2011 Spring Semester

With the production of the upcoming film version of The Great Gatsby, an appropriate music selection must be made for the movie. The song’s placement in the film, such as which scene it will be played in, its lyrics and its overall theme must be analyzed in order to find its suitability for the movie. As music producer, I have chosen the song “I Miss You” by Aaron Hall to be incorporated into The Great Gatsby film. This song is appropriate for the film because its lyrics and emotional feel match the novel’s themes of the heartbreak of lost …

Soul Medicine: The Role Of Traditional Senegalese Music In A Therapeutic Context, Alexa K. Dorris

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this study was to discover the role of traditional Senegalese music used in therapeutic contexts. Specifically, I sought to discover its uses and understand the ideologies and cultural significance behind its usage. I collected data using participant observation, interviewing, and archival research in Dakar and Ngoundiame, a Serrere village, Senegal. I found that music was used for cathartic and healing purposes in two primary schools in Dakar and in the traditional ndepp ceremony, respectively. These usages of music reflected larger themes in Senegalese culture. In conclusion, I recommended that music be integrated into mental health treatment through …

Completed "Scales in Fives." This is a scale exercise book for clarinetists in two volumes-beginner and advanced. Chromatic, all major, melodic and harmonic minor scales are written out in five note groupings with repeat signs and rehearsal numbers for easy access in rehearsals and lessons. This format of learning scales has proven successful in my teaching at WKU and I am currently looking for a publisher for these books. A sample page is available for download on this site.

In today's world of music, everything is constantly changing alongside the progression of technology. With these developments, new musical genres have emerged and many people are still unaware of them. If you listen, you can hear these styles and genres being used in popular music.

For the past several months I have jumped headfirst into the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and rave scene. I have been documenting, observing, and researching all that it has to offer. Argentine tango, which originated around 1890, has spanned just over a century in its development and evolution. During this time, tango music has been integrated into many genres. Despite this popularity, there is only a small body of research that discusses performance technique, history, and musical lineage. This thesis is a supplement to The Tango Fake Book, a book of lead sheets published by Mark Wyman in 2006. The objective of this paper is to examine how technology and the internet has shaped the business model of the record industry. For decades the record industry operated under a service-type model before eventually transitioning into an industry of physical products. The industry's transition began with the consolidation of major record companies by media conglomerates. Driven by their venture for profit, major record companies only capitalized on artists with the greatest potential of generating revenue. Consequently, this compromised artistic creativity and ultimately encouraged by the development of an increasingly homogenized music market. Incomplete (six) is comprised of six short movements written for full orchestra. Each movement depicts a different idea as it relates to the number six. In biblical numerology the number six represents incompletion and shortcoming while seven signifies completeness and fulfillment. Six therefore cannot be complete without the addition of one to make seven. The number six is commonly used to represent man since he was created on the sixth day of creation while the number one represents God as the one true God. Tibetan Buddhism has numerous detailed and diverse traditions of ritual music that play an integral part in religious practices. Despite the prominence of such performances in Tibetan Buddhist life, spectators and researchers alike have frequently misunderstood them based purely on physical observation. As a religion that focuses on the cultivation and development of the mind, any analysis focusing only on physical description is significantly flawed.
