"A Song Workers Everywhere Sing:" Zilphia Horton And The Creation Of Labor's Musical Canon, Chelsea Hodge

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Zilphia Horton, a college educated, middle class white woman from the rural American south, created the canon of music that would become central to the black freedom struggle in postwar America. Horton's work in the post-New Deal labor movement established the methods of incorporating protest music in movements of social justice that prevailed for the rest of the century. The work songs and hymns that she collected, arranged, notated, and published while music director at Highlander Folk School in Monteagle, TN--including "We Shall Overcome," "This Little Light of Mine," "We Shall Not Be Moved"--motivated generations of activists as they transformed …

Sicilian Instrumental Music During The Ottocento: A Rediscovery Of Forgotten Repertoire For Piano, Alison C. Snow

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

During the Italian Ottocento, purely instrumental genres were overshadowed by opera and, as a result, have been largely forgotten today both within and without Italy. This project will explore this lacuna through a case study drawn from the piano music of three Sicilian composers: Ga spare Tamburello, Giuseppe Perrotta and Gaetano lmpallomeni. By evaluating how their music embodies Ottocento culture, as well as its abstract musical content, performers will show that this neglected repertoire is worthy of repeated contemporary revival. Donald Martino (1931-2005) made important contributions to the percussion repertoire with his chamber music and solo percussion pieces spanning from the 1950s to his last compositions written just before his death in 2005. Many of his chamber music pieces include percussion, and are some of the most significant contributions to the contemporary chamber medium of the last half of the twentieth century. The compositions often include performance techniques that require additional instruction, or demonstration. A Musical Mirror: Spain's Ever-Changing Political Landscape And Its Reflection In Popular Music, Vera Grek '14

This thesis examines the governmental changes in Spain from the beginning of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship in 1936 until the end of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero’s first term as Prime Minister in 2008 in order to determine the degree to which politics affects cultural change in Spain, focusing on popular music. The first chapter deals with Franco’s regime and the laws that controlled the country and the adoption of the southern Spanish traditions as the official Spanish culture, repressing the individual characteristics of the other regions. Preparing Music Educators To Work With Students With Diverse Abilities: An Introduction To Music Therapy, Elizabeth Mitchell

Music Faculty Publications

Music education programs are uniquely situated within Canadian universities as most disciplines do not offer honours education programs at the undergraduate level. Within faculties of music, honours music education students engage in both practical and philosophical preparation for their teaching careers prior to acceptance and enrolment at a Faculty of Education. These students often return to departments of music education to pursue graduate work after having taught music within public or private school systems.

Music teachers regularly teach children with special needs within self-contained as well as integrated or inclusive classrooms. Research indicates that music educators are enthusiastic about the …
