This dissertation proposes to consider the music of French composers Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Ravel written during the Great War, under tremendous professional, personal and cultural pressures. These pressures are examined largely through these composers’ correspondence and the writings of contemporary critics, composers and artists in the first two chapters; a selection of their output from the war years, in particular their piano works and their chamber music, is the subject of the third chapter. Effects Of Physical Movement In Rhythm Instruction In Early Instrumentalist Development, Jessica Horne-Greene

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this study was to investigate if including physical movement in instruction improves instrumental music student's rhythmic abilities. Within the rhythmic instruction, the research study specifically focused on student's rhythmic ability and note reading improvements. Participants in this study included instrumental music students in grades four, five, and six, in a middle-class school district (N=18). The control group was given four weeks of traditional rhythm instruction, with a traditional counting method. The experimental group was given rhythm instruction incorporating physical movement over a period of four weeks. Prior to the lessons, both the experimental and control groups were …

This book examines the exercise of power in the Stalinist music world as well as the ways in which composers and ordinary people responded to it. It presents a comparative inquiry into the relationship between music and politics in the German Democratic Republic and Poland from the aftermath of World War II through Stalin’s death in 1953, concluding with the slow process of de-Stalinization in the mid- to late-1950s. The author explores how the Communist parties in both countries expressed their attitudes to music of all kinds, and how composers, performers, and audiences cooperated with, resisted, and negotiated these suggestions …

According to the 2000 census report for the state of Utah, the state population included almost 87,883 foreign-born citizens from Latin America. In 1990 there were only 13,825. Compared with Asian-born citizens and other foreign-born citizens, this is the highest increase of an ethnic group of people in Utah. Three-fourths of these Latino foreign-born citizens are entering Utah from Mexico. These numbers don’t even include the native-born Mexicans that have grown up in Utah. All signs and research suggests that this trend will continue. Now, more than ever, it is important to ensure that Mexican immigrants have a place in …

The zealous Christian missionary Patrick arrived in Ireland in 432 A.D., laboring to introduce to the Celtic tribes there the gospel and monasticism. He used bells, among other clerical instruments, for this purpose. Bells were employed to sundry ends, from the mundane gathering of the missionaries to the more miraculous effecting of curses. His followers, both members of the church and fellow missionaries, revered the bells that Patrick used. Accordingly, his bells would become treated as relics, passed down from cleric to cleric as a divine investiture. This project was designed to create an index to the over 5,000 letters of the violist William Primrose that are held in the Primrose International Viola Archive (PIVA) at Brigham Young University. This index will be an aid to violists or others interested in researching aspects of the life and career of William Primrose through his letter. After my work on the index it is over halfway completed. As it is with many archival projects, this was a great task for one undergraduate. Rediscovering The New York Harp Ensemble, Laura Allen, David A. Day

Almost forty years ago, a Hungarian immigrant named Aristid von Wurtzler created a quartet of harpists known as the New York Harp Ensemble. Throughout the Ensemble’s career, they played in over 60 countries, performed at the White House on many occasions over the course of four administrations, and even performed for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. From standard works by Beethoven to jazzy Gershwin pieces, from beautiful works of Saint-Saens to familiar tunes such as Yankee Doodle, Wurtzler created over 200 arrangements for this quartet. The year 1997 brought the death of Aristid von Wurtzler, and with his …
