Philosopher In A Jar, Christopher Castillo

Theses and Dissertations

Philosopher in a Jar is composed for vibraphone, piano, electric guitar, and amplified contrabass. The music was inspired by the unpublished short story, "The Galleon," by T.V. Swantek. Drawing from the ideas of the seventeenth century French philosopher René Descartes, the story is a fictional realization of Descartes "evil demon" scenario and references his philosophical idea: "Cogito Ergo Sum." In "The Galleon," the artificial intelligence entity is the "evil demon" and is represented in the music by the use of perfect fourth intervals and steady rhythmic phrases. A musician’s awareness of intonation (i.e. “being in tune”) is an important skill. While musicians are highly sensitive to “out of tune” notes, research suggests that this sensitivity is categorical rather than absolute (Siegel & Siegel, 1977). If intonation is heard “categorically,” musicians’ classification of intonation errors (both magnitude and direction), would be expected to be poor. This experiment was designed to determine whether or not musicians could categorically perceive mistuned musical intervals, as well as to investigate the relative limits of absolute intonation perception. The USU Opera Theatre will be presenting Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor translated from his German back into English – not exactly Shakespeare’s English, but still Shakespeare’s story. We’ve further adapted the piece by trading out the standard Elizabethan setting for a more modern time and place.
