Protestant missionaries from England first set foot in Tonga in the early 19th century. Along with a radically new theology, they brought with them a musical style rooted in Western European tradition. Tongans whole-heartedly embraced Christianity and eagerly integrated elements of European culture into their own – both in a religious and in a musical sense. This combining of cultures resulted in a unique style of hymn singing that blended Western tonality and form with traditional Tongan musical practices. The primary goal of this project was to compose a companion duet for eight of the sixteen etudes in Concert Studies for Trumpet, providing a pedagogical tool for use in the trumpet studio at BYU. The remaining eight etudes are being considered for a similar project next year. Once the entire sixteen etudes are completed, I plan to submit the project for publication.

The southern most Indian state, Tamil Nadu, is home to over 40 colonies of leprosy affected people. To maintain livelihood, these “untouchables” generally resort to a life of begging. The situation has vastly improved in the past decade as charitable groups have helped accommodate the medical and physical needs of the people. Unfortunately, the colony children remain largely disadvantaged because of their social status and poor living conditions. In 2001, the non-profit organization, Rising Star Outreach (RSO), began a boarding school to help the children of the colonies.

Exploring The Impact Of German-American Heritage And The Musical Works Of William Henry Pommer, Holly Cassell

William Henry Pommer (1851-1937) was a versatile German-American composer and musician of St. Louis. He held various musical positions as an educator, director, and performer. He was also an active composer with almost 500 works to his credit, composed in a variety of styles that reflect the variety of the different positions he held. Through archival work in St. Louis and by studying and playing through Pommer’s music, we have identified different styles that he composed in and begun to pick music for performances to best represent his work. Salvation Triptych is a three movement composition for choir, winds, strings, and percussion. The texts include the traditional Kyrie and two Christian texts from the 4th-5th Centuries: The Word of the Cross by Paulinus of Nola (trans. Helen Waddell) and two stanzas from a hymn by Ambrose of Milan. Movement I: Kyrie involves the greatest musical forces (SATB choir, flute, oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, violin I and II, viola, cello, bass, timpani, gong, chimes, and wood block). Music And Conflict Resolution: Can A Music And Story Centered Workshop Enhance Empathy?, Parfait Adegboyé Bassalé

Dissertations and Theses

The Story and Song Centered Pedagogy (SSCP) is a workshop that uses songs, stories and reflective questioning to increase empathy. This preliminary study tested the prediction that being exposed to the SSCP would increase empathy using, the Emotional Concern (EC) and Perspective Taking (PT) subscales of the renowned Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) (Davis, 1990). Subjects self-reported their answers to the IRI before and after undergoing the SSCP intervention. Comparing their pre and post intervention results, no statistically significant changes were noticed for the EC and PT scales (p-value = 0.7093 for EC; p-value = 0.6328 for PT). Teresa Carreño (1853–1917) first performed Edvard Grieg’s (1843– 1907) Pictures from Folk Life, op. 19 [Folkelivsbilleder] and Piano Concerto in A Minor, op. 16, during her tours in the United States in the early 1880s. She continued to perform his works in the United States and abroad through 1914. Previously overlooked correspondence, reviews, and other primary sources, such as concert programs, housed in the Edvard Grieg Collection in the Bergen Offentlige Bibliothek, and the Teresa Carreño Collection in Archives and Special Collections of the Vassar College Libraries, are examined in this article in order to provide fresh …

An Analysis Of Middle/High School Band And Orchestra Festival Ratings, Phillip Hash

The purpose of this study was to compare festival ratings among multiple instrumental ensemble types (bands and orchestras), grade levels (middle school and high school), and classifications (1-6). Data included individual and final ratings from 144 judges (108 concert- performance, 36 sight-reading) at 36 contest sites sponsored by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA) in 2010. Research questions examined the distribution, reliability, and group differences of ratings by ensemble type (band vs. orchestra), age level (middle school vs. high school), and classification (1-6). The average final rating was 1.58 (SD = .66) and 91.5% (n = 901) of …

Reports, illustrates, and assesses a fragment of manuscript music now in the G. Ross Roy Collection at the University of South Carolina, for Burns's song "The German Lairdie," headed in Burns's hand, and possibly with the music in his hand also. A note with the fragment, which was exhibited as Burns's autograph in 1896, states that it had been sent by Burns to the Edinburgh editor and publisher James Johnson, for inclusion in his Scots Musical Museum.

This especially holds true in fields or activities that require extreme accuracy or attention to nuance. The written violin repertoire is vast, yet the amount of published material is relatively limited to performers. Available viola repertoire is even narrower. A person can easily find pieces by the most famous composers, such as Beethoven, Mozart and Bach, in a music library. These pieces, however, represent only a mere fraction of actual written material. There are many lesser-known composers whose works have been virtually ignored. The adoption of Hip-Hop by the world’s youth is a turning point in the history of youth culture in particular and global public culture in general. The embracing of Hip-Hop in the West African country of Ghana is exemplary of this worldwide transformation. The indigenous Ghanaian version of Hip-Hop is Hip-Life. This Ghanaian musical genre is a combination of Hip-Hop and High-Life. High-Life is also a Ghanaian genre with West African and Afro- Diaspora roots. This research grant allowed me to spend time studying something with which I have been fascinated for years. As a long-time serious music student, I have seen a surprising disparity in the musical progress of students devoting comparable hours to practicing their instrument. I have been at times amazed at the musical proficiency of certain fellow students who spend two to four hours per day practicing; at other times, discouraged at the lack of musical proficiency of other fellow students, who spend up to twice that much time practicing.

As I near my host family’s neighborhood, the streets become constraining tunnels. Lining the curbs are wall after wall of concrete above my head, topped with razor wires, electric lines, or metal spikes. The only breaks to the walled monotony are tall, jail-like gates. Shutting the automatic gate behind me instills the intentional impression of exclusion from the outside. Privacy and security of walled homes is increasingly sought after, even in townships where resistance to apartheid once forged strong communal unity. The violoncello emerged as a vehicle of virtuosity starting in the latter half of the 17th Century and continued to gain prestige as a capable solo instrument throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Modern cellists are aware of the plethora of excellent romantic and modern/post-modern solo cello compositions, and the relative dearth of excellent classical repertoire composed for the same instrument. Apart from Haydn’s two concertos, Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, and five sonatas, and to a lesser degree, the works of the cellist/composer Luigi Boccherini, it is hard to find classical cello compositions being performed today.

This project greatly benefits the School of Music because it provides the Brigham Young University Gamelan Ensemble a new piece of music written specifically for their unique instrumentation. The BYU Gamelan Ensemble was recently formed in Fall 2008 under the direction of Jeremy Grimshaw. The ensemble plays custom made Balinese gamelan instruments imported from Bali, a small island near Indonesia. Traditionally, there were three types of gamelan each with distinct tuning systems. Consequently, each gamelan could only play one tuning system. However, BYU’s gamelan was uniquely constructed to combine all three tuning systems into one gamelan making it possible to …
