The Effect Of Group Music Therapy On Adjustment Disorder For Korean Population In The United States, You-Ri Lee

The purpose of this study is to present multiple case studies of three individuals between the ages of 19 and 31, living in the New York City area and participating in a music therapy group for Korean exchange students experiencing Adjustment Disorder in the United States. The study provides an in depth discussion of the group music therapy process, which took place over nine one hour sessions held at Montclair State University. The case study is preceded by an extensive literature review describing the needs of the population, the lack of music therapy interventions and/or models with this population, and …

1bis thesis entitled A Woodland Symphony for Chamber Orchestra presents a symphonic work written in three movements scored for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in B-flat, two bassoons, two horns in F, two trumpets in B-flat, two trombones, harp, percussion {timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals), eight first violins, six second violins, four violas, four cellos, and two double basses. It represents the culmination of the Master of Music degree in Composition. In addition to the score of the symphony, there is an analysis of some key components of the symphony's harmonic language. This study explored the current practices of early childhood educators' utilization and perception about music in their classrooms. Early childhood educators are defined as individuals who have completed post-secondary training at an accredited college or university in early childhood education and are registered with the ECEBC Registry. Early childhood centers are defined as either preschools or licensed group child care centers. The purpose of this study was to observe and collect data while monitoring the responses of three individuals to recorded presentations of four folk songs. The individuals, or participants, were all residents of a state-run facility in the southern region of the United States. The participants were females diagnosed with mental retardation and autism spectrum disorder, and they all exhibited one or more stereotypy behaviors in some form or another. The primary purpose of the study was to see if change in timbre of the songs would alter the stereotypy movements exhibited by these participants as the songs were presented …

Relationships Among Elementary Teachers' Self-Perceptions Of Musical Intelligence, Perceived Value Of Instruction Through Music, And Classroom Instructional Practices, Peggy Jo Hubbard Mccullough

This study was designed to examine educators' perceptions and practices of instruction through music. Using primarily quantitative methods for collection and analysis of data, correlations were sought among the primary variables: elementary teachers' perceptions of the value of instruction through music, their self-reported frequency of instruction through music, and their self-evaluated level of musical intelligence. The hypothesis for this study was that a positive correlation existed between any two of the three variables.

Participants included elementary teachers representing instructional grades one through five from four elementary schools in the southeastern part of the United States. To collect data, a survey …

Missa Prolationem is a setting of the traditional Latin Ordinary mass text that seeks to explore counterpoint in the context of metric problems. Though Ockeghem’s specific contrapuntal techniques were not utilized, his Missa Prolationem served as the original inspiration for this setting of the mass. Each movement attempts to explore a specific problem created by the interaction of the counterpoint and meter. In the Kyrie, contrapuntal passages in multiple meters are both superimposed and juxtaposed. The Gloria includes a triple fugue in which each subject is in a different time signature. The Credo is a series of canons at descending …

The aim of this qualitative, abductive, and phenomenological inquiry was to develop categories based on participants' perceptions of their improvisation and listening experiences. As using improvised music in clinical music therapy is an important method, this study expanded the knowledge of and language needed to describe this very sensitive and insightful communication process. Processes Of Alienation: Marx, Orff And Kodaly, Cathy Benedict

Music Education Publications

Using Marx as a lens through which to interrogate music methodology, in particular those espoused by Orff and Kodaly, this article suggests that rather than the free play and creativity Orff and Kodaly intended, the implementation of these methods in a strict and unmindful manner, often alienates both teacher and student from musicking. Thus these methods have become more real than the music itself and as such, music making within them is abstracted from the use-value of musicking and consequently exchanged as a commodity.
