Heitor Villa-Lobos is one of the most important names in South American music and probably the most important name in Brazilian music. His musical output includes symphonies, symphonic poems, operas, chamber music, concertos, and choral music, among other genres. His choral music output is significant and includes pieces in which the chorus seems to be used for color and rhythm in a primarily instrumental texture, educational music, folk and secular pieces, large scale choral pieces, and sacred music. This document provides a brief survey of his choral music and a conductor's study of his last two choral works, Bendita Sabedoria …

You Better Work!: Underground Dance Music in New York City is arguably the first ethnography of electronic dance music culture; it is also one of the first ethnomusicologically-influenced monographs on mediated dance music. Kai Fikentscher deftly avoids the wealth of music industry genre tags (such as "deep house" or "two step garage") that plague many writings on electronic dance music, instead focusing on a specific dance community in New York City which began its social dance practice in the days of disco and continued the practice well into the 1990s. An Early Violin Sonata By Peter Cornelius: A Critical Edition And Study, Johannes P. Knijff

The dissertation offers a critical edition of the Violin Sonata in E-flat Major (1844) by Peter Cornelius (1824–1874) based on the autograph manuscript (A-Wn Mus. Hs. 4752, fol. 31r–47r). An early work of a composer still in his student years, the sonata can nonetheless be considered one of the most ambitious instrumental compositions of Cornelius, who is well-known for his opera Der Barbier von Bagdad and his art songs. The sonata's four movements are: Allegro (340 mm.); Scherzo (B-flat major, 416 mm.); Fantasie (C minor, 35 mm.); and the finale (252 mm.).

Alice Parker (b. 1925) has earned a place of respect in choral music through more than half a century of work in arranging and composition, conducting, teaching and writing. Her works reflect diverse interests, from short, unison pieces for treble choir, to the complexity of unaccompanied madrigals, to major choral/orchestral works and operas. Conductors and singers all over the world have been influenced by her writings, seminars and SINGS, and she continues to extol the value of music, both in the concert hall and as a part of everyday life. This study looked at how people store and retrieve tonal music explicitly and implicitly using a production task. Participants completed an implicit task (tune stem completion) followed by an explicit task (cued recall). The tasks were identical except for the instructions at test time. They listened to tunes and were then presented with tune stems from previously heard tunes and novel tunes. For the implicit task, they were asked to sing a note they thought would come next musically. For the explicit task, they were asked to sing the note they remembered as coming next. Experiment 1 found that people …

My original Piano Transplants (1969-72) were about relishing the shock of displacement: pianos planted in an English garden, sinking in a Texas cattle pond, pianos beached and aflame; observing their slow transformation through natural processing the five year decay. My relationship with the piano did not end with the Piano Transplants, though. I will also discus more recent works stemming from my fascination with the rich array of sounds which can be drawn from every part of the instrument once the keyboard is dethroned.

The following is a retrospective of the work of Western Australian born composer Lindsay Vickery. The paper examines the composer's diverse output in composed and improvised instrumental and electronic music and multimedia works. A nine digit string of numbers that the composer calls a "cypher", ties together a significant portion of Vickery's output for almost two decades of compositional activity, but the sense in which these works are about something else is palpable in each and every one. The popularity of mobile phone artworks is rapidly increasing, with handsets readily available, artists excited about sponsorship opportunities, and the general push in electronic arts. The broad aim of the paper that follows is to test the claim of critics such as Miriam Fraser and Steve Connor that the modernist deconstruction of the music/noise dichotomy has entered a distinctively postmodern phase. The article below therefore traces the history and poetics of this dichotomy from the modernist avant-garde to contemporary Australian postmodernist Sound Art, moving from a discussion of the ideas of Russolo, Cage, Boulez and Schaeffer, to a close reading of Ros Bandt's "Stack" (2000- 01). These themes as expressed in contemporary Australian composition are then explored in Part Two.

In this paper I would like to introduce my recent composition: "I.B.R. Variation 1" (a composition for computer, electrified guitar, mixing board and human body), which is derived from three different projects, - Illusions, Body Mix, Resistance -, fusing three different and already unusual interfaces for musical expression into a powerful new musical instrument. Most people intuitively understand what it means to “hear a tune in your head.” Converging evidence now indicates that auditory cortical areas can be recruited even in the absence of sound and that this corresponds to the phenomenological experience of imagining music. We discuss these findings as well as some methodological challenges. We also consider the role of core versus belt areas in musical imagery, the relation between auditory and motor systems during imagery of music performance, and practical implications of this research.

Pauline Viardot (1821- 1910) was a famous mezzo-soprano with a career spanning twenty-four years (1839-1863). Her Music Salon is credited for launching the careers of Camille Saint-Säens, Jules Massenet, Gabriel Fauré, and Charles Gounod. After her retirement she turned her attention towards teaching and composition. She has written over 100 Vocal compositions, 15 Instrumental compositions and 5 Salon Operas. However, the lack of biographical studies, music publication, and theoretical works which discuss stylistic and interpretative aspects of choral performance creates problems for conductors. The primary goal of this study is to consider Amaral Vieira’s Stabat Mater, op. 240 specifically from a conductor’s point of view, focusing on biographical, analytical, stylistic, and interpretative issues.
