This independent study serves as an introduction of the Serbian folk music from the time of former Yugoslavia to classical musicians unfamiliar with its style. It provides research about its characteristics, heritage, and development, as well as the introduction to a few of many folk songs popular to this day. Furthermore, it offers arrangements and an explanation of the arranging process from the perspective of a classical music performer, which can serve as an inspiration and guide to other musicians interested in arranging music, as well as different styles of music.

Between 1961-1964, an estimated number of 113’000 Nubians, who were living south of the site of the Aswan High Dam, the area now beneath Lake Nasser, and Wadi Halfa, north of Sudan, were displaced to an area near Kom Ombo, 20 kilometres away from the Nile and 50 kilometres north of Aswan. This major project of resettlement occurred for the construction of the Aswan High Dam, Nasser’s signature mega-project. The 1961-1964 displacement was the culmination of earlier waves of relocation that Nubians witnessed during their recent history. Providing a process for reducing accompaniments to commonly assigned undergraduate vocal repertoire could aid instructors with limited piano skills in the applied studio setting. Through the use of questionnaires and an online survey, it was determined that there is a population of undergraduate instructors of voice that do not have an accompanist present to play during student lessons. Without an accompanist, many teachers are unable to play the pieces as written, which warrants the creation of reduced scores as useful alternatives to pre-recorded tracks.

This study explores Anna Magdalena Bach’s manuscript of Cello Suite No. 3, BWV 1009 and John W. Duarte’s arrangement of this work. The findings of this study show that this arrangement is idiomatic for guitar, incorporates J. S. Bach’s approach to arrangement, and is part of a long musical tradition.

In the third variation of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in C Minor, Op. 111, there is an abrupt shift in rhythms that almost resembles an excerpt of early jazz. This passage is so seemingly out of place that it appears to be an ironic commentary on the music that came before. This variation thereby raises an interesting question: how can irony play a role in music?

This thesis examines how French Enlightenment ideologies influence representations of non-European figures in eighteenth-century opera and opera-ballet. The venue of the fair theatre created a space for egalitarian principles to covertly criticize autocratic control as is exemplified in the utopian ideals of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Les Indes galantes.

From the Bible’s first mention of the trumpet in the book of Leviticus, to the prescribed uses of the instrument in the Psalms, to the trumpet blasts described in Revelation, the influence of brass instruments in the Christian faith has been present since ancient times. In the 20th century, Tim Zimmerman and his group the King’s Brass would come to the forefront of this tradition, reviving the use of brass in the church as a tool for worship. The King’s Brass has remained a leader in sacred brass music for the last forty years.

Slåtter, Norwegian Peasant Dances, Op. 72 is a composition for solo piano by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). This set is one of his greatest contributions to piano literature, and shows his attempt to bring the traditional folk music to the rest of the world. The object of this study is to aid musicians toward a better understanding of Slåtter through a stylistic analysis of the work. The study includes historical information about the composer and his connection with nationalism in Northern Europe, and conveys how Slåtter can be considered a culminating work representing traditional Norwegian style characteristics.

This research study identifies techniques of creating and releasing musical tension in audio-visual performance media, specifically within the marching arts. A successful composition in this medium is defined, in part, by the coordination of effects between pitched musical elements, non-pitched (percussive) musical elements, and movement (choreographed) elements.
