Electroacoustic music for double bass can be classified into the following two types of repertoire: real-time/interactive computer music or tape music. Real-time/interactive computer music is the newer of the two types and involves the algorithmic generation of electronic sounds in live performance. Pre-recorded electronic sounds are usually avoided, and instead, the sound of live input is used as the source material for electronic sounds. A computer is used for capture, processing and synthesis, and the software is usually written in the MAX/MSP environment. The second category, tape music, is the older of the two types of electroacoustic music for the …

The notion of a “cover song” is central to an understanding of contemporary popular music, and has certainly received its share of attention in writing about contemporary music, from the mainstream press to slightly more technical ethnomusicological studies such as “Cross-Cultural ‘Countries’: Covers, Conjuncture, and the Whiff of Nashville in Música Sertaneja (Brazilian Commercial Country Music)” (Dent, 2005). In many major U.S. cities, musicians make a living in “cover” bands, recreating the music of well-known groups such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, U 2, the Who, ABBA, the Dave Matthews Band, the Grateful Dead, and others. American composer Libby Larsen has created works in many musical genres. Larsen’s vocal music recordings have featured well-known performers such as Arleen Augér, for which Larsen won a Grammy as producer. Her vocal music employs texts from various sources including Nursery Rhymes and the Bible, as well as numerous others. Larsen works solely on commission, and in 2000 Larsen was approached by the Marilyn Horne Foundation to compose a group of songs for Metropolitan Opera competition winner, soprano Meaghan Miller. Larsen had always been interested in the wives of Henry VIII and the commission request finally gave her the opportunity …

The first portion of this dissertation is an original composition A Symphonic Poem on Dante’s Inferno. This symphonic poem is in three movements: I. The Dream, depicts Dante falling asleep and describes the beginning of the Inferno, II. The Journey, depicts Virgil and Dante walking towards the Gates of Hell, III. Hell’s Depths; explores Hell’s Gates, the Souls of Limbo and the Nine Circles of Hell. Dante realizes at the age of thirty-five that he has wandered into the Dark Wood of Error. Sound Frames is a one movement piece for orchestra. Its formal structure is free. As the title demonstrates, each section of this composition is “framed” side by side with the next one. The piece is organized in a non-traditional way, with contrasting sections one being followed by another and occasionally they are recollected throughout the work. The music of the well known 20th Century composer György Ligeti was the primary inspiration for this composition, specially his “Zehn Stücke Für Bläserquintett”. Shortly before 1800, the publication of livrets de mise en scène, short manuals including information regarding costumes, set designs, and blocking (i.e., the movement of characters on stage), became increasingly popular in France. While theater scholars (Gösta M. Bergman, Marvin Carlson, Hellmuth Christian Wolff) have recognized the value of these documents for the history of staging (and blocking in particular), musicologists have tended to focus on their impact on visual aspects and realization of drama. Those who have looked at staging (H. Robert Cohen, Rebecca S. Wilberg, M. Elizabeth C. Bartlet) have largely ignored the period prior to 1827, …

Night is a work in 2 movements, each depicting different aspects or qualities of night. Several instruments are given solo roles to depict the many parts of a night, from the wind, stars, moon, and the individual observing the night. The first movement, an introduction and prelude, brings forth elements of the overwork. These elements are later developed in the later movements. The second movement uses the solo clarinet as a character trying to escape an enveloping night. The dissonance and darkness seem overwhelming at points and pushing the clamorous clarinet to its extremes.

The Consensual Assessment Technique As A Measure Of Creativity In Children's Musical Compositions Motivated By Visual And Verbal Stimuli, Katie Elizabeth Toups

ABSTRACT The purposes of this study were: 1) To compare the relationship between the degrees of creativity shown in musical compositions of third grade students (N=163) when they were exposed to either a visual or verbal stimulus, and 2) to examine inter-judge reliability for creativity ratings using the Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT) with instrumental group compositions. Throughout a nine-week teaching unit, all subjects participated in regular music classes where they learned compositional techniques and concepts. They worked in small cooperative learning groups of 3 to 6 students throughout the unit to compose several “mini” compositions and two large-scale compositions. For …

“Shui Diao Ge Tou” from Poems of the Sung Dynasty is a piece for full orchestra. It was suggested by two poems of Su Dong Po. One is “Shui Diao Ge Tou”. The other one is “Jiang Chen Zi”. No movement of this piece has a fixed form, but the whole piece takes on the arch structure. The musical development is analogous to the texts of the poems, and the whole piece is controlled by two principal themes. They can first be found at measures 6 and 15. This paper will investigate Reich's 1967 composition Piano Phase, exploring the work's development from tape loops, the resultant patterns found in the work, the process involved, notation used, and also examples of phasing found in other works. Further, discussions will also take place with regards to both the author's, and David Cossin's adaptations of Piano Phase, including instrument choice and configuration, film and lighting requirements and rehearsal techniques. The purpose of this study was to document and explore the use and perception of verbal and nonverbal teaching behaviors of selected high school band directors. Participants were six successful high school band directors and members of their top-performing ensembles. Directors were videotaped during rehearsals. Videos were subsequently analyzed. Systematic observation data consisted of frequencies and percentages of conductor magnitude, filler use, and time spent on and off podium; frequency and time of each sequential pattern component; and instructional pacing. Directors and students viewed and rated video excerpts of their directors using 10-point Likert scales. Participants then completed a 22-item …

Some of the mast extensive and significant textual changes in all of Puccini's operas appear in the published revisions of Madama Butterfly. Many of these verbal modifications, together with cuts and additions to the score, influence the dramatic depiction of the protagonists. Changes to Pinkerton's character soften an insensitive and even offensive figure who, after all, needs to be convincing as the object of Butterfly's love. For Cio-Cio-San, three rounds of revision mean a gradual loss of complexity on any fronts, bringing an exotic, mercurial heroine closer to operatic convention.
