The Working Hour: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Lyrics Of Tears For Fears, Jennifer Anne Gross-Mejía

Theses Digitization Project

Childhood friends Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal founded the band Tears for Fears, and were the two primary members from 1982-1990. Their songs describe the struggle of coping with childhood abuse. This thesis analyzes the rhetorical aspects of their lyrics, emphasizing how the words of their songs express the fundamental human response to abuse, and the painful process of recovery. It explores how the songwriters use the psychological theories of Arthur Janov and Carl Jung to scaffold their experience of working through emotional trauma; and how they combine those theories with astrological symbolism to explore the idea of destiny. Sonification allows existing mathematical data to be used as the model for audio output, notably that the audio produced is related to or representative of that data in some way. Existing work in the field has been largely focused on the aesthetic tailoring of the output audio for compositional benefit rather than as a framework for audio representation and analysis. It is the goal of this research to apply existing techniques for pitch substitution to an analytical method that seeks to define and represent patterns within existing data sets (primarily DNA and RNA sequences). The piece treats texts by Poe, cummings and Mallarmé as “musical fragments” — specifically, Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart serves, in a more modest setting, a similar function as that of Mahler in Berio’s Sinfonia: some sort of ongoing, complete background quotation of an entire work, onto which various other elements are grafted. (*) Clear quotations appear once more: Nono and Stockhausen being the most prominent, so to speak. Contemporary band scholars believe that the American community band experienced a revival at the end of the twentieth century. Examining the community band’s unique history from its earliest forms during the Revolutionary period through the Golden Age of Bands identifies the traditions that supported this revival. The twentieth century, however, is ripe with developments largely independent from previous eras, including the vast expansion of the music education system in the United States and the education of amateur musicians, the Great Depression, and the gradual acceptance of the band as an artistic medium. During the pivotal November 2002 football game of Arkansas vs. Georgia in the SEC conference championship, the Georgia marching band struck up their defensive rallying song. Instead of a typical "defense" song, the band played an excerpt of the Gregorian Sequence Dies Irae ("Day of Wrath'') from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Drastically dissociated from its original medieval milieu, this musical Sequence still manages to elicit the same effect of fear and foreboding nearly a thousand years later.
