LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This document contains a score of the opera transcription for Harmonie that has been compiled from a manuscript collection currently in the holdings of the Helikon Castle Museum Library in Keszthely, Hungary (H KE 0/117) and arranged by Georg Druschetzky, Bohemian-born oboist and regimental drummer, who spent the major portion of his career working in the small geographical area of Bratislava, Vienna and Budapest. The most significant portion of this collection is extracted from Müller's opera Kaspar der Fagottist. This constitutes the last 15 arias found in Druschetzky's arranged collection of 42 Arias mentioned previously. Included is a presentation of …

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston Jan 2003

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston

Research outputs pre 2011

The aim of this research was to automate the composition of convincingly “real” music in specific musical genres. By “real” music we mean music which is not obviously “machine generated”, is recognizable as being of the selected genre, is perceived as aesthetically pleasing, and is usable in a commercial context. To achieve this goal, various computational techniques were used, including genetic algorithms and finite state automata. The process involves an original, top down approach and a bottom up approach based on previous studies. Student musicians have objectively assessed the resulting compositions.

Compositional And Programming Issues Within Lyra, A Fully Interactive Performance Environment For Violin And Kyma System, Brian Belet Jan 2003

Compositional And Programming Issues Within Lyra, A Fully Interactive Performance Environment For Violin And Kyma System, Brian Belet

Faculty Publications

Meaningful real-time interaction between human performers and computer processing is an important aesthetic issue for many composers. With the advent of computer systems that are actually fast enough to permit real-time algorithmic sound realizations based on the analysis of live performance data the issue now facing composers is how to utilize these tools in a meaningful and artistic way. Lyra, composed in 2002 for violin and Kyma, is an environment in which the acoustically generated sounds and the computer generated and processed sounds are mutually dependent upon each other for a unified ensemble performance. All of the computer music layers …

Developing A Four-Mallet Marimba Technique Featuring The Alternation Of Mallets In Each Hand For Linear Passages And The Application Of This Technique To Transcriptions Of Selected Keyboard Works By J.S. Bach, Thomas Allen Zirkle Jan 2003

Developing A Four-Mallet Marimba Technique Featuring The Alternation Of Mallets In Each Hand For Linear Passages And The Application Of This Technique To Transcriptions Of Selected Keyboard Works By J.S. Bach, Thomas Allen Zirkle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this study is to develop a four-mallet marimba technique that utilizes alternation within each hand on linear passages, then apply this technique to selected keyboard works of J. S. Bach. This paper provides a method of training the hands for this type of alternation and will hypothesize a conception of hand positions as a method of facing the visual/spatial logistics issues of marimba performance. A performance annotation chapter will then apply the alternation sticking, and its resultant positional concepts, to three new transcriptions of J. S. Bach's inventions and a prelude and fugue from his Well-Tempered Clavier …

Block Scheduling And Music Education: Building Time For Effective Education, Laura J. Horst

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Block scheduling is investigated in this study as a strategy of scheduling, specifically in the secondary vocal music program. There is a need to document the process of effective teaching in vocal music for extended teaching periods. Memorization Of Piano Music: Instrumental Sub-Context Alteration Within The Same Room Among Community College Students, William Wayne Backlin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine if one change within a context would affect the memorization of a piano composition. Thirty-two subjects were randomly selected from a Midwestern community college piano department (N = 67). Subjects were 18-, 19-, 20- and 21-year-old adult piano students who were asked to memorize a 16 measure original piano composition written by the investigator. The initial memorization occurred in one piano studio upon a Steinway and Sons grand piano (Sub-context A) or upon a Kawai studio piano (Sub-context B). After the retention interval, subjects were asked to perform the memorized piano selection. …
