Previous research on memory for music has typically measured participants' reaction times (RTs) and accuracy in tests of recall and recognition of songs presented to them. The current study was interested in what occurs during the time that elapses between stimulus onset and the generation of a response. It has been suggested that people sing or hum to themselves as they search for an answer (Rubin, 1977), but a question that has been overlooked to date is in what direction this occurs. We investigated the spontaneous detection of "wrong notes" in a melody that modulated continuously through all 24 major and minor keys. Three variations of the melody were composed, each of which had distributed within it 96 test tones of the same pitch, for example, A2. Thus, the test tones would blend into some keys and pop out in others. Participants were not asked to detect or judge specific test tones; rather, they were asked to make a response whenever they heard a note that they thought sounded wrong or out of place. This thesis consists of an investigation into the main influences on flute performance and pedagogy in Dublin during the period 1950 to 2000. It explores the pedagogical lineage between the influential performers and teachers of the period, and Paul Taffanel, the founder of the modern French school of flute playing. Finally, it examines influences on the methodologies of influential Dublin teachers. Chapter 1 outlines the changing musical landscape for flute performers/teachers in Dublin 1950-2000. Matthaeus Pipelare was a composer from the southern Netherlands who flourished in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Except for the little more than two years he spent as choirmaster for the Confraternity associated with the Cathedral of St. John in 's Hertogenbosch, located in Northern Brabant, almost nothing is known of his professional or personal life. Yet writers of the period hailed his skill and placed him in the same company as such well-known composers as Josquin, la Rue, Brumel, and Isaac. The clarinetist of today is challenged by advancements in contemporary music and technology. In addition to the difficulties with contemporary clarinet techniques and with the onset of electronic music, multimedia compositions from the last forty years have presented an additional obstacle: the visual element. In this project the cornet parts in the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan are examined. First the cornet parts of Gilbert and Sullivan are compared to another composer of operetta, Jacques Offenbach, as well as a composer of opera, Giacomo Puccini. Next, the most important passages for cornet from the works of Gilbert and Sullivan are selected. They are grouped into three main categories: fanfare passages, section passages, and soloistic passages.
