: Adelaide Hall, Kay Davis, and Alice Babs. As early as the twenties, Ellington innovatively used the voice as a wordless instrumental color—an idea he extended into both his secular and sacred works. His iconoclastic instrumentalization of the soprano voice in compositions such as “Creole Love Call”, “Minnehaha”, “Transblucency”, “On a Turquoise Cloud”, and “T.G.G.T.” merits consideration by scholars and performers alike; these artistically complex …

Lyric analysis is one of the most commonly used music therapy interventions with the mental health population, yet there is a gap in the research literature regarding song selection. The primary purpose of this study was to determine distinguishing linguistic characteristics of song lyrics most commonly used for lyric analysis with mental health consumers, as measured by LIWC2015 software. A secondary purpose was to provide an updated song list resource for music therapists and music therapy students working with the mental health population. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop a theory based on the experiences of music therapy students’ use of creative arts as a self-care practice. In addition, this study was intended to determine these students’ perception of self-care and the perceived differences between self-care practices among students and professionals. A grounded theory methodology (Strauss & Corbin, 1990) was utilized in order to analyze the data gained from semi-structured interviews. This thesis seeks to introduce principles of somatic education to children grades kindergarten through grade five in order to prevent future music-related injury and to promote free, wholebody movement. To do so, the principals of somatic education, specifically those of the Alexander Technique and Body Mapping, were combined with the current general music pedagogies by altering pre-existing lesson plans. One of the limitations of the band classroom is that performers are required to play a part that is specifically written with the needs of the ensemble in mind, and not the needs of the developing musician. Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961) was an Australian pianist and composer. While highly esteemed during his lifetime, Grainger's music has largely fallen into neglect outside the world of the wind band. However, Grainger left a vast quantity of highly idiomatic and meritorious piano music which deserves greater acceptance. To this end, this paper makes a survey of Grainger's output for piano, to show the merit of his music and prove that it remains relevant even today.

This study focuses on Virginia-Gene Rittenhouse and the history and organization of the New England Youth Ensemble (NEYE). Born in Lacombe, Canada in 1922, Virginia-Gene Rittenhouse was a violinist, pianist, composer, and notable music educator in the Seventh-day Adventist Church who established the New England Youth Ensemble in 1969. The ensemble has toured internationally since the early 1970s and it is the resident orchestra at Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Maryland. The youth orchestra has played numerous times under the baton of John Rutter and has performed frequently in Carnegie Hall under the auspices of MidAmerica Productions. The author …

The arts unite vision, hearing, touch, movement, speech, and emotion. Music strengthens spatial and conditional reasoning, problem solving, and creative thinking. For students, it can positively affect academic areas such as mathematics and creative scientific processes. Benefiting urban students in new ways, this project, a two semester after-school music program in inner-city Cleveland, was completed as part of our Honors degrees. Our purpose was to provide students with musical experiences, developing a foundation of basic musical skills that would allow them to be “tuneful, beatful, and artful” throughout their lives. Unaccompanied music provides a host of challenges for solo musicians, and especially for wind players. The performer cannot rely on accompaniment for embouchure rest or for realization of the harmonic content, due to only being able to play one pitch at a time. An unaccompanied musician has to breathe life into the music by themselves, requiring an intimate knowledge of the music, even moreso than is already required. While the decline of protest music in the USA has often been noted, a global perspective reveals that progressive, activist protest musics occupied lively niches in many music cultures worldwide (e.g., of Jamaica, India, Spain, Latin America) during similar periods, roughly the 1950s-80s. While on one level these music movements were embedded in particular socio-political movements, on a broader level they reflected an ardent commitment to the secular universalist ideals of the Enlightenment. The subsequent dramatic decline of all these protest musics—roughly since Fukuyama’s much-debated “end of history”—reflects a broader transformation of the global political climate. The purpose of this study was to fill the gap in literature and further examine the use of sensory diets in the field of occupational therapy. This study investigated the use of sensory diets among California occupational therapy practitioners. A mixed-methods design was used to collect data through a SurveyMonkey survey. The survey was sent out to members of the Occupational Therapy Association of California (OTAC) and received 98 respondents within one month. Participants worked among various clinical settings and implemented sensory diets with various client populations. Analysis of melody, harmony, texture and rhythm demonstrates Redford’s methods of underscoring the principles of good and evil while demonstrating a Christian worldview.

Improvising A Microtonal System: The Creative Implications Of A Hybrid Scale Calculated From The Reversed Fretboard Structure Of A Standard 24-Fret Guitar, And The Resulting Xenharmonic Microtonal System Vol. I, Michael Nielsen

This practice-based research (driven by an initial improvisatory pluck on the opposite side of a fretted note, producing a microtone) focuses on the development of a new hybrid microtonal system derived from inverting the measurements of a 24-fret guitar fingerboard and superimposing them onto a normal fretboard, produced a 40-fret guitar with numerous additional microtonal intervals. This resulted in a composite scale structure consisting of a standard twelve-tone equal temperament (12-TET) system in addition to microtonal intervals of varied sizes. งานวิจัยเรื่อง วิเคราะห์ทางขับร้องเพลงละครและเพลงหน้าพาทย์บทคอนเสิร์ต ตับนางลอย บ้านพาทยโกศล โดยครูอุษา แสงไพโรจน์ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษามูลบทที่เกี่ยวข้องและวิธีการขับร้องเพลงละครและเพลงหน้าพาทย์บทคอนเสิร์ต ตับนางลอยบ้านพาทยโกศล โดยครูอุษา แสงไพโรจน์ ผู้วิจัยได้ทำการเลือกศึกษาเพลงจำนวน 8 เพลง ได้แก่ เพลงโอ้ชาตรี เพลงโอ้โลมใน เพลงโอ้ปี่ใน เพลงช้าปี่ใน เพลงโลมนอก เพลงโล้ เพลงเชิดฉิ่ง และเพลงเชิดนอก ซึ่งผลการศึกษาสามารถสรุปได้ดังนี้ ทางขับร้องเพลงบทคอนเสิร์ตตับนางลอยมีต้นกำเนิดมาตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 โดยนางเจริญ พาทยโกศล เป็นผู้ขับร้องคนแรกและเป็นผู้ถ่ายทอดวิธีการขับร้องให้คุณหญิงไพฑูรย์ กิตติ-วรรณ และครูอุษา แสงไพโรจน์ ผู้รับช่วงวิธีการขับร้องเป็นรุ่นที่ 3 จากการศึกษาทางขับร้องทั้ง 8 เพลงพบว่าทุกเพลงใช้กลุ่มเสียงทางเพียงออล่างเป็นหลัก มีการกำกับจังหวะที่สามารถแบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 แบบ คือ การกำกับเพลงที่มีจังหวะควบคุมและการกำกับเพลงที่มีจังหวะลอย พบสังคีตลักษณ์ที่สามารถแบ่งได้เป็น 3 แบบ คือ การขับร้องที่มีดนตรีรับ การขับร้องที่มีดนตรีแทรกกลางคำร้อง และการขับร้องพร้อมกับการบรรเลงดนตรี วิธีการขับร้องที่ถือเป็นเอกลักษณ์ คือ การขับร้องแบบไม่ปั้นคำ เป็นการออกเสียงพยางค์เดี่ยวแบบตรงเสียงไม่มีการปรุงแต่งเสียง และพบกลวิธีการขับร้องทั้งหมด 10 กลวิธี คือ การครั่นเสียง การปั้นคำ การกระทบ-เสียง การผันเสียงลง การผันเสียงขึ้น การใช้หางเสียง การตวัดเสียง การกดเสียง การเหินเสียง และการกลึงเสียง กลวิธีที่ใช้มากที่สุดคือ การครั่นเสียง มีทั้งการครั่นเสียงในเอื้อน การครั่นเสียงในคำร้อง และกลวิธีการขับร้องที่มีเฉพาะเพลง คือ การกลึงเสียง พบในเพลงช้าปี่ในเท่านั้น ส่วนวิธีการขับร้องที่มีช่วงการเอื้อนเป็นทำนองโดยใช้ลมหายใจเดียว คือ เพลงเชิดนอก
