This paper explores the influence of John Cage (1912-1992) on contemporary experimental music focusing on the indeterminate work The Importance of Being Earmarked (2008). Firstly through an investigation of selected works from Cage (written between the 1930s- 1960's) and the concepts that form a Cagean trajectory, and secondly by showing how a contemporary composer has adopted this trajectory in the composition of a new work that combines sound-installation, theatre, and Max/MSP programming.

Performing Le Merle Nair: An Investigation Into The Performance Issues In The Music Of Olivier Messiaen, Kirsten Smith

This paper investigates certain performance issues associated with Messiaen's 1951 chamber work, Le Merle Noir. This paper can be seen as a practical guide to performers wishing to gain a deeper perspective on the interpretational issues associated with performing this work. It is ·written from the vantage point of a performer and should be seen to complement a number of already existing analytical studies of this piece. The paper can also be read as an exemplar of the research a performer makes when developing a coherent and truthful interpretation of a music work.

This study documents the musical career and teaching methodology of one of Ireland’s leading choral conductors, Ethna Barror (1915 - ) and explores the factors contributing to her success as a conductor, with particular reference to her choir, The Lindsay Singers. The study is informed by life history methodology, focusing on interviews with Barror which were conducted over an extended period of time. The research also includes interviews with some of Barror’s peers and choir members. This data is supported by documentary material relating to the Lindsay Singers performances, achievements and awards, and the repertoire they performed. The research is …

Skip to Next Section COMPOSERS COMMONLY USE MAJOR OR MINOR SCALES to create different moods in music.Nonmusicians show poor discrimination and classification of this musical dimension; however, they can perform these tasks if the decision is phrased as happy vs. sad.We created pairs of melodies identical except for mode; the first major or minor third or sixth was the critical note that distinguished major from minor mode. Musicians and nonmusicians judged each melody as major vs. minor or happy vs. sad.We collected ERP waveforms, triggered to the onset of the critical note. Dmitri Borisovich Kabalevsky (1904-1987) is considered one of the composers who made the greatest contribution to the teaching repertoire for the piano. His interest in young people and devotion to music education has resulted in books and articles, as well as widely used pedagogical works including Childrenfs Pieces, Op. 27, Twenty-Four Little Pieces, Op. 39, and Five Sets of Variation, Op. 51. Many teaching materials in beginning to early intermediate levels include Kabalevskyfs accessible and imaginative pieces from these collections. The sequence of pitches which form a musical melody can be transposed or inverted. Since the 1970s, music theorists have modeled musical transposition and inversion in terms of an action of the dihedral group of order 24. More recently music theorists have found an intriguing second way that the dihedral group of order 24 acts on the set of major and minor chords. We illustrate both geometrically and algebraically how these two actions are {\it dual}. Both actions and their duality have been used to analyze works of music as diverse as Hindemith and the Beatles.

Toward A General Theory Of Polymeter: Polymetric Potential And Realization In Elliott Carter's Solo And Chamber Instrumental Works After 1980, Ève Poudrier

This dissertation proposes a conceptual framework and tools for the analysis of polymeter in contemporary musical practices applied to the short instrumental works of Elliott Carter, where multiple temporalities have been identified as an essential aesthetic component. Three works are discussed in more detail: Changes for guitar (1983), Esprit rude/Esprit doux I for flute and clarinet (1985), and 90+ for piano (1994). The composer's use of metrical modulations and structural polyrhythms is re-evaluated in the context of a theory of polymeter. Structural polyrhythms are represented by means of proximity charts, and Carter's compositional strategies are explored, including rhetorical use of …

This study deals with the keyboard percussion works of Serbian composer, Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic, with a special focus on understanding and interpreting two of his concert works: Ultimatum I and Ultimatum II. Part one contextualises these two works by offering the most complete life and works study of the composer to date. This section concludes with some observations regarding Zivkovic's compositional style and musical background.
